Game Chat – Hawthorn vs St Kilda

Written by Thommo on April 29 2017

Venue: Uni of Tasmania Oval, Launceston at 1:45pm AEST

LAST FIVE TIMES
R4, 2016, Hawthorn 13.9 (87) d St Kilda 13.6 (84) at University of Tasmania Stadium
R10, 2015, Hawthorn 20.12 (132) d St Kilda 10.9 (69) at Etihad Stadium
R7, 2014, Hawthorn 27.13 (175) d St Kilda 4.6 (30) at the MCG
R20, 2013, Hawthorn 14.18 (102) d St Kilda 7.14 (56) at Etihad Stadium
R6, 2012, Hawthorn 18.15 (123) d St Kilda 13.10 (88) at the MCG

Game notes: The Saints narrowly missed last year’s finals and a contributing factor was a three-point loss to the Hawks in the corresponding fixture when they were the better team on the day. That was about as poorly as the Hawks have played at their Tasmanian fortress for quite some time. They’ve won 19 straight games in Launceston and their thumping win over West Coast on Sunday suggests they’ve found their mojo once more after a bleak opening to the season. Hawthorn’s backline is starting to click and the Saints don’t appear to have the weapons to hurt the Hawks on the spread. This promises to be a beauty – close and tight throughout – but it is a crunch game for finals aspirant St Kilda who at 2-3 face the prospect of falling just off the pace.

Thommo’s Tip: Heart says Hawks by 12 points, head says Saints by 12 points!

  2. Something in my gut has made me pass on Balic and go for Hardwick instead. Don’t let me down fella.

Also, no longer have JOM and Roughy so I’ll be interested in their scores to see if I pulled the right moves over the last couple of weeks.

    1. I have him as well, although I will probably bring in Balic too. Since I had Fisher from last week I could get Hardwick without having to pass on Fisher or Balic. I’m hoping he ends up being a happy differential.

  4. Was thinking PP-Balic JOM-Bont. Held off to see if PP and JOM could return to a bit of form and went picket-balic. Well bont went massive and JOM is 1 at quarter time. Brilliant

  6. Hardwick looking like a good call for those who went that way. My POD mid Tmitch doing what tmitch does at half time. Went Fisher over Balic and Hardwick myself which isn’t looking great at the moment.
Roberton almost looking like a must have in def! Picked him with my last round pick in a draft league I’m in, but haven’t had the kahunes to bring him into classic yet.

    1. With Carlisle coming back, I had Roberton bouncing back to 2015 form (Avg 91). Didn’t think he would be this relevant. Guess with Montagna ageing as well he’s being given more responsibility as the next generation.

Picked him up in draft too and loving it.

  8. Wow! Hawks were obliterated that quarter. Watching some of the game and they look devoid of endeavour, skills, teamwork, willingness to work for each other. Unbelievable shift in that team.
Hard to judge the saints because they look like they are playing witches hats.

But maybe the biggest question of this game is what is going on with Jack Stevens hair??? Looks like he is sporting the derm 80’s perm mullet
