Game Chat – Hawthorn v Port

Written by Motts on May 25 2019

Where and when: University of Tasmania Stadium, Saturday 25 May, 1.45pm AEST

Last time they met: University of Tasmania Stadium, round 11, 2018: Hawthorn 9.10 (64) defeated Port Adelaide 9.7 (61)

Port Adelaide used the wind to surge into a four-goal lead at quarter time, only to be quickly pegged back by the hosts. In a low-scoring clash, Hawthorn eventually overcame its plucky opponents. Tom Mitchell claimed the Brownlow votes with 28 disposals and two goals.

What it means for Hawthorn: After a superb win over the Giants and a competitive performance against the Tigers, the Hawks might be better than the ‘middle of the road’ team Alastair Clarkson thinks they are. It’s time to prove that against the Power.

What it means for Port Adelaide: Already a game and a significant percentage gap ahead of the Hawks, a win here would really shore up the Power’s spot inside the top eight. Given the Hawks are likely to be a main rival for a finals spot, victory on the road would be sweet.

How Hawthorn wins: By slowing the tempo of the game down, getting the match on their terms and then – crucially – by using the knowledge of playing in Launceston to their advantage.

How Port Adelaide wins: By overwhelming the Hawks in the ruck. With in-form big man Ben McEvoy under a cloud, there’s a real opportunity for Port Adelaide’s twin towers to gain a significant aerial advantage.

The stat: Hawthorn’s record in Launceston is fantastic, winning 25 of its last 28 games there.

The match-up: Jaeger O’Meara v Travis Boak

Both are the experienced heads among younger teammates in their respective midfield groups. O’Meara appears at the top of his game, while Boak is enjoying a superb resurgence after he was pushed back into the centre this season.

It’s a big week for: Jonathon Ceglar

Port Adelaide has employed a dual ruck set-up for much of the year, rotating Scott Lycett and Paddy Ryder through the middle. Meanwhile, Ceglar might have to do it all himself with the Hawks sweating on scans for in-form big man Ben McEvoy. It’s an imposing task.

Big call: Luke Breust overwhelms Port Adelaide’s reliable backline to kick five goals.

Mottsy’s Tip: Hawthorn by 30 points

  1. Drew and Constable for Young and Boak? Am 3k short of getting Whitfield instead of Boak. (Boak would give me my 5th premium fwd)

    TU – Sounds good
TD – Maybe just Drew to Young to avoid a 0

    Cheers

    1. Same issue sal. Aaaaarghhhh

Except deciding between a keeper I am not sold on in Marshal
Or going rookie and bringing in young who scored 69 from 8 touches and has only played 1 game.
Looks like Marshals got himself a gig.

Think the real question is, is it worth bringing in Marshal this week or wait cop a donut and get someone I rate for under 500k later on

    2. Ultimately I went with Marshall, because I think he’s much better value for money, and I could use that extra $144K elsewhere.

You watch, he’ll get dropped next week!

  3. I had a similar issue.

After trading ROB to lloyd, I was still looking at a donut in the Mids.

I decided on Balta and change,I like his new role, he has a great Bye as a forward, and could make $100K+ by R 14 and be traded straight swap to a F6 / Ruck cover.

I can still go Young on the Bubble next week to.

  5. Why must you tease me Worpel? Too many times have I been over the moon at a score like this at quarter time only for you to finish in the low 80’s.

  8. Why is it every time scrimshaw looks like hes gonna put in a good score he goes off injured. FFS!

    1. I know. He could’ve had an 80 plus average if he’d only play more than a half of footy each week. So frustrating!!!

  9. Clearly, Duursma took offence to Father Dougal’s assessment of him being “Quite done” and “likely to go backwards”. Go you good thing!

  10. Rocky done for the day with a hammy too. Hopefully he gets up next week, it doesn’t look too serious.

  11. Sicily will be c. $502k with a BE of about 133 next week.
Should be perfect for a post-R12 bye pick-up if you fancy him for Top6 DEFs from here??

        1. I’m on the fence. Erring against the idea, but I see there are a few looking at him. So worth giving the figures.

          1. yeah mate not questioning the figures … data is always good!, but given his role, he’s not a target – if he plays midfield, then no worries … Port just too many midefielders to choose from …
