Game Chat – GWS vs Western Bulldogs

Written by Thommo on April 28 2017

Venue: UNSW Oval at 7:50pm AEST

LAST FIVE MEETINGS

1PF, 2016, Western Bulldogs 13.11 (89) d GWS 12.11 (83) at Spotless Stadium
R9, 2016, GWS 15.8 (98) d Western Bulldogs 10.13 (73) at Spotless Stadium
R9, 2015, Western Bulldogs 16.17 (113) d GWS 11.2 (68) at Etihad Stadium
R23, 2014, GWS 18.7 (115) d Western Bulldogs 15.19 (109) at Etihad Stadium
R4, 2014, Western Bulldogs 17.8 (110) d GWS 12.11 (83) at UNSW Canberra Oval

Game notes: The rematch of last year’s epic preliminary final at Spotless Stadium has been given the big stage of Friday night footy, just reward for two of this season’s flag favourites. The Giants head to Canberra with more momentum than the Bulldogs after winning their past four games, and they’re playing a far more consistent brand of footy than the premiers, who have had to fight extremely hard for their wins. GWS forwards Toby Greene (17 goals) and Jeremy Cameron (16) have started the year brilliantly, with Steve Johnson, Jonathon Patton, Rory Lobb and Devon Smith adding even more firepower, and if Dylan Shiel, Tom Scully, Callan Ward and Josh Kelly get too much room to move in the midfield, the Giants will be tough to beat. Their battle with Marcus Bontempelli, Luke Dahlhaus, Tom Liberatore and Jack Macrae will be a beauty.

Thommo’s Tip: Giants by 20 points.

  1. Just heading out to Manuka now. It’s still a balmy 10 degrees here, perfect weather for footy!
Enjoy the game everyone, should be a ripsnorter

  2. Eagle/Assassins/Webspyda,
I think we were pretty fair in giving you plenty of chances over the past few weeks. From now on, I’m just deleting your comments. And I’m quite sure there won’t be too many objections. Try another Forum, Champ………

  3. Went the double downgrade for the dollarydoos over Jezza “lankyPOD” Cameron. He’d better make like Canberra and chill

  4. What is with BT’s fascination with the umpires. 30 seconds in and he was already distracted by a boundary umps apparently peculiar throwing technique. BT drives me nuts.

    1. I hate listening to him. Reminds me of the cricket – turn the sound off and listen to the radio commentary.

      1. Yeah, but then you get the commentary a couple of seconds ahead of the vision. Not the end of the world, but it can be annoying.

  5. Hate to be a broken record. But 7-4 already?

The most favoured team for frees versus the probably least favoured.

Hopefully it doesn’t impact the outcome.

      1. Official AFL one. Which is currently 16-10 doggies way.

BT is a tool but I understand his fascination with the umpires at present.

  6. Quarter time Shaw has 27 points for 4 kicks, 1 mark, 1 free kick (paid against Macrae for a throw).
Assuming that a free kick = 1 point and a mark = 3 points, that means Shaw has 23 points for 4 kicks.
5.75 points per kick is a good return on investment!

    1. Another 3 goals please, Jeremy!

Cracking game. Twice I’ve written the dogs off in this game, only for them to come smashing back into it.

GWS can’t get their outside run going as they don’t seem to have anyone winning in the middle. Ward slightly injured as well as Mummy.

I’m looking forward to a special second half!

  8. I have been a bit tough on Tom Boyd this year, and I have the ruck E on him tonight
but I think he has done a lot better than 28 points to half time. Anyway what do I know!

  9. Cameron having another blinder. May have to reconsider my perception of Tom Lynch as the best big forward in the League.

      1. Doubt it will be low impact with the bloke he hit leaving the ground due to the blood rule. They also hate hits to the head.

    1. Before the gane they had the predictions of the panel, can’t remember which one but they said 3 3 3 for Greene. 3 goals, 3 something else and 3 weeks suspension saying he’s been on edge and ready to snap. May have very well nailed it.

  11. Got the VC on Bont. Don’t want to mozz it but could be the first time my VC choice has worked out this year….
I think Greene will get 1 week.
Absolutely cracking game. 2 quality teams.

  12. Jack McRae has his head taken off in the last minute! Could have had a shot, would’ve been worth shitloads if he kicked it!
Happy I hung on to Taranto. JJ needs to pull his finger out for me, 60 at HT, 70 at FT….

  13. Great game 2 sides that will b up there at the business end of the season. 4 all the talk about the umpires favouring the bulldogs I thought GWS got all the breaks in that last qtr. Plus I love BT as a caller he cracks me up and makes the game more exciting. Not popular on this site though.

    1. Hi Oliver. Glad to see you are allowed to stay up late because if you like BT as a caller you must be about ten years old. That seems to be the target audience his childish comments are aimed at.

      1. BT cracks me up when he goes NaRNArS!

I mean ahem, yeah nah yeah mate bring back the good old callers who all used to sound like a sterile Sandy Roberts with a peg on his nose from the 1800’s. Bloke stuff ya know? Kickin’ a footy ain’t a game mate it’s SERIOUS STUFF!

Boy oh boy I’ve lost it, Richo!

    2. Still ended up 26-18 in favour of the dogs. Yes time and location are factors, but it’s still close to 50% more free kicks to the doggies no matter how you slice it.

      1. Good question Brad. I guess CD had to deduct points to give to darlings Shaw & Bont.
        * note I have both so not unhappy but CD never fails to confuse

        1. Bont had a good game , some clutch goals and plenty of contested , but was he really thirty points better than bulldogs next player ?

      2. I just checked I hadn’t made an error but that score is correct. He is listed as having 4 clangers so I’m guessing he committed those late in the game.

Could be worse, you could have Toby Greene!

    1. Thanks for the score updates once again Thommo. Fantastic match! Taranto finally paying off, and I’m finally paying attention to loophole properly!

      1. No worries Fi. You did better than me, I didn’t notice Taranto was just getting rested last week so I traded him out. Then I forgot to set up my loophole tonight…

        D’oh!

        1. Bont is the new Pendles. No matter what he does you are guaranteed a motza.

3 goals 22 possesions is a good game. But is it really worth 136?

Players get 36, 38 possessions every week and struggle to score a ton.

  15. It is hard to follow scoring at times , heater had 24 mid strength possessions but scores well ! Haynes seemed far more prominent to me .Dont have either player
so not relevant to my scores.

    1. Cracking game of football.. I thought Shaw had a decent game, but did not warrant a 111 pointer in my opinion..

  16. I was pretty pumped for this game, and I’m happy to report that it exceeded all expectatations. We’ve had some absolutely bludging games of footy here in past years, but this was a cracker!
I was sitting right behind Greene and Patton for their final quarter goals, both brilliant. Also had a great view of Greene belting Caleb Daniel – Tobes is a worm and hopefully they throw the book at him.
To those responsible for the Dogs banner taking a cheap shot at my home town – ain’t karma a bitch? Now bugger off back to Footscray, you clowns.
Final thoughts: Bont was amazing, Heater was pretty good, and Tom Scully is a machine.
