Game Chat – Collingwood v Port

Written by Motts on May 3 2019

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Friday May 3, 7.50pm AEST

Last time they met: MCG, round 22, 2018: Collingwood 17.13 (115) defeated Port Adelaide 10.4 (64)

The Magpies cemented their first finals berth in four years while the Power slipped outside the eight and ultimately missed the finals. After leading by just four points midway through the third term, the Pies piled on 8.5 to 1.0 to break a four-game losing streak against Port.

What it means for Collingwood: In the first of just three appearances at Marvel Stadium this season, the Pies will fancy their chances of posting their fourth successive win in a period in which they could build serious momentum.

What it means for Port Adelaide: On a fast track under the roof, Ken Hinkley’s boys have a golden opportunity to strengthen their credentials against one of the flag favourites.

How Collingwood wins: Jamie Elliott’s return will allow the Pies to assemble their full complement of forwards for the first time and possibly enable superstar Jordan De Goey to spend more time in the midfield, where his explosiveness could be critical.

How Port Adelaide wins: The Power have unleashed some exciting speedsters – among them the supremely talented Connor Rozee and fellow NAB AFL Rising Star nominee Xavier Duursma – who have the ability to unsettle the Magpies’ team defence.

The stat: The Power have never beaten Collingwood at Marvel Stadium, losing their previous four games at the venue to the Pies by an average of 43 points. The teams haven’t met there since 2012.

The match-up: Brodie Grundy v Scott Lycett and Paddy Ryder

It all starts at the source, and Power pair Lycett (ranked No.94 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) and Ryder (No.22) will look to nullify the AFL’s premier ruckman Grundy (No.4), just as Lycett and Nathan Vardy did in West Coast’s Grand Final triumph seven months ago.

It’s a big week for: Tom Rockliff

The prolific onballer amassed 43 touches in Brisbane’s win over the Pies at the MCG in round 21, 2014, but in his two games against them since then, both at the MCG, he has managed just 18 (after being injured in the third quarter in his first game as Lions’ captain in round one, 2015) and 17 in Port’s round 22 loss last year.

Big call: Port comes agonisingly close to toppling both 2018 Grand Finalists

Mottsy’s Tip: Magpies by 15 points

  2. Hi guys this may not be popular but I am trading drew prematurely for Dunkley as I think he has regained his midfield role and will average 105 from here on in. Drew May struggle against the pies and only score 50 while Dunkley should Ton up tagging dusty.

T/U Go With it, solid upgrade

T/D Constable and Drew still have cash to make

      1. He has been playing mid last 2 weeks for and tagging again. It was announced Bont would play forward more swapping roles with dunk.

    1. As a Dunkley owner, I hope you completely nail this trade and we can both ride the 110+ wave again

  3. Collins for TK definitely happening.
Still tossing up with the other trade…

    T/u libba out for crouch
T/d burgess or another rookie out for bolton or hayes

  4. is boaky too expensive now?

    TD: grab him still

  5. Getting in Hayes regardless and Collins also out but my second trade is a tough choice:
    Butters- C. Daniel
    Constable- Sicily

    1. Boak I hope but I suspect it maybe Rockliff.

Greenwood is an underrated tagger and did some good jobs for North. Should play more regularly.

Rocky staring on the bench might mix things up a bit

  6. So tempted to V/C Rocky or Grundy.

I saved it this week for Gawn. I hope it’s the right call.

Pies just, in a tight one ( less than a goal ) for me.

    Sidebum BOG.

Looking very one sided at the moment..

  7. Looking good so far for me.

Grundy and Moore poppin’ off and Duursma and Drew look like they’ll score decently even though Port are getting pumped.

Will also be vindicated if Butters and Boak stay low. My prediction that Butters would go low justified trading him and I went Fyfe over Boak to save some coin.

    1. Also so highly rated by the Blues that we traded our way back into last year’s draft on the night to secure him (swapping future first-round picks with Adelaide for #19).

  10. Great game by Pendles. Ablett is in contention too. Would they become SC relevant again this year as POD?
    TU yes
    TD They have passed it

    1. I hear that when Sier is fit, Pendles will likely play behind the ball. He’s been doing it in shifts for 1 1/2 weeks in preparation. He’s pretty good at it 🙂
We call Pendles Mr. Anderson (film reference) in our house.

If Ablett had FWD status … he doesn’t. I also read that Scott said he’d be managed this year and without being disrespectful, they have some kind fixtures after this week.

      Draft? Yes. Classic? NO.

        1. Looking forward. Simple as that I think.

Dunno what everyone else thinks, but feel like Bucks has become his own self over the last 18 months. He believes in his plans 110% and the club have bought in as a consequence. The players totally.

          A shame 😉

    1. They’re so good at it. All 6 have taken turns this year and the oppo don’t know how to deal with it, until it’s all change again?!

Bevo take note. Do it every five minutes, not every two weeks!

    1. If his body holds up, he has the potential to reach $450k over the next few weeks. Not a Top6 DEF though……

  12. Haven’t watched much of the game … what the eff is going on with Rockliff – from what I have seen, there isn’t anyone really tagging him at all … he just looks like he’s playing off the ball and doesn’t look too interested???

Have they shifted him off the ball again and wide to a wing??

    2

    0
    1. playing up forward a lot too?? His TOG is down, DE down and very few CP’s … so he’s nowhere near the ball … what the F is the coach doing??

      1. probably a bit of a cotton wool job going on now
trying to get him through the season in 1 peice , unleash him in finals

  13. WOW! That clearance from Boak was explosive, he has found some dynamic form. Very impressed.

  14. I really should have loopholed Lycett. He’s struggled against dominant tap ruckmen this year.

    3

    1. I want to rage trade him already.

However he is up against ROB next week so hopefully he can teach the rookie a lesson.

I think I may have to loophole Rocky next week.

Boak (in his milestone game) should go and look Rockliff & Lycett eye to eye and just say ‘You didn’t come to play tonight’ and walk of in disgust

  15. AFL: Hey Port, you need a clash jumper for Collingwood.
Port: How about Black & White?
AFL: Aren’t Collingwood Black & White?
Port: What about a teal jumper?
    AFL: …
Port: What about Black & White plus grey?
    AFL: Perfect!

    1. Saw that too, could be a sneaky / cheap upgrade (with bonus ruck cover if you have a swing R3). Could be worth a punt.

  16. Am I imagining that Rockliff is trying to mark and grab the ball with one arm? Not really lifting his left arm above his head in the final quarter…

    4

    1. something not right with him … and or the decisions by coach .. he was definitely % not playing on ball … TOG 75% DE59% CP’s only 7 and 4 of those late … and only 22 possies …. he looked buggered running out there … wonder if he is crook??

Wasted by not playing him on ball though … CP beast when allowed to play there …

    1. He really should. Still, owners will be pleased as he has a fair bit more cash to make.
Will be priced at $370k with a BE of 43.5 (a lot more accurate this week! 🙂 )
Moore cash to come and if he keeps playing like that could even be a keeper. At the very least until his bye > straight swap to a Sicily or Ryan / Boak or Dunkley (any other DEF/FWD Rd12 premo).
      Happy days.
