Game Chat – Collingwood v Melbourne

Written by Thommo on June 10 2019

Where and when: MCG, Monday June 10, 3.20pm AEST

What it means for Collingwood: A win would complete a successful first half of the season before the third-placed Pies enjoy a well-earned rest, but a second successive upset loss at the MCG would raise some doubts.

What it means for Melbourne: Simon Goodwin’s team needs to recapture some semblance of the uncompromising brand they created last year, and only that will do against a rebounding Collingwood. Victory could kickstart the 16th-placed Demons on a long road to recovery.

The stat: The Demons have been hot favourites in their past two clashes against the Pies but have failed miserably on both occasions – by 16 points in the last round of 2017, thus missing the finals, and by 42 points in last year’s Queen’s Birthday clash.

The match-up: Brodie Grundy v Max Gawn

In the eyes of many, Magpie big man Grundy (ranked No.3 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) has taken over from Demon counterpart Gawn (No.1) as the AFL’s premier ruckman, so here’s the perfect opportunity to settle it – at least for now.

It’s a big week for: Sam Weideman

It’ll also be a long week for the young key forward after he fluffed a chance to be the hero in his AFL return against Adelaide in Darwin, missing an otherwise regulation set shot in the dying seconds. He’ll be keen to atone in his first Queen’s Birthday game against the club his father and grandfather represented.

Thommo’s Tip: Pies by 18 points

    1. Phew! Satan rises.

Good luck today btw, TR. Cheering for you to post a big score and have a crack at the weekly prize.

        1. Lol. Been pioneering “Satan Oliver” for a while, starting to catch on.

Either way, I don’t mind, just as long as his devilish disposal efficiency and the curse he put on me to start him over Neale is acknowledged.

          1. Sorry GD – I know you’ve been pushing it and I generally like what you post but it’s a crap tag, in my humble opinion.

  2. Predictions: Demons to push the pies, but they won’t lose 2 in a row at the G

Satan Oliver to rack up 45 disposals with 29 handballs.

A significant injury to a star will eventuate.

Treloar to have a quiet day tagged by Harmes.

Gawn and Grundy to both just hit the ton, recording 107 and 102 respectively.

Marty Hore to score 60 with Lever, May back etc.

Top score: Satan Clayton 154, racking up 45 at an ugly 54% disposal efficiently, however 13 tackles gets him to 150.

    1. You should place a multi. All looks good from here 😉

Moore and Hore. One of you will be gone after today, so which of you is gonna stand up and be counted? Pls try and make it a hard and regrettable decision. Thanks 🙂

        1. Afternoon, PJ. And yeah, think you’re bang on. Big showing from Moore today, getting him back in AA calculations.

      1. if you have Brodie Smith AS – I’d be tempted to keep Hore over him, the way he is going oif late and with Milera back and laird, no room for them all methinks??

By the way, how good is the Big Freeze going with the sliders!!??

        1. Hear what you’re saying mate, but will likely hold Brodie as he’s doesn’t mess my bye structure with Lachie gone now. Would rather save the trade and eventually he and Hore can be D6/7. If Gardner gets dropped I should be able to loop them given WBD’s late fixtures in the back half.
That’s the thinking anyway. Am sure I’ll have to trade him for cash when injuries hit, but not right now.

  3. Very gusty here @ the G today
Might benefit treloar & Brayshaws ground game
Ground is soft with all the rain too
Who goes better in windy the conditions for my C
    Gawn
    Or
    Grundy

  4. Thinking about taking a punt on Clayton Oliver as C to try and salvage the massive overall slide I’m going to have this round, thoughts?

    1. What? No.

      a) if you’ve held Duursma through his bye use him as cover for the next two byes

      b) he’s been scoring well over the last two weeks and will make more money

      c) De Goey too dependent on goals, look elsewhere

  5. Great day for footy, great day for humanity. Hope you’re all wearing those blue beanies today.

Gut feel is that Hore and Oliver struggle SC-wise today, and Grundy and Gawn cancel each other out. Might be a tough day for Supercoach! Pies by about five goals

  7. I hope Grundy stays low as plenty have C on him. People should’ve gone for Gawn as he’s clearly a better player and isn’t managing an ankle injury.

