Game notes: The two expansion clubs have taken two contrasting paths in 2016. Plenty of negative attention has come the Suns’ way after Lethal Matthews had a crack at them stating that South East Queensland only had room for one AFL team. After a hot start to the season, the Suns have slipped out of the top 8 and seem to be struggling with injury again this year. Wholesale changes to the squad again this week signalling things are a little unsettled with the line up at the moment.

The Giants on the other hand are flying, with a club-record four straight wins to their name. Finals are looking more and more likely, especially if they can notch up another win today. The young midfielders in Shiel, Coniglio and Kelly are doing well under the leadership of Ward and Mumford in the middle.

The 6 Points

1. The Giants dominated the last time the sides played, winning the disposal count 384-305, the marks 121-79, having 10 more scoring shots and 16 more inside 50s. Devon Smith was best on ground with 27 disposals and four goals.

2. GWS has now won four consecutive matches – a new club record – and has kicked an average score of 132 points per game in that period, while holding its opposition to only 76 per game.

3. The Suns hold a narrow advantage in head-to-head contests with four wins from seven games, but GWS has won the last two.

4. Gold Coast is the worst clearance team in 2016 with 32 per game, while the Giants are ranked second at 41 per game.

5. The Suns travel to Spotless Stadium for the first time in round eight and they’ve yet to win a game in Sydney, losing twice previously to the Swans at the SCG.

6. Gold Coast star Tom Lynch has jumped 24 spots in the Schick AFL Players Ratings since the start of the year thanks to his brilliant early season form, and is now ranked number 34.

MJ’s Tip: GWS by 29 points.

  1. Gws to win this one by 40 points. Gold Coast have some soul searching to do. It isn’t just injuries hokding them back.

    1. I’m with you FT,
Just a lightning poll, after Goldy didn’t deliver with the VC
      GAJ for C – TU
      Ward for C – TD

  2. Opponent had Goldy as captain so I feel as though I can at least match his 100 with Ablett. Other options are Gawn and Priddis.

    1. It’s still Mummy for mine. For all the hype around the Giants this year, if Mumford goes down again then so do GWS.

  4. Hall Seems to be playing more half forward .

He might have a few niggles.

Or Rockets giving a few others time in the middle?

    Thoughts?

      1. He always seems to start off slow, then come home strong. Pity him & Dusty Martin did not look similar, they could swop in the changing rooms at half time!

  7. Ablett copped a heavy knock with about 20 seconds to go, took a long time to get up, not sure what the extent of any injury was

Game Chat – GWS v Gold Coast

Written by MJ on March 7 2015

We’ll get our first sightings of exciting youngsters Jack Martin, Sean Lemmens and Tom Nicholls for the Suns this season after not featuring in the first NAB Challenge win against Geelong. Mature aged recruit, Josh Glenn ($120k MID) will be handed his first Gold Coast jersey. He’s already had two seasons of SANFL experience and is a beautiful left foot kick by all accounts. Noted it will be tough to crack into the star-studded Suns midfield. Gary Ablett remains on the sidelines.

It will be particularly interesting to see the Giants’ midfield with Griffen and Ward re-united again from their Bulldog days. Midfielder/Forward, Jack Steele ($117k) gets his first look at AFL footy, as will Jake Barrett ($123k DEF) and Tom Downie ($123k RUCK). With so many young kids to be on break-out watch, this one promises to be a profitable one to tune in for if you’re a keen-eyed SuperCoach scout.

  1. Not a lot of interest here then? Pity, I was hoping someone watched the game and could give us some feedback on what happened with Zac Smith.

  2. Griffen slowly making his way into my team. Anyone thinking of Dangerfield, look at Griffen last year! That’s what you can expect. Bennell in and out of my team atm
