Game Chat – GWS v Richmond

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on March 8 2020

Where and when: Robertson Oval, Sunday 8 March, 12.40pm AEDT

Watchlist:

Lachlan ASH (GWS) DEF/MID @ $193,800

Looked very good last week rotating in defence, but GWS’ best were out and they sank the Swans by 100 points. Today should provide a clearer image.

Tom GREEN (GWS) MID @ $166,800

Faces a similar problem as Ash, but if he can hold his own with Kelly, Coniglio, Whitfield and Greene back he might be in line for a R1 debut.

Bachar HOULI (RICH) DEF @ $571,600

Interested to see how Short’s return will affect him. With Short sidelined in 2019, Houli cruised to a career best season with a monopoly on kick ins and half back distribution.

Dustin MARTIN (RICH) FWD/MID @ $543,000

For those who’ve backed him in at F2, it’ll be important to monitor his FWD to MID split and center bounce attendances so you know what you’re paying for.

Notable Absentees: Zac WILLIAMS (GWS), Callan WARD (GWS), Toby NANKERVIS (RICH).

  1. Tom Green not named in the GWS 22, looks like he’s unlikely to play round 1.
Ash named off a half back

    1. Giants may be looking at Cumming before Ash as first cab off the half back line. It’s a close call. Ash won’t be too far off.

    1. From the puff piece on the tigers website today from the practice match against werribee

      Nank
“The sight of Toby Nankervis bounding across the Punt Rd turf, sticking big tackles, clutching intercept marks, piercing left-foot passes into the corridor and setting up goals would have warmed the hearts of the Tiger Army.”

      Chol
“The tools were there for all to see, Chol’s supreme marking ability and springy leap, his effortless and economical running gait that allows him to glide across the turf as well as his slicing left boot.

Chol was also deadly in attack, bagging four majors.

After a successful stint at AFL level last year, “Marbs” has an added air of confidence about his standing in 2020 and looks set to further add to his game tally at senior level.”

  2. Hately and Green in a big tussle for a midfield berth. Both seem to be producing as well. So want Green to get it, but the Giants selection committee could do anything.

And with all the rookie issues, including the SHill quad “awareness”, seriously considering a bit of Zac Langdon ($218,300) action.

  3. Anyone else worried about Whitfield’s performance?

    F1 and D5 considerations:

    TU : Whitfield / Starcevich
    TD : Dusty / Ash

  4. Is both Houston and Roberton together in the backline a no-go due to the rd 11 bye for port and saints?

    1. Are you planning on keeping Roberton or upgrading him is the question?

Keeping both is probably an issue.

    2. You’ve got to keep in mind that you’ll have them to play through all 3 standard byes so I really think 1 is fine 2 might be pushing it.

      1. Trade Houston in after R11 and he still plays all the standard bye rounds and doesn’t miss any games … upgrade target for me.

  5. At around 350k difference Sauce is starting to ask some questions, thinking that we might be looking at 100-105 ave from the big guy as GWS sole ruck. Will lose 15-20 pts a game to Max but the extra 350 turns a rookie into a premo which which might amount to a 30-35pts difference. Thoughts?

    1. I dont think sauce is a chance to average more than 95 at 32 in April. Will certainly make some cash but will require a trade at some point to max which is a tough move.

      1. You think Max is going to average 150?

I’m not saying I’m going to do it, but it’s not right to dismiss it out of hand like that. $350K is an awful lot of cash, and is going to buy you a boatload of points on other lines if spent correctly.

        1. Have to agree with Joestar and Chillo on this one. Today’s evidence suggests 35pts diff max.
$350k spent wisely should be 65-70pts with so much value around on other lines. Ignoring the C points lost obviously, but with so few decent rookies around, I’m currently planning for no more then 4 rookies onfield. Hopefully 3. It’ll ruin your season if you have more the way things are going.

Am not gonna make a prediction now but will before the season starts. Currently looks like there’ll be more players between $210-400k than < $200k who will make more than $130k. By simple maths, that mean they’ll give you more ONFIELD pts too. You’ll also be able to upgrade earlier and need less trades to do it.

It’s actually been very close the last two years, but this year I reckon I’ll be willing to put my season on it come Rd1 teams being dropped.

        2. Coaches who don’t want GG are going Grundy + {insert ruck name}. Not many thinking Gawn + {insert ruck name}. Personally I think you are crazy not to have both. BUT if you must leave one out then don’t be blinkered in thinking Gawn is the one to leave out.

          1. I did think that, but despite Gawn coming back from injury I changed today.

Grundy will come good, but honestly looks less there yet than Gawn does.

    1. No real competition for Sauce today, but he doesn’t in Rd1 either! Will be looking at his fixture for a nice run of 3 games v poorer RUC oppo for a decent price boost (and points). Definitely worth a look as will alleviate the f’all rookie situation.
HULC loves Cumming (no pun intended) so would put him ahead of Ash after today.
Reckon Cumming will get the nod if Zill will be spending a bit of time up the ground. So hard to tell with GWS?!
ZacLangdon has surely earned his spot. Just worry that a bad game and Daniels or Lloyd (whoever misses) will be given a run.

Moral of the story for me … will only pick GWS rookies if the cupboard is bare. Too much talent around for JS to be good. We all saw what happened to Hately last year; GWS are happy to give their kids time to develop (in the NEAFL).

If Zill is good for Rd1, I’ll go with the one of Cumming or Ash who’s picked. If Green and Hately are BOTH named, I’ll probably go Green, otherwise neither.

Not worried about Kelly and/or Whitfield just yet. Both appeared to be strolling.

      Thoughts?!

  7. Personally I’ve had Jacobs from the get go, he stated it’s the best his ever felt in his career and the way his moving around the ground shows it. His disposals are just a bonus. Where it really counts is his ruck work and with the best midfield in the comp around him he will be able to get a solid average off taps alone. Has allowed me to balance the team out and I’ll be happy if he even averages 85-90 because it’s looking unlikely that many rookies at all are even gonna get a game let alone average close to the 60-70 mark. I think either option is a good one and it’s each to there own! All the best lads

    1. He was one of the ruckman worst hit when they went to scoring HOs to HOTA , the GWS mids will help a bit I guess?

I think expecting anything more than a 95 average is kind of crazy.

    1. Looked great. If the volume of rookies aren’t there, then he, Walsh, Dyson, McCluggage etc. etc. have to come into the equation for balance, but midprice MIDs should be approached with extreme caution.

    2. Played a great game and I reckon he is the first choice for Taranto’s spot. But I thought he would have been excellent last year too 🙁

Who really knows what Leon will do. He has so many options in that squad that we’ll just have to wait and see.

    3. Hately is good but just another gws midfield clone. They really could do with a big bodied midfielder such as Green. Some of his possessions while getting tackled and hit were impressive for a rookie.

      1. Caldwell is waiting in the wings as well. Both Hately and Caldwell out of contract at the end of the season. They’ve got a lot to play for, if they get games.

    1. Greene has been on fire this preseason (which we haven’t really seen)

Biggest problem with Greene is erm… Greene

      He’s a huge risk.

Must live in a house with no knives or scissors

      1. Greene has looked incredible in the Marsh series and will get more time in the midfield with Taranto and Ward missing. He did have to kick five majors to get that score though and he won’t do that very often, so I’m using that to comfort me for ignoring him again