    Mobility: Gawn

    Skills: Grundy

    Ruckwork: Gawn

    Pressure: Grundy

    Forward Craft: Even

    Intercept Marking: Gawn

    Contested work: Gawn

It’s close but I think Gawn is still the better player.

  8. Satan’s problem is he keeps getting contested possesions that lead to poor de. Eight out of nine so far.

    2

    0
  9. Without clangers Satan Oliver would’ve been on 40 at QT. 9 touches all contested at 70% is excellent.

    3

  10. Draft, have crisp, Treloar, Grundy and 70 points, vs Gawn captain. Thought it was over… not only leading by 30+ point at qtr time…

  11. Melbourne overuse the ball so much particularly with handballs. The more they touch it the more likely there is going to be a mistake.

    5

    0
  12. Hore and Treloar turning the ball over and scoring points, yet Moore loses points for not being able to pick up a ground ball

    4

    0
      1. He had a good quarter, but it started with him turning over 2 handballs, 1 which directly cost them a goal. Yet he still gained points on each occasion

        2

        1. I will preface this by saying I don’t have him and one opponent does , but he went from 40 to 61 with 3 hb 1 tackle and no kicks!56 to 61 with one handball .

          1

          0
  13. Gawn 17 disposals to Grundy’s 9. More HO to advantage too. Giving him an absolute footy lesson as predicted.

  15. Having serious regrets now at getting scared off the results of the last three years between these two and not selecting Gawn and C!!

      1. Neale into Jelly … Neale was looking great till HT then the tag shut him down completely … bit poor on his behalf and the GWS ?? Must have thought they were still playing the Suns!!

        0
        1. Ah. Bad luck. I was certain Neale was gonna hit his B.E at half time.

Don’t feel bad though, anyone who missed Cripps (myself included) will be hating themselves rn.

          2

          0
          1. yeah Cripps score was a bit WTF?? On about 52 midway through the third quarter and ends up on 194??? That’s some serious scoring …

    1. Having deeper regrets on not having Gawn in my team after being scared off by
Grundy 1st game and impact Preus will have.
Need to get him in ASAP however damage done.

  16. Mr Grundy…the game is won. Don’t put any more pressure on your ankle. Take a rest and I can get you cheaper r14.

    2

    4
      1. I went Gawn/goldy and picked up rob on bench with the idea of two rucks each week during byes. Has cost me a bit so far but going to pay off now as long as rob not dropped for sauce..cant see that happening after rob 102 this week.

  17. Hmmmm Hore is fast firming as my D6 over B Smith. Do we believe he will have the JS for the year?

Good poll question for the week??

    1. Hore jS? He’s a chance at top 5 in best and fairest….

      Oliver

      Harmes

      Hore

    2. Good poll on both points. Reckon LLoyd, Hurn Laird, Stewart, Sicily, Daniel, Whit, and one or two others might still have him covered. Great d7 if you can wrangle it.

      5

      1
      1. Daniel’s a FWD and Laird won’t make it, even from here. Well he might, but I won’t be buying him 😉

  18. If Grundy can get to 80, Gawn to 130, Satan Oliver to 115 and Hore to 95, I’ll finish up on 1916. Will be wrapped with that.

    1. need 100 from Grundy please … Gawn can stop playing now … they should put him in cotton wool … big second half of the season … the game is done … and all that jazz!! *wink*

  20. 10 goals 25 points for the Dees over the last six quarters. At least the players will be ‘bitterly disappointed’.

    4

        1. Oh come on, Chips. He fed them the ball all night against the Crows and they butchered it, not his job to kick goals. He did his part, guy’s a beast.

          *not a Demons supporter btw

          4

          0
        2. would argue that Weideman’s kick was even easier chance, even though it was after siren … he should have nailed that one more so than Gawn!!

          1

          0
  21. Dees had more than 80% possession in the forward pocket for thus far in the quarter … and failed to take advantage of it. They need someone who can kick straight and also some better ability to crumb the ball from around the contest and convert – first chance the Pies had to get it out – straight down field and the score …

    2. Apparently I can’t count. 2145. Thought I was trailing TrooRoo by 78 exact same players plus Moore who scored 78.

      1. TrooRoo last night you said u needed 450 to get 2150. Yours players got a combined score of 445 which would put you at 2145. How’d you get 2230 ? Captain someone today ? I could be wrong. All these numbers are doing my head in. Great score whatever you got.
