Game Chat – Essendon v Hawthorn

Written by Motts on June 14 2019

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Friday, June 14, 7.50pm AEST

What it means for Essendon: It’s the first game of a big three weeks for the Bombers if they’re to make a dash to the finals. They face West Coast (away) and then Greater Western Sydney after the Hawks, so need to bag a win before facing the top-four contenders.

What it means for Hawthorn: The Hawks are similarly middle-road like the Bombers, so if they’re to stay in the race for the top eight, being a win ahead of their rivals would give them a handy position.

The stat: Hawthorn’s had a truly up-and-down season. Alastair Clarkson’s side hasn’t been able to string together back-to-back wins yet, and in the past seven weeks have alternated between wins and losses. If the trend continues, it’s not good news for the Bombers.

The match-up: James Sicily v Jake Stringer

Stringer is expected to return from his hamstring strain to take on the Hawks, and could a match-up against gun defender Sicily await? Sicily is ranked the second best small-medium defender in the game according to the Official AFL Player Ratings.

It’s a big week for: Jack Gunston

After a six-goal haul in the Hawks’ round 10 win over Port Adelaide, Gunston didn’t hit the scoreboard in their loss to Brisbane in round 11 before their bye last week. At his best he’ll pose problems for the Bombers.

Big call: The Worpedo is best afield with 33 disposals and a goal in a damaging midfield performance.

Mottsy’s Tip: Hawthorn by 20 points

  2. Like the tip.
Had forgotten about Gunston. If he truly has rediscovered his kicking form then he has to be in the mix for the back half of the season huh?

  3. As a long time Essendon supporter, this is the match up I love the most … remembering all those clashes back in the 80’s, 90’s etc … bit different these days though … Bombers have been a tad disappointing this year (from where they were expected to be)

  4. Just panicked for a second there as Eddie said its been pouring in Melbourne – thought the match was at the G but see its at Marvel – whew … can you send some rain up here please??

  5. Gee Clarke is tempting to grab in only his second game and being named in the mids again … should stick with the rules (Josh Glenn) though and stay with Bewley yeah??

    1. If you can’t go Bewley this and Clarke next, ie only get one, I’d go Clarke. JS has to be pretty good given he’s held his spot with all your INs this week?!

      1. Just what im in the process of doing. This was my three trade bye week, and as i can now hold off the rob/grundy trade, its clarke next week. He’s a 200 gamer.

        1. haha – I’m happy if Sicily gets no more than 70 … *wink* … and price drop helps me get him cheaper next week or later!! + it means he hasn’t had too big an impact on the game!!

    1. Dodgednone there. If Steele hadn’t gone down, he’d have been an IN for me this week.
Happy to do the scores for this one GD. With PJ sick will offer up when I can on the weekend 🙂

  12. Macca, PJ and AS. All three of you geniuses just posted the scores lol. I held off posting myself knowing this would happen.

Who’s getting them for the rest of the game?

  13. Sicily to back flank for the second half, Frawley/Brand/o’brien to be traded to anyone next year ( hopefully)

    1. 30 points in 21 minutes thus far … wish Worpel would learn to do that each quarter … goes missing too often to be a quality mid …

  14. Seeing the Hawks struggle to take F50 marks, seeing Clarko swing the talls around to try and find a target it got me thinking, why on earth is Roughy not back in the team. Surely he’d be a good target and would kick 1-2 goals a game.

    1. roughy’s gone mate , too old
      clarko looks fwd not back
gotta see what he’s got over the next premiership window
      rough be retired by then
but he’s still got value as a teacher for the up n comers

  15. Asked this before but it got pushed up by scores posts, so I’ll ask again: thoughts on Henderson as M8?

Clearly more than a purple patch now, on track for B&F, looks great.

      1. better every week and plays that lovely SC role just in front of the contest. gonna overtake McGrath in the breakout stakes.

        2

    1. Don’t like the selection as he’s heavily dependent on amassing a large amount of the ball and doesn’t gather sufficient contested possessions or tackles to compensate in those poor games. Devoid of consistency and an insufficient ceiling.

Around 2 dozen players I’d prefer to select in the mids instead.

      3

    1. yeah – best part of 50 points FFS … not what I wanted (sorry to owners!) I’d like him cheaper in a week or two …

wingard , who hopefully wont have his hammy niggles
maybe pick up coniglio & a key fwd

    1. imo , just time , more experience into our players
clarko won’t admit it publicly but the hawks have been in a rebuild since 2016 ,
when yr no 1 & 2 onfield mids have about 40 games experience combined ,
& yr 2 key fwds have about 40 combined also ,
takes a coach time to build the right team around em ,
      scully , wingard , mohr , impy & scrimshaw ,
are still learning the hawthorn system ,
they need another pre season under clarkos guidance ,
getting back tommy , brich & mohr next year will be a big step fwd ,
our recruiters & VFL affiliate are excellent ,
they’ll do their jobs well & add good depth for next year ,
the rest of this year will be more about the players & support staff working on the right things for next year
      2020 they’ll have a real crack like 2008 ,
then we should have an 8 year window again with our young list

clarko knows its all about silverware ,
more importantly , he knows how to get it

      1. Mitchell is one of the top 5 midfielders in the comp and he’s been out all season. I think his play last year papered over some of the hawks’ issues.

  22. think that’s the first game this year that i haven’t had a single SC player playing. The only other side of no interest currently is NTH.
That may change on all three fronts over the coming weeks.

    1. oops – forgot to say, Zerrett IS worth it … have held him all year … gets some bad calls by umps at times … and yes, struggles with a hard tag … but most do … but, fingers crossed (do not smite me SC Gods!) i’ve been happy thus far …

      3

  23. with Merrett likely to be tagged the next three weeks (Hutchings, De Boer and Hewett/Clarke), he’ll have to wait for now.

  24. How long would it take in local footy to knock stratten out,
    il tell ya 10 seconds
htf do they let that bullshit happen, why because know one wants to get suspended.

    8

    1
      1. as a hawk supporter im a little shocked that stratts used the pinchy tactic
im sure he’s probably just stressed , having the C thrown on him & the team struggling
was a completely inappropriate thing to do & should be fined for it
back in the day i played full back & if someone started well you’d just throw a knee into em in the pack n that was that
        old ways are the best

        2

    1. Stratton’s actions were amongst the most cowardly you could hope to not see. Picking on a little bloke is bad enough, but doing it when you know you can’t be dealt with in the old fashioned way, is as weak as pi55. I remember Craig Kelly doing this, but never to plugger.
