Game Chat – GWS v Richmond

Written by Father Dougal on July 14 2019

Where and when: MCG, Sunday July 14, 1.10pm AEST

What it means for Richmond: A vital top-six scalp. The Tigers are yet to beat a team that currently sits above them, and with the Giants’ patchy form both at the ‘G and overall, the time is ripe.

What it means for GWS: Arresting an alarming form slump. The Giants have had a poor two weeks, losing to Essendon and Brisbane, and a rare win at the MCG will set them up well.

The stat: Richmond may have lost its past two games to GWS, but it holds the edge at the MCG. The Tigers have beaten the Giants on all four occasions the sides have met in Melbourne, the last match coming in the 2017 preliminary final.

The match-up: Jeremy Cameron v David Astbury

Cameron had a day out and a half against an inexperienced Ryan Garthwaite last time these sides met, but Astbury will be tougher. The Giant is his club’s number one forward in the AFL Player Ratings (No.113 overall), with Astbury the Tigers’ third key back (No.314).

It’s a big week for: Dustin Martin

Martin was poor against GWS last time the two sides met, succumbing to the tagging pressure of Matt De Boer and getting suspended for striking. With De Boer injured on the sidelines, Martin will be relishing the opportunity to rebound and put in a dominant performance.

Father Dougal’s Tip: GWS by 3 points.

    1. Well I hope you didn’t as with Coniglios injury it looks like there is now a place in the midfield for Hately especially after being near BOG in the NEAFL yesterday

    1. Yep. Exactly, TR. We’ve [West Coast] been in way better form recently but I knew Collingwood would beat us the other night.

Top four sides can’t be losing 3 in a row.

    2. If you look at the teams that have beaten up on the bottom 8 the most, according to footywire.com, it’s tigers and the giants…

      Maybe neither are good teams?

  2. Last 5 rucks against Dogs:

    Stanley 105
    Lycett 165
    Grundy 174
    Kreuzer 119
    Vardy 86

Even Stanley and Vardy can score well against the Dogs. Wouldn’t expect less than 130 from Gawn, even on one leg.

  3. Need Whitfield to NOT smash his BE so I can get him next week. Now that I’ve said that, he’s gonna score 286.

  5. “He just finds a hole and finishes”. Really, Jason Dunstall? That’s the analysis you’re dishing out?

  6. So if Cogs finishes on zero it’s a donut cause he took the field?
Or does the emergency kick in?

      1. F*#k!!!
And I just got rid of J Kelly.
GWS have done me no favours this year.
To think I’m still planning to bring Whitfield back in 🙁

    1. I think he gets 2 X SFA. I was looking at Zac Bailey scoring history and he had -4 register! So logic says that the 0 is 4 better than that

  7. The Giants have been so conservative with injured players this year…and then they send one of their star players out like that.

Maybe they’re not conservative, just incompetent?

  8. Sometimes you should just go with your gut feelings.Allweek was thinking Conigs had late out written all over him.Waited till last minute to decide on benching him, alas did not.Was looking at 2500+ before this debacle!Hope he’s not too bad.

  9. Why is it that the week Coniglio scored over 200 just about every opponent had him and this week when he scores bugger all none of my opponents have him

    1. Unfortunately it would seem more midfield time for Greene now that Conoglio is out.
Disappointing considering we have a match up in one league this round AS.
I am anticipating Greene to ton ip

  10. Castagna is such a greedy little pig. Had Houli alone to his left, would have been an easy goal but no: he decides to go for a ridiculous snap with 2 GWS defenders on him.

    You’re not Tippa!

  11. I just can’t win a trick this year. Sitting just inside the eight in my cash league.

Lost four games by under 12 points, lost my matchup against the ladder leader by 7 points two weeks ago, because I had Gawn C when he went down and now I was cruising towards victory against the guy coming fourth and Cogs goes down, will cost me the win. FMSCL!!!!!

  12. Surely Houli deserves more than 53 SC for 18 touches? Those are some Matt Crouch numbers.

    1. Same with Captain Whitfield. However, mainly uncontested results in 20 points lower than say what Cripps would have.

      1. “Captain Whitfield”?! Wow, TR. That is ballsy with him coming off an injury.

Looked much better in the second quarter, think he can get to 120.

  14. Anyone ever notice that Dwayne Russell and Gerard Healy have the exact same voice? Indistinguishable, I swear.

    1. Strong rumours Dwayne will join his mate Hutch at Sen
Same management team that produce show for Dwayne and Gereard on 3AW

    1. Yep. Ave. 89 when Whitfield plays. May not be so significant now tho, with Kelly and Cogs now out.

Whitfield will be approx $537 800 with a BE OF 162 ish, after that lazy 96!

  16. Whitfield got smashed by Stack, went to the bench but the boundry rider comments girl just said he is right to come back on.

Hope he does. Being one down with Cogs is bad enough.

Giants are playing with a lot of heart.

Can’t believe I just said that.

    Wow, Hopper is down now.

    1. Think that goal seals it for you, GP. Don’t think the Giants will kick 6 unanswered goals in the last. Gg.

      1. Being a man down is going to make it really tough.

Losing a mid in the first minutes of the game is a bit of a death knell with the amount of running the modern teams do.

Giants had had a few of their young guys stand up and play well.

  17. Whitfield back on. My plan was to get him next week. Will definitely drop in price, which is nice, but his fragility is now starting to concern me.

  18. That’s all folks. Tigers by 27.

6 games at the MCG to come.

Giants have the pies next week. :S
