Game Chat – Fremantle vs Carlton

Written by Thommo on August 15 2020

Where and When: Optus Stadium, Saturday 15 August 2020 at 8:10pm (AEST)

Last time they met: Carlton 11.13 (79) def Fremantle 11.9 (75) at Optus Stadium

What it means for Fremantle: The Dockers are back! While they will be pushing uphill to make the finals, they are a still a mathematical chance (sorry for the cliche) and they will have a crack tonight, if only to try for three straight wins.

What is means for Carlton: Who knows with the Blues. For a while there, they seemed to be making ground and were finally going to play finals, but now? They have fallen back down to where they ended last season, looking to finish in the bottom four again. Surely they have to improve one day?

Supercoach watch: Most eyes will be on Brayshaw after he torched the Hawks last week while Fyfe looks to be back in form again. Hopefully Cripps and Doc can also join the party.

Thommo Watch: I am a long-suffering Cripps coach praying for some late season boom from the big fella.

Thommo’s Tip: Freo by 12 points.

  1. Thanks Thommo.

Liking my boys in this one. We seem to like being back at home.

Heading back to the Q Hub , I’m not sure how long they can keep it up?

Well done getting Clarry Oliver in. Seems to be going pretty well.

I’m pretty happy (so far) with him as my Captain this week. 😉

    Go Freo !

  2. T/U – Change plans and bring in Walters & Fisher for King & D Smith .. or keep …
T/D – Just do King to Walters

237k in the bank but with Smith not playing I’d be 1 down & King has an epic BE so really should go.

  3. Brought Fyfe in this week to finish off my MIDs. Would love him to go large to offset the impending Dev Smith donut I’m copping.

    1. Hey GB
Good luck with Fyfe . Great first half
I was worried that our sides we becoming very similar.
I finished my midfield with 2 relative PODS
      Lyons and Merrett .
Hf ave AArts if named to cover D Smith after trading B Smith 🙁

  4. ICYMI.
Elijah Taylor (Sydney) will be suspended for the rest of the season due to breach covid 19 protocols.
Taylor breached the protocols after his partner entered the Sydney Swans quarantine accommodation in Western Australia when not authorised to do so.The Sydney Swans have been sanctioned $50,000 for the breach, with $25,000 of that amount suspended.

    1. Man, I saw the 37 on his back and got sucked in after his first game.

Swans have mentioned he’d be further sanctioned by the club. Wonder what they’ll do? Would stripping him of Goodes’ number for the year and letting him earn it back be a good thing, or just humiliate him?

    1. nice one!

I was hoping Serong’s run would last a bit longer, but he’ll still make some cash and has been one of the few serviceable rookies this year!

  5. Docherty.

I’ve heard a few podcasts who have been saying he won’t be final D6 for a month or so, and he’s still yet to break 100 since round 4.

I plan to hold, my team has way more problems than Docherty. But, I haven’t seen a lot of discussion on him on this site apart from the Poll.

What is everyone’s thoughts on him? Is he shipped out for a luxury upgrade for finals? Will you grab him next year if you have him now?

    1. planning to upgrade doc , hurn , smith & smith asap
as i have no onfield rooks left to upgrade
      should take 8 trades , i have 9 left

      1. nice one Jo! I think Collins is a good target if you don’t already have him. Had a higher average than Williams and Stewart prior to the game against Dons, and after a shocker should come down nicely. He was consistent before that, but he could also run the same course as Docherty/Hurn!

I started in round 6, so bought him at his absolute peak hahaha.

  6. Wrong thread, apologies!

10 (+3 extra) trades left, 2 rooks on field. Running thin on cash cows. Have Louis Butler (WBD) sitting on the midfield bench alongside Wicks and Rivers – was planning to go Rivers > Bytel, but forgot (doh!).

Worth going Butler > Bytel, for the sake of having an extra warm body on the midfield pine and (hopefully) some cash gen?

    Cheers

    1. God, it’s hard to predict which rookies really have js these days!

That said, I think that moving out those who aren’t playing for rookies who will get 4 games min of cash gen is a good move this year, and sadly something of a necessity to avoid donuts from rested players towards the end of the season.

I feel like Geelong will continue be very aggressive in managing players out of the side or resting them hugely in games.

  7. Similar to the Sydney swans player bringing in his gf. However, story is it was a lady of the night! Got caught out I’m told…. I’m hoping it’s not true.

  9. Fyfe and Walters struggling as they are both playing majority forward and its all Carlton this quarter, kicking efficiency going forwards has been terrible for freo.

  10. Fyfe +12 points since QT – and here I was getting excited after that 68 point start.

SURELY they put him on the ball for the last quarter?

    1. He went straight in Jo and scored 40 in 5 minutes. You were spot on!Hope he can keep it up for the last 10 🙂

  11. problem with fyfe is that he’s a great player but he doesnt operate well as part of a group
the midfield works better as a whole with out him
doesnt bring those around him in to the game , thus every ones low scores in the midfield when he’s in there

    1. Late hit after Doc had kicked it. Lucky for Doc and the Blues but from the replay it was the right decision.

Edit – just saw it again. Maybe not!

      1. Yeah, no doubt 48 is generous but I’m saying you can see CD’s logic: contested possessions valued highly in a tight, sloppy game.

Beyond that, little classless to complain about a player’s scoring if you don’t have them. Cop it and move on.

  12. Since when does the free kick get taken down the ground when it goes out on the full? Similar to if it’s a point. Free doesn’t get taken on the goal line. It goes back to where the kick was paid. It’s only if it bounces in play that it is downfield.
    Has this rule changed?

    2

    1
    1. yes
if the infringement is committed late in the game
& after the kick , it is paid downfield
      its a new rule

        1. jo was being sarcastic, DiscoStu 🙂

It’s unlikely the AFL will admit this is an error, in the same way they didn’t admit Ward’s dive v Dons was staging, because it had an impact in the outcome of the game.

          1. Haha got me
I keep hearing there was an amendment to the rule this year that they do pay it down the ground even when it goes out of bounds. First I’ve heard of it.
