Game Chat – Essendon v GWS

Written by Motts on June 27 2019

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Thursday, June 27, 7.50pm AEST

What it means for Essendon: The Bombers’ finals hopes are only just hanging on after their comprehensive defeat at the hands of West Coast last week. They have struggled against the best teams this year and need a win to keep within touching distance of the top eight.

What it means for Greater Western Sydney: The Giants have won four of their past five games and are in good shape. This is their first visit to Marvel Stadium this year so they’ll be keen to get another win on the board in Melbourne, where they are 1-1 so far this season.

The stat: Giants midfielder Josh Kelly has averaged 28 disposals in four games against Essendon, which is the second best average against any of his opponents (narrowly behind 28.75 disposals in four games against Hawthorn).

The match-up: Patrick Ambrose v Jeremy Cameron

Essendon defender Patrick Ambrose signed a two-year contract extension and is playing the best footy of his career. He would seem best suited to take on star Giants forward Jeremy Cameron, who is leading the Coleman Medal race with 40 goals. But Cameron’s form isn’t reflected in the Official AFL Player Ratings, where he’s ranked the 107th best player in the game.

It’s a big week for: Adam Saad

The running half-back was subdued by West Coast last week, held to 12 disposals and little influence after the Eagles made plans to shut him down. He needs to be back firing to give the Bombers a chance on Thursday.

Big call: Giants star Toby Greene boots five people in the face in the best kung-fu performance of his season.

Mottsy’s Tip: Greater Western Sydney by 30 points

  2. Tossed a coin to decide between Hately and Clarke for the E tonight. It came up Heads for Hately.

Come on Jackson, you’re playing for Cripps this week!

  3. I still can’t get my head around trading Hately in. Are punters expecting him to hold his spot and if so why? Surely one player being out (DeBoer) means jack.

Or are most taking the 70k increase and running?

  4. Couldn’t take Hately (or Hind) this week because I needed to trade out Corbett to avoid a donut, so here’s hoping he spuds it up something shocking. Not holding my breath though.

  6. For those who missed it, GWS let cameras inside their match committee. Greene may play deep forward to take Saad out of it; Merrett and Shiel likely to cop some attention.

        1. Had this conversation with a mate this week after there was a trivia question regarding what the bombers mascot was. Honestly makes 0 sense to me hahaha

  9. TU Bring in Sloane this week for Setterfield
TD Sit on the cash, letting Setterfield fatten up more (BE 28), now he’s named on the ball

      1. Haha, all good. Whole family go for Essendon, except my old man and I who go for West Coast. So, I’m hoping your boys get up- not to mention it’ll allow us to jump the Giants on the ladder if we beat the Hawks.

  12. Harry Himmelberg! Remember him in the pre-season chat FT?
He and Papley will be starter considerations for me in 2020. Outstanding footballers the both, more time up the ground, Pap in the guts and Cheeseburger on the wing … we might not have a lot to choose from. Just sayin’ 😉

    1. Yeah, remember you touting Himmelberg/Weideman as PODs. Think you’re onto something with Himmelberg, AS. Even though he’s been playing as the deepest FWD, he’s still gettting amongst it, positioning himself well and taking solid contested marks.

      1. Berger looks like he’s playing that contested role on a wing for the kick-INs. And he’s good at it. Tends to hang or bolt forward from the contest depending on the clearance. Good signs.
        Pap’s a freak and I love ‘im

  14. Watching the game, Mummy seems past it. Matching the taps somewhat with Bellchambers but only 1 tackle and 3 handballs to halftime doesn’t seem good enough.

We need a poll to see how many frees Mummy will give away each week. 5 atm.

    1. Has to be the second-worst off-season decision/trade. To COL picking up Beams. Maybe 3rd to STK and Hanners. Who knows?
Will look up frees against after the game.

  15. Given that GWS’s footy skills are as elite/clean as the HAW’s recent flags-winning mob ever were, do we not think they should be killing teams like ESS (no disrespect) if they have any aspirations of winning a flag with this group?!?

Personally hoping for a big second half. They’re the best team to watch by far.

    4

    1. not sure mate – they’ve been touted as “potentially winning the flag” for the last 3 or so years … they keep not quite stepping up … so something stops them …

    2. I break footy down into three parts:
      Neither team has the ball
      Your team has the ball
The other team has the ball

I’ve never seen a good team care so little about when “The other team has the ball”.

      1. I hear you mate but their CP count has improved markedly on the last couple of years. Still not convinced, but their pressure is way better than ever before.

    3. They are almost too skilful and need a bit of mongrel in them, aka the Lions in their three-peat era. Need a few hard tacklers and guys who can do some physical damage but legally (eg Stack tackle)

  16. So lets see a mini Poll here on the thread:

T/U – if you traded in Hately
T/D – if you went Hind / someone else …

    20

    21
    1. based on game time alone, it doesn’t look good for Hately – only 66% TOG … so scoring well for that low time in play …

    1. and now that won’t help keep him on the field!! gives away the free which costs a goal … he wont be back next week!!

      1. He was cramping up and couldn’t even defend when Essendon had the ball 70m out, and that was only half way through the last quarter

  19. Kelly 7 points for handballing at Taranto’s knees but involved in a scoring chain. Then doesn’t lose a point for a turnover handball in D50
