Game Chat – Gold Coast v Geelong

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on February 22 2020

Where and when: Metricon Stadium, Saturday 22 February, 7.40pm AEDT

Watchlist:

Matthew ROWELL (GCS) MID @ $207,300

Should be pretty easy to discern whether he’s the 2020 version of Walsh that we’re all hoping for. Not a matter of talent, more so whether the Suns have improved enough collectively to allow for decent scoring capacities.

Connor BUDARICK (GCS) MID/FWD @ $106,900

Nice little basement-ish rookie with DPP. Young kid and a tackling machine in the NAB-U18. What’s not to love?

Hugh GREENWOOD (GCS) FWD/MID @ $463,100

In order to be a viable pick and improve on his career average of 85, Greenwood will need to be playing pure, in the guts midfield. Think that might be tenuous given the amount of MID draft picks though. Watch closely.

Noah ANDERSON (GCS) MID @ $202,800

Same deal as Rowell. Again, improvement as a team is a prerequisite for selecting any Suns players.

Notable Absentees: Nakia COCKATOO (GEEL), Jack STEVEN (GEEL), Sam FLANDERS (GCS).

  1. Don’t have kayo or foxtel yet so will just be monitoring stats but hopefully Greenwood’s running through the guts & hoping Rowell has a stinker… could really use that 80k else where in my team.

  2. Thought supercoach players would be all over this game guess not my half time analysis is
Rowell – he will just get better and he is looking to be a lot like sam Walsh last year very close to a lock
Greenwood – running through the middle of the ground still unsure if he is worth it I still am favouring petracca over him (I had him before today so that hurts)
Budarick- was very impressive early he is in my team atm for 106k if he plays you can’t really go wrong
Let me know what you guys think

    1. Agreed Rowell looks great, especially that third effort late in the second when he looked spent. Gonna be a very good rookie this year and probable future star.
Budarick too. Runs like Laird! He’s been in my team as a MID/FWD loophole … looks like i’ll have to find another one. He’s been excellent.
Still appreciating Darcy Macpherson and Lachie Weller. Probably not for SC tho’.

Greenwood looked great early but didn’t see much of him in that second qtr.

Not sold on Petracca just yet.

      1. Have to say Petracca looked better than other years today – looks fitter. Maybe not enough as an initial starter, but has to be in the mix as an upgrade target with the poor options for FWDs this year …
Macpherson and Greenwood though, based on tonight, are making it interesting

          1. Will be waiting for a second game out of him.

Only way I can see him fitting requires a downgrade of Whitfield or Dusty, or writing off on of my underpricers in defence and shifting Hill back.

If he does punch out another blinder I am going to faced with a real quandary, and probably a written off bye round.

Might be time to go for the $1000 prize this year

    2. Close is cheap and has done enough.
Kennerly… errr had high hopes but is a pass.

      Steward is under done.

McLennan is a pass 🙁 was hoping he could sit on the pine in my team.

McPherson is on my watch list but he’d have to have another good game in the second match too.

  3. Looking forward to seeing sharp in this second half
another noticeable absentee is rankine not to sure what is happening there…

    1. Rankine has a shoulder issue, he received a knock to that area in the practice match against Brisbane last Saturday at Metricon Stadium

  4. Relevant HT scores:
    Suns
    Rowell 67
    Greenwood 62
    Budarick 46
    Anderson 29
    McLennan 15
    Cats
    Danger 46
Rookies Close, Stephens and Jarvis looking meh

  5. Rowell has played his way into my team goodbye 7 deep premo mids, not really a problem I can turn Rankine into TMac with the savings. Brad close is holding his spot so far IF he gets a r1 birth,
Shouldn’t get too excited though its only half time and GAJ has only had 2 touches and Danger has been almost absent from the midfield. So Rowell has been against 2nd stringers, still a top effort though

  6. Looks like I finally put together a decent watchlist lol. Budarick, Greenwood and Rowell all firing.

  7. Watching the GC vs Geelong game and cannot help but think
TU : Geelong is on the way down
TD : The Suns have seriously improved

    1. One pre season game does not make a summer….. or is it a winter?
Don’t worry about the cats. They’ll be there when the whips r crackin.

