Game Chat – GWS v Sydney

Written by Motts on March 22 2015

A near-full-strength Swans side landed in Canberra yesterday, including gun forward Lance Franklin, for their final pre-season hitout against GWS at Manuka Oval today.

Bird said the Swans were treating it like a home-and-away game, as they look to atone for last year’s grand final defeat.

“We’ll be going as hard as we can and getting good form for round one”, he said.

Bird was expecting GWS to follow Gold Coast’s 2014 climb up the ladder.

“They’ve got a good midfield now and have brought in blokes like Griffen … they’ve got some talented guys in there,” he said.

“I think that’s one of the strongest parts of their team.

“I think they’ll be pushing for finals this year, I think they’ll have a pretty good year.”

Bird said Franklin would be using Manuka to try  to rekindle his  form of 2014, where he finished second in the Brownlow Medal and won the Coleman.

“The big dog’s here, he played some game time last week, but I think he’ll pretty much play a full game this week,” Bird said.

“(He’s) just building his fitness for round one and hopefully he’ll have a good hit out tomorrow and get some good form.”

The Giants have named eight huge inclusions in the squad to face the Swans in the club’s final pre-season game at StarTrack Oval in Canberra on Sunday.

Co-captain Callan Ward, midfield stars Ryan Griffen, Dylan Shiel and Josh Kelly, exciting forward Will Hoskin-Elliott and key defenders Joel Patfull and Nick Haynes have all been named.

  1. Got my eye on Buddy,Heeney,JPK,and Mitchell . Right now I’ve got Mitchell and swan in that F3 and F4 position. But Buddy could replace one of em and after last night Bonts is also another I’m considering.

  2. Mitchell coming off subs bench = bad.
    Mitchell playing well = good.

Still not sure what he will be doing come round 1.

  3. Was at the game, saw Buddy poleaxed only a few metres away. Didn’t look good, hopefully he’s OK for round 1 but he’s going to have a headache.
A few random observations: Parker and Kennedy were both in beast mode again. Pretty sure Gary Rohan did something bad to somebody in a previous life. GWS have got a LOT of firepower in the midfield, and if they all stay together then look out. I can’t believe Isaac Heeney only just finished high school. Jeremy Cameron might be a good smoky for the Coleman this year. Not sure Mummy is SC relevant this year.
