Game Chat – Geelong v Essendon

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on March 9 2020

Where and when: Central Reserve, Monday 9 March, 4.40pm AEDT

Watchlist:

Jack STEVEN (GEEL) FWD/MID @ $361,700

Excitingly named on the ball in his first game for the Cats. Hopefully his health, both mental and physical, are right and he can pop off in the guts.

Devon SMITH (ESS) FWD/MID @ $335,800

Delivered a bi-polar performance last week: floated around aimlessly at HF without much impact in the first half, then was back to tackling and brawling in the middle in the second. Will need to see some continuity today if we’re to start him.

Jacob TOWNSEND (ESS) FWD @ $222,900

Also confused us in Marsh One. Absent early, then attending center bounces and off with an injury scare before the game ended. Monitor closely.

Brandon ZERK-THATCHER (ESS) DEF @ $189,000

What do we have to do to get a rookie that isn’t exorbitantly priced? Jeez. That aside, the Dons seem to rate BZT and have slotted him into the back pocket again today. Fair few defensive outs for the Dons, so he’ll need to fight for his spot.

That concludes the Marsh Series game chats. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed putting them together, hopefully the watchlists were somewhat helpful and cheers to everyone who contributed to the discussion during the matches.

Notable Absentees: Joe DANIHER (ESS), Dyson HEPPELL (ESS).

  1. you shouldnt flirt with danger in the engine room but Narkle both have my interest so i’ll be watching narkle closely being named on the ball again.

  2. Geelong has stated there going at almost full strength. So since the club actually said it, if the dons win it’s legit somewhat this time.
    But we’ll get flogged, lol.
Hope bzerk locks down his spot and danger justifies electing another uber ahead of him.

  3. Cat Steven is carrying a few pounds! Hasn’t lost his ability to find the pill tho. Watching closely.

    1. He is fighting to take over from DSmith. I just know I will end up picking the wrong one of the two.

  4. Can we really start Smith and Steven up forward!? Both could easily finish top 8 if fit all year! Anyone taking the risk?

    1. Flirting with Whitfield, Martin, Petracca, Steven, Smith and then three rookies. If I chicken out on Sauce at R2 then Smith is the first to go though.

  5. With lack of rookies, z Guthrie might have to come into calculations. I think he’ll get plenty of chances to prove himself, if nothing else.

  6. I like Parish. Had him last year but not this year and I am having second thoughts about him as F3. The noise keeps getting lauder and lauder

      1. @dean any other year I’d call you crazy with mid madness in 1 line but this year I think it can honestly be pulled off….

  8. With Ambrose out 7 odd more weeks from now, Berzerk has just played himself into my backline I think (round 1 team lineup pending)

  9. Plus I just love typing the word ‘Berzerk’….
Reminds of playing Atari 2600 with my brother many years ago…
(Apologies to anyone under the age of about 35 on this website)

    1. Haha, yep. The simple fact that I have someone on my team I can refer to as “Bezerk” has made his price tag easier to stomach.

  10. parish wont kick 3.3 every week, pass.
    Steven & Dev, tick.
Danger only 70% TOG for 115, interested.
    Thatch, TICK!!!

  11. Judging by todays performance, Steven should average 90-100, making him a fwd lock presumably. Does Guthrie and Selwood knock him out of the mids as much? On the other hand, Sicily should average 95-105 and Doedee or Roberton should average 75-90 (not a keeper but good value)

With Budarick unlikely to start round 1,

    T/U Sicily and Budarick
    T/D Roberton and Steven

    1. Guthrie will play some defensive side of stoppage role so won’t affect Steven, Selwood would a little bit.

  12. As a nauseating bombers fan (looking at you GD !!), I say…..

The defensive hyphen….I spotted him last year in the Magoos, and said he was the next Hooker/Hurley. No need to change my mind despite getting towelled last week. With hooker weeks away, js is very good.
Parish/McGrath. Start Mcgrath…..contested ball monster. Parish a fwd upgrade target.
Smith….only 335k…….hehehehehe. Will cover his be on tackles.

    1. Who? Duncan’s a winger, Selwood will pinch hit in there, Steven (IF FIT mind & body) will fill a big potion of Kelly’s role with Narkle picking up most of the rest.

  13. I’m thinking steven’s a trap.
He’s started getting calf problems(big worry at his age), there are more geelong mids to return and he could (but hopefully not) need some more personal time off at some point.
Smith i don’t trust either but he seems to have less down side, i mean he’s going to average 7-10 tackles a game just to start with.