    2. i had a little punt on the Cats not making the 8 this year … i know it’s only pre-season but a lot of them look seriously underdone.

Also, did you know GCS always start the season well?!

      2019: L W W W (the loss was by 1pt to STK 😉 ) – no more wins for the year
      2018: W W L L W – one more win for the year
      2017: L L W W (first loss by 2pts) – 3 more wins for the year
      2016: W W W L – 3 more wins for the year

Might start a few of them and flog them as quickly as I can 😉

  8. My thoughts from tonight’s match – make of them what you will (looks like SC scores on FF have frozen at 3/4 time):
    CATS
    – Stewart looked hesitant and underdone at times (not worth starting, more an upgrade target I think)
    – Danger is going to need help in the mids ASAP. On this showing, and without Joel and Duncan, it may be a better option to start the Bont – but Danger having the R12 Bye was better for the structure – interesting choice ahead for many
    – Ablett – not really interested – hope he puts in more in the F&A
    – Close – hmmmm not sure
    SUNS
    – Greenwood has racked up points – not sure how good his hands are (low DE) – will have good and bad games I think – his points will come from tackles and CP’s. Should certainly be in the top 6/8 as a FWD at years end, whether you start him or not is a different question
    – Rowell – must have – looks good – FWIW I think Walsh was / is better!
    – Anderson – doesn’t appear to have translated to SC points thus far, but he does look good and has clean skills
    – Budarick – looks quite good – calm and composed
    – Macpherson – has to firm into serious consideration in your FWD line – if not to start, should make top 6/8 easily I think
    – B King – pity he is such a high starting price – looks quite good – challenges in the contests and looks more than handy
    – Ellis is going to be good for the Suns giving them composure behind the ball – as a pure Mid in SC though he is no good for us

      1. yep – they looked quite good though – the key factor is that there are not great options across the FWDs this year.
Not a lot of top line MF options (Whitfield, Dusty, Heeney & Walters – next best Ziebell) – once they are taking up the the first 4 or 5 spots, provided they stay on the field (which historically Whitfield may not), there isn’t much else.

KPPs traditionally don’t score enough – those playing mids with FWD status are the ones who score well …

Finally, 3300 points on offer in matches – Macpherson & Greenwood are going to have to get a chunk of those each week – if they stay fit and play 21/22 matches, they’ll be there!

    1. TOG indicates Danger did ok.
Rowell will be another Walsh and some,
Weller and Narkle watch lists, …..and more…….TOG Guys, TOG!

  9. As the only person ever to visit this forum who has also been voted B.O.G in a GF at Carrara/Metricon I assure you that when the humidity is gone southern opposition are a lot better. Winter footy is very different to summer footy in Queensland.

    1. why all the thumbs down? Might explain why they start each season so well and then fall in a heap once the humidity has gone?!

    2. As the only person ever to visit this forum who has played in a GF at Riverway Stadium / Townsville, I assure you that nobody on the Gold Coast or further afield truly understands what its like to play in real humidity…

    1. I gotchu, Mav.

      SC relevant scores at FT:

      SUNS
      MacPherson – 132
      Greenwood – 109
      Rowell – 100
      Budarick – 74
      Anderson – 59
      McLennan – 36

      CATS
      Narkle – 113
      Danger – 66
      Close – 51
      Stewart – 47
      Ablett – 33

Wouldn’t read too much into any of these scores though tbh. Geelong were underdone and barely tried; deflating their scores and in turn inflating the Suns’ scores. Suns were good, no doubt, but second Marsh game will give some clarity and balance.

  10. For those who don’t understand my ramblings about TOG (Time On Ground), it works like this – thanks to fanfooty,

Use percentage formula: divide score by TOG and multiply by 100.

    Possessions, same formula.

You will see what could have been if they played a whole game on field. (In theory)

Hope that helps to create watch lists, hair pulling, sleepless nights and many thoughts of our Father Dougal,- in a positive way of course.

Cheers, and welcome to my world.

    1. Spot on Chameleon

We will be providing ALL that info after each round of the Marsh Series, with a full and comprehensive round-up once the Series is completed.

Too early to tell just yet, but this info is critical for our rookie and ‘underpriced’ picks. More to come this week …
