Game Chat – Melb v Suns

Written by MJ on April 4 2015

Gary Ablett will play his first game in over 250 days as the Gold Coast Suns head to the MCG to start their 2015 season against the Melbourne Demons. The last time these two sides met, the Suns were victorious by eight points (86-78) and Ablett amassed 32 disposals. The Suns were in the eight for much of last season until the bald magician went down with a shoulder injury, which resulted in Gold Coast losing six of their last seven games. Rodney Eade; who assumed Guy McKenna’s position after he was sacked following the Suns late season fade out, will be expecting his men to push for an inaugural finals berth this season.

The Demons will blood Jesse Hogan in today’s clash. The number two pick in the 2012 mini-draft will make his long awaited debut after battling several injuries over the past two years. The 195cm key position forward has been touted as the next big thing and is a must in any supercoach side. Today’s contest also marks Heritier Lumumba’s 200th game and his first with Melbourne after he was traded to the Demons in the off season. Although these teams were relatively even in their last encounter, expect the cream to rise to the top for the Suns under the command of seasoned veteran Rodney Eade. The Suns have also won their last three games against Melbourne. Kick off is at 1.40pm (AEST).

Justin’s tip: Gold Coast by 35 points.

  2. Good overview of the game Justin. The D’s must be having nightmares about Ablett being back. He always seems to dominate against them. Will be interesting also to see how Hogan goes. Keep up the good work Warey.

  3. I have changed my team a million times in the last hour.
I now have Ablett, Bellchambers and Swan in my team at the expense of Sloane, Bartel and Salem.
    Good moves?

  4. Is Newton a safe option on-field? Hard to know who to start from Newton, Heeney, CEY, Miller and Vanderberg. Nervous after Cripps struggled!

  5. I’ve gone for vandenBerg, based on nothing other than he’s a hard nut and it’s probably going to be a scrap.
Then again, I passed on Ablett….

  6. My plan is to see how Ablett fares today. If he smashes it, I’m keeping 150k ish in the bank to upgrade straight away next week. If he doesn’t, I’m using the cash to upgrade Oxley/Brown – B. Goodes.

V’berg and Salem on the field for me for this one. Miller and Saad my emergencies. C’mon fellas!

  8. Made a last minute switch when i saw Vandenberg avoided the green vest. Vandenberg in, Anderson out. Really worried about Anderson’s potential to get the vest.

Means I’ve got Lumumba, Salem, Clark, Vandenberg from the Dees and Bennell, Saad from GC. Lots of interest in this game.

Not having GAJ is mighty stressful I tell ya.

  9. Salem having a shocker. Watching closely he seems to be disinterested. Lacks that punch that we saw in the NAB. Hope he improves in the second half.

  10. This is looking like a pretty average prediction on my part. Truly shocked by how poor Gold Coast were in that first half. This is their fifth season, it’s time they started putting it together on the field.

  12. Loving VandenBerg …. hating that he is sitting on my bench … and without the ‘E’.

Note to self: “must remember, play rookies that start on field”!!!

OK, self pity over, now pray for Heeney and CEY to both start and have huge games!!!

  16. Very happy starting Vandenberg & Saad on the ground……..they both didn’t look out of place & look to be quality 1st year players.

  17. Guys, sure some of you are having this debate too, but take Saad’s score today via loophole? Would put Goodes on bench and put Hamling on the field.

    Thoughts?

  18. Happy with VanderBerg. Also have GAJ. Impressed with his 119 but how in the world do they work out his points? I think I’m very lucky picking him now.

  19. I think I’m the only one here who backed in Jeffy Garlett. Ha ha! Have had him locked in at F4 for about 3 weeks now and safe to say it was a bold move… Pays off so far with 121 points! Ablett 238 as captain not as bad as it could’ve been.

Vandenberg and Saad both on the bench… But happy with some money making scores. Touk Miller on the other hand…

Lumumba 70 is ok seeing as he barely touched the thing in the second half.

  20. I didn’t start with Ablett so I may sound biased, but how the hell did he finish with 119? From what I heard on the radio his influence seemed very limited with the exception of 2 last quarter goals. Almost doubled his DT score.

Anyway from what I’m hearing I’m still comfortable with my decision. He sounds as though he’s not anywhere near 100%. That is provided the SC scorers don’t just punch in 100 + points regardless of his performance.
