Game Chat – Collingwood v St Kilda

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on March 8 2020

Where and when: Morwell Recreation Reserve, Sunday 8 March, 3.50pm AEDT

Watchlist:

Darcy CAMERON (COLL) FWD/RUC @ $123,900

How will he go with Grundy back in? How will they split the ruck duties? Will have even get a run today? Let’s find out.

John NOBLE (COLL) DEF @ $215,400

Despite having the name of an 18th century barrister, he looked very adept last week in defence. Could have better job security than some of the top shelf defensive rookies many of us have been looking at. Consider.

Dylan ROBERTON (STK) DEF @ $260,400

Great to see him back. Story could get even better if he pops off in defence and comes as a reprieve to the rabble of rookies we’re faced with.

Jade GRESHAM (STK) FWD/MID @ $456,500

Limited to 59% TOG in Marsh One, but looked tremendous in that first half. Team high center bounce attendances for that first half and looked very solid in the midfield. Hopefully we get a fuller picture today.

Dan Hannebery (STK) MID @ $417,000

Teased us in the last three rounds of 2019 with scores of 122, 94 and 103 on return. Not a lot of intel on his pre-season work, but being named on the ball today should tell us all we need to know.

Notable Absentees: Trent BIANCO (COLL), Adam TRELOAR (COLL), Jake CARLISLE (STK).

  1. Hanners could be a very good M5 for 8-10 rounds if he stays fit – should score 100+ and make us some $$$

At his price, it also allows mid pricers in FWD and DEF given the lack of first year rookies available

    1. Comes at the expense of Houston @ D3, but a “guns & rookies” structure is difficult to do without rookies lol.

  2. Grundy showing the form highlighted by a contributor in the Team reveals last week. I gave it a thumbs down but maybe I should go back and cancel that out. He’s getting easily beaten around the ground and matched in the ruck. Not worth 700k on that form and if the other comments that I read were were true he’s not even worth 500k. Lets see what happens in next 3 qrtrs

    1. Don’t be fooled by the marsh series.
Read the same comment last season and people who started without top 2 ruckman paid the price during the session.

      1. Can’t live in the past Tonestar and from what I’ve seen in the present he’s not worth 700k. You can base your team on last year if that makes you feel safe but the bloke has been soundly beaten in every game that he’s played this year and that was against some very ordinary rucks. He’s been very lucky so far today with umps paying ‘benefit of the doubt’ and not calling back centre bounces that have gone way left and almost straight to him. He’s no Max Gawn and will easily drop 150k before the byes. Gawn and Jacobs is the better ruck combo to start when there’s such a shortage of good rookies

        1. “beaten in very game that he’s played this year”.

He’s played 2.5 games. Hardly a sound sample size for you to write him off.

      2. Last years Grundy concerns were due to him having a foot injury and not playing pre-season games at all. Bit of a difference this year when he’s getting beaten by rucks like Pittonet

        1. Good point there too Doctor.
Second question, how we looking with the coronavirus? We will survive till end of footy session at best?

          1. Stock up on dunny role tone and then camp out the front of coles selling it for $10 a roll. You’ll need a truck to take home the cash

      3. It’s more a question of WHICH of the top 2.

I can afford one of. Grundy has underwhelmed me.

Also seriously, why is Cameron not playing? He was awesome last week.

Guess it’s to do with contracts.

  3. Will do the HT scores.

Am enjoying watching 2nd-yr Callum WILIKE give Jordan “who thinks he’s god” DE GOEY a bath 😉

    1. Wilkie, King, Marshall , Clark all look promising AS, i just don’t like our midfield or Membery unfortunately, love for them to prove me wrong though.

      1. Agreed. Marshall and Wilkie look very fit and up for it. How’s King’s leap and think I prefer Clark behind the ball. Back six will be hard to pick this year but we won’t be able to drop Wilike on this form which means Carlisle may struggle … until Geary goes down!! Nice problem to have!

        MIDs
Steele looks good defensively but a little off which surprises me, Dunstan doing his usual thing but we’ve been second or third to everything at the stoppages. Disappointing. Don’t forget no ROSS or GRESHAM today tho’.

Don’t mind Membrey personally .. he’s the only FWD we have who can kick straight! But when he’s dragged up the ground he struggles! He’ll be right.

        Enjoying it.

    1. LONG is looking more and more like the best pick of those cheap FWDs. Playing loose off HB, which he has all pre-season and is looking like his spot to lose.
He’s priced as a FWD pocket from last year. Big ROLE CHANGE (so ignore previous numbers) and is lapping it up!

      4

      1. Only concern is the constant re-jigging on the Saints’ backline. Carlisle’s out today, Roberton’s back in, Clark’s having a quiet one. Who knows what’ll happen in the opening rounds.

Pretty sure he [Long] played at HB in Marsh One and put up a 60~.

        1. fair point GD and it’s risky, but he could make a lot of money quickly.

You’re right, he did only score 64 from 80% TOG in MS1, but he’s also being pushed up the ground a bit which is when he tends to go missing (witness last qtr) but he’ll score enough to be onfield and make you a minimum $100k I reckon. Best case, he could make $150-200k and looks like he’ll be given a proper run at it.

