Game Chat – Essendon vs Hawthorn

Written by Thommo on March 20 2021

Where and when: Marvel Stadium at 7:25pm (AEST)

Last time they met: R14 2020: Essendon 13.9 (87) def Hawthorn 10.11 (71) at Adelaide Oval.

It still hurts me to recount this match. The Hawks looked like their circa 2015 selves in the first half and lead by 36 points at half-time. Daniher in his first game back from injury had barely touched leather and all was right with the world.

Then the Bombers started and the Hawks stopped.  Daniher sprang to life with second-half goals and Essendon kicked 11 goals to Hawthorn’s 3 goals. Ugly!

Match Preview: With nine players debuting for their new clubs, this will not be a ‘line in the sand’ rematch. Possibly not even a good match to watch considering neither team should feature in September. Weirdly the Hawks were favourites in early markets despite limited preseasons for their star midfielders, perhaps a reaction to their new-look forward line.

Possibly this match is only for the fans!

Thommo Watch:

Essendon

Merrett traditionally starts the year slow but he does feast on the Hawks’ midfield and enjoyed a stellar preseason. Ridley has also been a popular selection while value seekers have loaded up on Caldwell and even Sam Draper. Any takers for Heppell named on a wing but earmarked for time in defence?

Hawthorn

The Hawks are all about the rookie this season. Brockman and Kosi have both got a game ahead of the popular Connor Downie (vest candidate) while Tom Phillips looks to have locked down the wing as expected. A few thrill-seekers have locked in CJ (Jiath), hoping he has locked down the Sicily role. It will be interesting to see how Tom Mitchell returns from shoulder surgery.

Thommo’s Tip: Hawks by 6 points (zero confidence).

  1. Dilemma here. Didn’t realise I had Rowe on my bench. I have a full forward line (ie all playing). I chucked the emergency on Rowe and have Jones (Ess) on my field.

    Do I:
T/U – Cop Rowe’s large score on the bench.
T/D – Trade out Jones for a last minute loophole and grab Rowe’s score.

  2. Thoughts so far.
Got talked out of Brayshaw and into Cripps.
Psyched myself out of Macrae and Petracca.
Dusty would have been a nice touch.
Do I swap danger for Dusty?
Praying for a better end of the week and a win for the Dons.

  3. Thinking of making a thread each round for people to ask who to field. Seems to be a dilemma for us every weekend, especially in these early rounds.
