Game Chat – Geelong v Hawthorn

Written by Father Dougal on July 21 2019

Where and when: MCG, Sunday July 21, 1.10pm AEST

What it means for Geelong: Shoring up the perfect MCG record. Unbeaten from their four matches this year, Sunday will be the Cats’ last match at the home of football until finals. Since 2012, the Cats are 3-7 at the MCG in September.

What it means for Hawthorn: Another chance to get games into youngsters such as Mitchell Lewis, James Worpel and Oliver Hanrahan against the top side on the big stage.

The stat: Prior to this year, Gary Ablett has received 25 Brownlow votes in 25 games against the Hawks, the equal-most of any club polled against in his career alongside North Melbourne. He was among the best when the two sides met in round five with 23 disposals and three goals.

The match-up: Jed Bews v Chad Wingard

Elevated to the senior side a fortnight ago to take on Eddie Betts, Bews (No.313 in the Official AFL Players Ratings) will likely go to the Hawks’ most dangerous small forward. Wingard (No.152) is still working towards full fitness after a series of hamstring setbacks.

It’s a big week for: Paul Puopolo

Having kicked just two goals in his past 11 games, including none in the last month, the 31-year-old is in a fight to earn a new contract for 2020. A big performance against the Cats would only work in his favour.

Father Dougal’s Tip: Cats by 15 points.

  1. Birchall is a huge out for those that brought him in last week and this week.
    Howe is his replacement.
    Cats Unchanged.

        1. Kelly usually the tag target but given Danger’s record v Hawks, Howe might give him a look.

  2. I was lauding myself bringing Sicily in at the perfect time but I am seriously considering trading him out again. He looks like he isn’t engaged in the game half the time and I can see him costing me in the finals. Am I alone here?

  3. Sunday bl00dy Sunday strikes.
4 playing: Danger C, Kelly, Stewart and Sicily
    Current ave. 78, 0/4 tons.
    Why did I buy Sicily?

If Hore and Moore hadn’t got injured they’d’ve have been better D5/6 than Stewart, Sicily and/or Crisp so far.
DEF has been puss this year. FWDs?!? As good as my MIDs!! Go figure 🙂
