Game Chat – Essendon v North Melbourne

Written by Father Dougal on July 1 2018

WHERE AND WHEN: Etihad Stadium, Sunday, July 1, 3.20pm AEST

SUMMARY
If Essendon is any chance to make the finals it needs to win this week against eighth-placed North Melbourne, whose spot the Bombers will be eyeing off. John Worsfold’s side has won four of its past five games, and last week travelled to Optus Stadium and cruised to a comfortable win over the Eagles after a brilliant opening quarter. The Bombers are playing a far better style, their three recruits have worked and they are a sniff to feature in September but will need to continue their winning run. North won’t be easy to overcome, though, as it showed in Saturday night’s last-gasp win over the Western Bulldogs. Captain Jack Ziebell’s goal in the final minute gave the Roos their eighth win of the season as they continued to defy predictions cast their way at the beginning of the year. Had they lost, the Roos would have dropped to 10th position on the ladder and the pressure will remain high with a bunch of sides vying for a top-eight place.

LAST FIVE TIMES
R18, 2017, Essendon 20.12 (132) d North Melbourne 16.9 (105) at Etihad Stadium
R8, 2016, North Melbourne 10.14 (74) d Essendon 8.12 (60) at Etihad Stadium
R16, 2015, North Melbourne 14.9 (93) d Essendon 9.14 (68) at Etihad Stadium
R7, 2015, North Melbourne 13.15 (93) d Essendon 12.10 (82) at Etihad Stadium
2EF, 2014, North Melbourne 14.9 (93) d Essendon 12.9 (81) at Etihad Stadium

Father Dougal’s Tip: I expect close, unless it is a blowout! Um, well, North by 10.

While we do our best to update posts with end of quarter scores, we aren’t always online so if you have access to the scores and see they haven’t gone into the Comments section of this post, the Community would love it if you could help us out.

  1. Can anyone confirm if Ahern is currently playing VFL? He was listed as an emergency
He is currently my loophole option
    Cheers

  2. Stupid loopholing error! Sure Ahern in is going to catch a few loopholers out. For some he’ll be stuck as captain instead of Titch!!

For me my dumb error was loopholing Rocky against Holman for M8. Put Ahern on the field and now wooshka I’m stuck with Ahern on the field. Worse still I could’ve used Spargo as my non playing loophole option but mind was elsewhere and didn’t think it through clearly enough.

    1. I always look at the draw at the start of the year and pick a player to act as loophole v. Olango is my best player almost, and with Duman, means i have late playing c loop for rest of the year, and hopefully R23.

  3. Genuinely excited about today’s game. MASSIVE game for both teams. As most North supporters would agree with, it’s Essendon that we want to beat the most.

  4. Now that I’m stuck with Oliver on the bench and missing Gawn’s VC score, who do I field?
    TU: Ahern
    TD: Giro

        1. We should. And it’s The Scott Twin™ again! Looks like he’s starting sharing tactics between his two coaching gigs.

    1. How many trades do you have up your sleeve? If you have a lot you could trade one of them to a non-playing player.

    1. I was about to go to bed when I read this. Turned the telly back on. I’m gonna pay for it tomorrow though.

  5. Right now it’s looking like it will be 3 games this week in which both teams score over 100. The AFL might want to hold off on those rule changes.

  6. Final score Essendon 13.6.84 defeated North Melbourne 10.4.64

….. oh wait, hang on, it’s half time. Thought footy was dead though. Thought the only way to resurrect the dead carcus was a litany of absurd rule changes. This game has two teams playing a high octane, fiercely contested game of footy. Just gotta get the 20pt margin back in the third term.

    1. Ahern’s heading for an 80-90 range score. Playing a lot in the guts. Damage won’t be as bad for all as first thought. 64 at 3/4 time.