Yes it’s a fair investment and could go sideways but I like what I saw in the first qtr of both games and that’s more likely to be the set-up come Rd1.

      2. He looks really good. 70 odd aren’t numbers to excite but they are good reliable rookie numbers for a defender and would see a 150k gain over time

    1. Howe just came in for Houston.

Worth noting the Taylor Adams out.

Look at Howe’s end of season output.

  10. The problem with STK this year is gonna be picking keepers with their Rd11 BYE and needing 22 on field that week. Same goes for PTA. Might still consider Dan HOUSTON as a keeper, but think ROBERTON and LONG are genuinely good upgrade picks.

I thought NOBLE was that good he has to be best 22 and thought Tyler BROWN just got better and better, but with Pendles, Adams and De Goey being rested in that last QTR, we can’t expect too much.

    Thoughts?!

      1. But real tempted to bring him in as a pod, though it’d be interesting to see how he retains that role when Webster comes back into the side

      2. Doesn’t matter mate. You’ll be rid of him come Rds 5-7. DPPs can be useful, but should NEVER sway your initial selections. Especially if they’re not any chance of being keepers. Focus on the points (if they’re gonna be onfield) and the money obviously. You HAVE to go for the best, regardless of position (DPP or not).

    1. Good points All Saints
Roberton has been in and out of my team like Docherty . Seem underpriced but been out of footy along time and other players have developed in meantime .
Noble looks good and will lock in for now however quanor and Bianco waiting in wings if he has a down game .
Tyler Brown was compared to Fyfe by Bucks last year but like GWS many options in midfield . Trealor back rnd 2 , wills and Sier all pressing

      3

      0
      1. Biggest threat with Roberton is if Long plays that role it’s gonna cripple Roberton’s scoring.

He’ll still go up, but not back to elite levels.

        0

        0
    2. Tyler Brown looks just a natural footballer, might not be starter but a rookie downgrade during the season, he’s bigger than his brother & Daicos so I think has more flexibility.

      1

  11. Grundy is Gone i’m not starting a player for 700k who can’t even go 90+ in pre-season and cameron will return yet and help round the ground in R1. Grundy has also got his payday nothing too play for in 2020 watch him fall away.

ROB & Jacobs it is. catch me if you can i’ll be miles ahead of the competition 6-8 rounds in 🙂

    4

    12
      1. With you here AS, Grundy is a lock for me, especially seeing his past 3 matches against WB (English) have been 160, 174, and 152…

        3

        0
        1. might see a bit more from ENGLISH this year, but yeah. Over 22 games, I can’t see anyone beating him at R1. For that reason, I don’t care how much he costs.

          2

          0
          1. AS – see my comments yesterday on English … not too bad, but when it counted in last quarter, Hoff was all over him … I think next year, with a full season under him, better skills, bigger tank and more size, he will start to be very enticing …

            2

            0
      2. not sure i have it in me too go ROB & Jacobs tbh AS haha
Gawn & jacobs though yes.. grundy in the origin was meh & i didnt watch the game today but just what i’ve read he was average! and i do believe post huge pay day contracts players drop off or peak when playing for a huge payday. just look at dusty Grundy may be the same. I wont be starting him

        2

        1
      3. Grundy or Gawn? Grundy worried me with the contract talks and the talk about going “home”.

He stayed for the money, no question.

Can he find the desire to play for the prison stripes when his heart is elsewhere?

I don’t know. We’ll find out. But I’m thinking more and more I will find out without paying 700k for him.

I also think Cox is clearly not better for the Collingwood best 22 than Cameron, and that places a significant threat to Grundy.

        1. HH
Grundy his own man and if he decided to leave to Adelaide confident he would have received same remuneration .
No doubt There was carrot of returning to Adelaide however has some great relationships at Collingwood

          0

          0
    1. seriously … he made 34 HO’s against the opposition 38 for two rucks … and gave away 3 free kicks.

He didn’t have his best midfield around him and clearly his taps were picked off …

Yeah, don’t pick him … lets see where you finish!

  12. What are people’s thoughts on Rowan Marshall.

1- Will Ryder have a big impact on his scoring?

2- Does the St Kilda R11 bye turn you off?

    4

    1
    1. Rd11 turns me off TBH. I’ve had him at R2 since Gawn’s knee, but it simply creates too big a hole in Rd11 now.
If we had a decent R3 option it may be worth the risk, but CAMERON playing VFL and Xerri on the extended bench make it hard.
I WILL reconsider if Xerri has another good game tomorrow and is named Rd1 tho’.
If I was Rhyce SHAW, that’s what I’d be looking at for the long-term. Wouldn’t you?! It means he could manage Goldy to have another huge year and get some games into a genuine future prospect from what we say in MS1.

      5

      1. *saw

PS Marshall will have a big year this year. Ryder the chop-out and coaching Rowan at his RUC craft. Was a little unlucky today, but he’s definitely up and about!

        3

        0
    2. Unlikely to score as much as last year sharing the ruck duties.

Add Round 11 bye and it’s a huge no.

Best two rucks will still be GG. Neither will match last year’s output, but any plan that hasn’t got both in your end of season best 22 is a plan based on a flawed assumption.
