Game Chat – Haw v Geel

Written by MJ on April 6 2015

The Hawks begin their quest for a three peat against the Cats today at the MCG. Hawthorn will be looking to be the sixth team in VFL/AFL history to complete back to back to back flags, but their 2015 campaign faces a tough challenge first up. Although the Hawks dismantled Geelong in the second qualifying final last season by over five goals, this is a different Cats outfit. Mitch Clark looks like a legitimate second threat deep, and Tom Hawkins appears to be poised for a monstrous season. Nakia Cockatoo and Cory Gregson will make their debuts in the clash, and Jimmy Bartel will return to the midfield, where he won a Brownlow in 2007.

Make no mistake, until proven otherwise, Hawthorn are the best team in the league. Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis love playing against the Cats in recent times, they combined for 53 possessions and three goals in the qualifying final win. Mitchell is particularly vital to Hawthorn’s forward thrusts, he is instrumental off half back where Alistair Clarkson often deploys him. Although last night’s game between Fremantle and Port Adelaide was a gargantuan struggle, this contest should be the match of the round. Kick off is 3.20pm (AEST).

Justin’s tip: Hawkins and Clark will be too much. Cats by 8 points.

  1. Off topic but what is looking to be a good score this round? Lots of up and downs so how is everyone fairing with it all and what are your scores?

  2. Lake to hold Hawkins to a couple, Gibbo/Stratton to tag team Mitch Clark into frustrating turmoil……Roughy, Bruest & Gunstan to kick 8 between them, Hawks by 23 points.

  3. Chonks I am in the same boat. However I have traded Anderson to J. Cowan 123k cats to loophole Vandenbergs score. A Geelong player to loophole for 3 or 4 weeks with cats playing Sunday games whilst playing rookies will be handy.
With 3 on the bench in the midfield I think it is ok. Next week you can put the Em on Cripps and loophole if he does well or just not take his score.

  4. Reckon we just had an earthquake here in Kalgoorlie…

Very much looking forward to watching the Geelong forward line today… see if Clark or Hawkins can’t pull a Tex and dominate today.

  6. Gee i know its already been said during the nab cup, but cockatoo looks a player. A tad off the pace against the reigning premier today, but he will be beat up on weaker teams this year

  10. Must say I cant stand watching Hawks play at the moment. I know they are the best and deserve to be but there is something very boring about watching them play, Kind of like watching Pete Sampras in the 90s.

  12. As a cats fan, getting sick of smedts. I know he was only a late inclusion but makes no impact. Cockatoo will be great if he can maintain a bit of ball control but nerves and inexperience got the better of him. Hawks looking very good for that premiership cup

  13. Mitch Clark got me to 2186. I’ll take that for Round One, I think there’s gonna be some big scores though with the teams that have Walker, B.Smith, Docherty etc.
