Where and when: Giants Stadium, Saturday June 1, 1.45pm AEST
Last time they met: Giants Stadium, round 12, 2018: GWS 20.14 (134) defeated Gold Coast 4.2 (26)
The home side was inaccurate early but kicked 18.8 after quarter-time to romp to a three-figure win. Jeremy Cameron’s six goals and 26 possessions snared him three Brownlow Medal votes, while Josh Kelly (40 disposals and two goals), Lachie Whitfield (36 touches), Callan Ward (34 possessions, 10 clearances and two goals) and Jacob Hopper (29 touches and 12 clearances) also dominated.
What it means for GWS: They won’t talk about it publicly, but Saturday’s clash is a massive chance for the Giants to boost their percentage. Spots are going to be tight at the top of the ladder at the end of the season, so any opportunity to get an advantage must be taken.
What it means for Gold Coast: Taking on the Giants on the road is a big test for the Suns and they can continue to build respect from the rest of the League with a spirited showing. They pushed the ladder-leading Cats last week before falling away late. They will need to maintain their intensity for this one.
How GWS wins: The Giants’ tall forwards looks to be the Suns’ biggest worry with Jeremy Cameron, Harry Himmelberg and Jeremy Finlayson in superb form, and all dangerous in the air and at ground level. If the Giants’ mids gain control, those forwards will get plenty of chances.
How Gold Coast wins: The visitors must bring intensity and pressure around the contest from the opening bounce and deny the Giants any easy footy. If they don’t get blown away early and can stay in the game as long as possible, anything can happen.
The stat: The Giants won the clearances 54-36 in last year’s thrashing despite some lopsided hitout numbers (76-29) after (former) GWS ruckman Rory Lobb was injured. If the Suns give up that sort of advantage around stoppages on Saturday, they’re in for another long day.
The match-up: Jeremy Cameron v Jack Hombsch
The Coleman Medal leader bounced back from two weeks without a goal to kick three against Melbourne and has shown in the past he can sniff a big haul when he’s up against lower-ranked teams. Cameron will be a stiff test for his former Giants teammate.
It’s a big week for: Shane Mumford
The aggressive big man was well-beaten by Max Gawn last week and will give up another height advantage to Jarrod Witts in round 11. Mumford is an intense competitor and will set himself for the challenge of taking down the Gold Coast ruckman.
Big call: Cameron has booted 21 goals in his past four outings against the Suns and he’ll enjoy another afternoon out this week with a career-best eight majors.
Mottsy’s Tip: GWS by 1,000,000 points

Who to VC:
T.U: J. Kelly
T.D: Grundy
Comment: Whitfield
Whitfield
Going with Grundy but can’t help thinking Kelly will go nuts.
Forgot about switching Bines on for Goldy before last night’s match and Z Williams is my only other DNP so I can’t VC B Grundy and will instead VC J Kelly into either new recruit J Macrae or L Neale as captain.
This makes little sense to me. Kelly and Grundy play at the same time so why can’t you have it on Grundy? If you can’t on Grundy doesn’t that mean you can’t on Kelly either?
Bines is my only loop.
Goldy has already played.
Cannot take Grundy’s VC as there will be no DNP to captain.
By switching Bines on now for Grundy I can loop J Kelly as I can place the C on Bines with the E on Grundy.
ahhh so Grundy has to be the E for you to use Bines as the loop. Makes a lot more sense now
Any late changes? Waiting for the possibility of Hately being a late in before I trade Baker in instead.
Nope, bAps. No late changes.
Baker it is 🙁
Jackson Hately with another big day in the NEAFL. 30 possessions, 8 tackles & a goal for the young midfielder, far too good for this level.
Looking forward to seeing him in navy blue in 2020. 😉
Final teams #AFLGiantsSuns: No late changes.
Who scores more for the remainder of the season?
T/U J Cameron
T/D T Hawkins
Hawkins, has the softer run of the two.
Will Taranto keep his current average up?
TU: Yes
TD: No
How many free kicks will Mumford give away this week?
TU: 0 to 5
TD: 6 to 10
Comment: 11+
Easy 13
Who would you rather have for the rest of the season?
TU: Taranto
TD: Sloane
Well, the boat’s sailed on Taranto. My main concern with Sloane is that his record against the Demons isn’t great (although Bernie Vince isn’t there anymore, so that could change), plus he gets the De Boer tag next week.
Okay, have gone Constable to Sloane. Not overly confident about him over the next two weeks, but he should be fine after that.
