Game Chat – Essendon v Hawthorn

Written by Father Dougal on March 25 2017

Venue: MCG, Saturday, March 25, 7.25pm AEDT

Last Time They Met: R12, 2016, Hawthorn 23.13 (151) d Essendon 6.7 (43) at Etihad Stadium

Game notes: The traditional rivals meet under the MCG lights in what shapes as one of the most anticipated games of Rd1. There is plenty to look forward to for both sides, with the Bombers welcoming back a host of players from doping suspensions and ushering in a new era after four years ruined by the supplements saga. New captain Dyson Heppell will lead the club out and former skipper Jobe Watson will be among the familiar faces coming back to the red and black. The Hawks, too, will have a new-look line-up, with champion midfielders Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis having departed the club and former skipper Luke Hodge to serve a one-match internal suspension for not informing the club that he would miss a recent training session. Gun recruits Jaeger O’Meara and Tom Mitchell will make their Hawthorn debuts in front of what is expected to be a crowd of more than 80,000 fans.

Father Dougal’s Tip: Hawthorn by 40.

Father Ted’s Tip: Sharks by 14.

Father Jack’s Tip: Drink!

While we do our best to update posts with end of quarter scores, we aren’t always online so if you have access to the scores and see they haven’t gone into the Comments section of this post, the Community would love it if you could help us out.

    Not sure if scoring correct??

    1. What’s wrong with scoring Mitchell killing it, first qtr points broke at just before ate tme. He dropped 23 points for some reason.

      1. I don’t have fantasia but he dropped from 50 to 22 at qtr time. They deducted a bunch of points and added to the wrong people. McGrath was one of them.

      2. Scoring has been screwed all weekend.

Would be better if they just shut it down, the amount of people still pondering is absurd!

  5. Man, I am continents away from the G, and I can feel that place rocking over the radio.
Glad to hear my hopeful POD in Zerrett is performing seemingly superb. Can’t trust the scores now obviously but just to hear it is great. We’ve been waiting for Footy season over in Canada! Replay of this game on cable over here in a couple mornings time so will be happy to see how it all went down!

      1. Thanks Schwarz!

Will check it out. We usually get the Friday and Saturday night games here every week, but at the start of the season Canada is still wrapping up its coverage of Curling Championships so we are always a bit behind at the start. Was glad to see the Dogs/Pies game live to open the week though!

Hope to make it over to Melbourne to visit my friend that introduced the game to me (real and supercoach) sooner rather than later. A dream to go to the MCG to see the Dees play. And i hear they have ‘kickabouts’ after the games sometimes, so it would be awesome for my first time holding a Sherrin to be on that famous ground! (And then likely spraying my first kick super wide from right in front of the goal square haha)

Good luck this year to you and everybody here.

        1. We call it “kick to kick”. Often involves a pack trying to take speccy’s at each end.

Was glad to see it coming back in vogue. Playing on the big ground after the game was always a favourite thing if mine as a kid.

  6. My Mighty Bombers win 116 to 91!!

Just keep an eye on the scores folks … can’t trust scores on the site we are getting them from!!

  7. As great as Merrett was, his output dropped sharply when Hawthorn put a soft tag on him. Just keep this in mind if you’re thinking of trying to bring him in on the back of tonight’s game.

  8. As a Carlton supporter, I can hardly believe that I am saying this, but I’m genuinely happy that Essendon won tonight.

    1. I’m glad to see them get some runs on the board too.

I’m also interested to see how the Hawks will end up this year and who is going to provide their run through the middle.

      Go the Cats!

  9. Kudos to anyone who started with Heppell. I really thought he would take a while to get back to top form, but he’s there already.
