Game Chat – Dogs v Collingwood

Written by Motts on March 20 2020

Where and when: Marvel, Friday March 20, 7:50pm

What it means for Western Bulldogs: A chance to show the League the Bulldogs are not just ‘around the mark’ but truly one of the competition’s elite teams.

What it means for Collingwood: The Pies face the Bulldogs and then Richmond over the first two rounds. Going 2-0 in tough games certainly makes for a better sell than 0-2.

The stat: 178. That’s how many AFL Fantasy points Jack Macrae racked up the last time the Dogs faced the Magpies. Lock him in as your captain.

The match-up: Tim English v Brodie Grundy

Tim English (No.306 in AFL Player Ratings) starts as the rank outsider against Brodie Grundy (No.2), but the young Bulldog has made massive strides over the off-season. Expect this to be a brilliant clash.

In the spotlight: Josh Bruce

Could the key forward be the one to take the Bulldogs’ ceiling to the next level? Aaron Naughton is in but there are concerns around his fitness, so Bruce will need to crash packs and be at his best  to give the small forwards a chance.

Big call: Jordan De Goey lights up Friday night footy with five goals.

  1. Last minute choice for R3

Xerri or Cameron? Who will play first? Who works better for loopholes when we don’t know the fixture?

    T/U Cameron will play first
T/D Xerri will be better for loopholes

    1. Cameron will play earlier than Xerri (once Buckley realises how bad Cox is). Xerri will only get games if Ben Brown gets injured.
      I’ve gone with Cameron, personally.

        1. But didn’t have Cameron on the list last year.

Cox does his job, provides a contest, clunks a few marks. Kicks pretty well for a big unit.

But Cameron always was a bona fide player. Just didn’t seem to try at Sydney so didn’t get a go. Was smart enough to play well enough at Neafl level to keep his career kicking on.

Makes you wonder, so many players wouldn’t put the effort in for Sydney under Horse.

But I guess every club gets some of those.

    1. Stick William at R3 this week. Kruzer busted his foot. DeKoning will be In the mix for next week.

  2. T/u. Gould, starcevich, cameron/xerri

    T/d. Starcevich, mcinerney, comben

Option 1 leaves me with no playing def rookies but a r/f that may play.

Option 2 gets me a playing def rookie and mcinerney. Whats his js like?

  4. Captain choice

TU: Macrae (will he be tagged, will Bont / Dunkley steal his points…)
TD: Grundy (bit concerned of his below 100 in game 1 of season 2019 & 2018)

      1. Not me.

        Grundy / Naismith …Comben.

Pittonet or De Koning options to come in next week.

        I do have a stacked Forward line 🙂 🙂

Somehow I decided to VC Dunkley.

        Grumble Grumble Grumble…

  5. Why oh why did I not VC Grundy he will be on 75 at 1/4 absolutely dominating both ruck contests & around the ground.

Meanwhile my VC Dunkley is yet to be sited

  6. First mistake of the season… Well apart from some questionable team choices…
Grundy VC’d but left Gawn on field with Cameron on bench no Emg. Looks like I’ve stuffed the captains loophole Round 1. Setting the tone for my season

*sigh* is it too early to start planning for next year?

    1. Welcome to sc Emma. I’m in the same boat. Always stuff up the first rd. On the bright side I remembered to set my emergency players for the first time.

  7. Anyone having trouble with Fanfooty so far this week?
Took more than half the game of trying before the website would load and same thing again right now

  8. Don’t overthink the trades coaches. We all get 30. Someone drops a poo or someone lays a big one, trade them in or trade them
    Out.

    1. Yeah, not much he can do when it goes straight from Grundy to a Pies MID. He relies on those groundballs.

        1. Yeah very concerned, Dunkley averaged 8 a games after round 7 last year, he has 1 to half time, Cripps was similar last night.

  9. Imagine having started Dunkley. Talk about chasing points, hasn’t put up a good score for 6 months!

      1. I had v on grundy, and c on comden who will not play. So, I get grundy as my c. If Grundy spuds it, I can move c to almost anyone else in my team, as comden plays late Sunday.
This works for the first four rounds.

  10. Sounds ridiculous but is there any reason to panic about Dunkley?

    Tu; I’ve lost my marbles

    Td; panic stations

    1. Dogs got smashed around contests & his disposal efficiency was terrible. Back him in next week if there is a match next week, hopefully

    2. Hey Jack
      He will be right .
I didn’t have him all Pre season and traded him in at last minute for Macrae and also have Bont but Doggies outplayed tonight .
Super Coach messes with your head so slightly disapponted
Avid Collingwood Man and happy with Grundy’s performance but decided to take Dusty’s vc score .
Lack of Crowds though seem to be contributing to lack of intensity and Dunks needs that when he is at his best
Good luck for rest of season

    3. Remember grundy being most traded out player i think after r1 last year. As they say, form is temporary, class is permanent.

      1. He went (comparatively) missing in the second half but by then the damage was done, was always guaranteed a huge score on scaling.

Looked very puffed and slow by the end but had done a mountain of work by then.

Still not sure I went the right way between Gawn and Grundy, but not going to get panicky over one match, especially when English showed the same form as when Grundy smashed him last year. Grundy was always on for a huge one but he only gets to play English once.

      1. Maybe. Last season’s form is a slightly more reliable guide than last week’s form.

But I dunno, there’s something up at the dogs and some round 1 selections certainly raised an eyebrow.

Unlike Carlton, they had all the fight back of a wet lettuce leaf.

        1. i’m worried … and annoyed at myself for last minute trade in of Dunks for Oliver, who I’d had all pre season … hmmmm not happy for not sticking with my original plans ….

          1. Oliver would have been better… now.

Who knows how you will feel in 3 weeks.

Premo picks are for more than 1 week.

  11. Well it’s official. Don’t listen to me when it comes to captaincy picks! In fact … ever!
    Cripps into Dunkley!
At least I traded the best of the three out tonight (Macrae-103) for Jelly! Just hope that pays off short-term .

Should have listened to our new resident king of the Captaincy Pciks, GD. Great call mate

Just a shocking night for the Dogs. It happens. They’ve got the Blues next week, watch them all go 140+.

  12. My rucks are Grundy and Naismith with Xerri as the emerg. At the start of the season McGrath was going to be my breakout player at M5 and Jacobs as my emerg with him making so much $$$. This also makes sense for a back up ruckman and gives me flexibility with who to field between Jacobs and Naismith. Instead i went Bont as my M5 who seems intent about giving away frees and making a statement in the middle.

TU Love the gutsy move, make it and take the risk
TD Don’t get greedy go the Bont