Really impressed with how GWS are tracking this year. Getting a win at the G has gotta give them a bit of confidence also. Their record at the G was 2W and 14L going into that game.
Can’t see the Suns getting near them today.
GWS by 70
Jezza Cameron to kick 7 &
Whitfield to have 40+
Don’t forget the win down at Geelong. Not too many teams travel down there and win. Gws looking seriously good for the gf this year.
Coniglio having the start I wanted Kelly to have.
Jack Bowes looking to come off with a Quad injury
Whitfield got sandwiched in a tackle, coming to the bench and looks a little worse for wear. Keep an eye on him.
Appears to be nothing to be concerned about
Also seeming to cop a tag from Holman. Expecting a low score from he today
Sorry, that may be my fault. I finally got him in this week.
Same, aaaaarghhhh!! Year from hell for me
I hope you’se all made MAYNARD ya captian!
Holman just copped a massive hit and stayed down for a bit. 30 seconds later Cameron copped a very similar hit. Both seem winded, see how they come up after quarter time break
Come on Whitfield. Is he even on the ground??? Traded him in this week after he killed me the last two weeks, then he puts up 1 handball to QT!
It’s taken longer than normal but I think I’ve finally cracked it with my team this season…
They are getting very physical in this game. Whitfield copped another big hit but nothing from it. Might be a few injuries from this game. Already one for GC with Bowes out
Phew, normal order resumes for Lachie…
Whitfield has decided to pick it up this quarter, but other news is Murdoch looks another potential out with a right foot injury. He has returned to the field, but looks like he might finish early.
Would prefer it happening to Giants players so Hately gets a chance
Toby Greene was with the doctor apparently checking in his ribs and back. Can confirm he was with the doctor but not 100% sure for the reason.
No real issue
Ugh. Come on, Kelly, carpe diem!
Coniglio’s having the game I expected you to have.
yeh
cogs named on the ball this week
must be over his niggles
Dammit Mumford…. I need you to *not* collapse in price before your bye.

Where the hell was Jezza Cameron in the second quarter?!
Not game related but – up to six St Kilda players, plus coach Richo, have fallen ill in Shanghai. Two additional emergencies are flying out of Melbourne tonight to join the squad.
No names as yet
?? Really
Billings, Savage, and McKenzie are the confirmed ones (although some reports are saying “up to six”); the extra emergencies are Ben Paton and Nick Hind.
Billings, Savage and McKenzie reportedly the players in doubt
Whitfield not scoring good…. whos tagging him
pearce off
ankle injury
cogs flat track’n the GC kids
Coniglio outscoring Whitfield by 100 points probably going to cost me a league win
i put the curse on whitfield ,
brought him in last week
Another rookie move. VC on Grundy C on Whitfield without realising all teams play at the same time. Whitfield tagged by Holman means SC score now fuked.
I feel your pain mate I did the same thing
Cog going big!!
Whitfield down after an massive late hit, carrying his right shoulder/collarbone. Can lift his arm so not looking horrible but will be something to follow through the week.
Greene out for the day on ice
Whitfield down into the rooms and receiving a sharp pain every time he lift his arm, but can lift it. Watch closely through the week.
Coniglio about to crack the double tonne for good news. on 194 when writing this
Everyone like fuck should’ve vice captain Cog
So close to 200!!!
What on earth, I’ve watched the game and Cogs has deserved to go large, but not 200+ large!
agreed – he didn’t outplay / outscore Kelly by 70 points … that’s for sure …
COG!!! IS ON 200
Cannot believe it! Traded Whitfield for Laird as soon as he copped that corky a few weeks back. Felt like a genius move when he missed two, not one. Then he comes back and scores close to his massive break even and I feel like a goose. With his low break even this week felt I had no choice but to trade him back in earlier than I was hoping for. Now he’s bloody injured again! He better not miss a week!
all the attention went to kelly
V a crap team , it was like his birthday
Is Whit injured??? please not
He came off, but it may have just been precautionary – the game was well and truly won. We’ll find out more later.
PLease not again….
Cogs & Kelly got 10 % of the allocated SC pts for that game
not bad over 44 players
SC relevant scores:
Coniglio – 206
Kelly – 133
Hopper – 127
Cameron – 109
Taranto – 72
Whitfield – 65
Greene – 60
Geez holding Matt over cogs bloody hurts
Was going cogs to Kelly at the start of the week
Ended up Moore to Kelly
Pretty happy with that one 😉
Never sideways trade premos they say!!!
