Game Chat – Melbourne v Sydney

Written by Motts on April 11 2019

Where and when: SCG, Thursday April 11, 7.20pm AEST

Last time they met: SCG, round 21, 2018: Sydney 13.9 (87) defeated Melbourne 10.18 (78)

The visitors got home in a thrilling contest thanks to some outstanding work behind the ball from Isaac Heeney, who was awarded the three Brownlow votes and dragged in what was later judged to be the mark of the year. It was also a horrible day for Alex Johnson, who suffered another ACL tear in what turned out to be his last game in the AFL.

What it means for Sydney: A win over Carlton was a much-needed one and the home side must continue to build some momentum against the under-fire Dees, especially after dropping their first home game to Adelaide.

What it means for Melbourne: Tipped as premiership contenders before the season, the Demons have looked anything but and a fourth-straight loss would just about put a line through their season.

How Sydney wins: With youngsters Heeney and Zak Jones finding form alongside Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker, the Swans midfield looks far more balanced. The Demons onballers struggling, so Sydney should be able to restrict the visitors’ scoring opportunities.

How Melbourne wins: Players like Jack Viney, Max Gawn, Christian Petracca and Nathan Jones led the Demons revival last season and must do it again by getting back to their brand of hard-nosed footy.

The stat: The Dees are ranked third in the competition with an average of 60.3 inside 50s per game, compared to Sydney (52) who are 13th, but they can’t turn that advantage into a winning score.

The match-up: Callum Sinclair v Max Gawn

The star Demon will have the advantage with his ruck work, but the Swan is more mobile and will push forward as hard and as often as he can to make Gawn accountable. If Sinclair can kick a couple of goals and break even around the ground, he’ll be extremely influential for his team.

It’s a big week for: Zak Jones (Sydney)

The younger brother of the Melbourne co-captain announced himself with a career-high 31 possessions and seven clearances against Carlton last week. With his speed and willingness to carry the footy, and the Dees likely to focus on Zak’s high-profile teammates, he could be a dangerous weapon for Sydney.

Big call: After a solid start to the season, Parker will assert himself on this contest, especially forward, and be a match-winner with four goals.

Prediction: Sydney by 25 points

      1. Lloyd -supercoach gun in general, no McVeigh, Melbourne have a very high forward 50 entry rate, but they just bang it in.
Hoping a couple more intercept marks, a lot more general kick/marks. And kick outs. A lot of upside to take a risk on seeing he’s already averaging 120+.

  1. LATE CHANGES
    Sydney: Nil
Melbourne: Neville Jetta (knee) and Jay Lockhart (back) replaced in selected side by Marty Hore and Charlie Spargo

    FINAL INTERCHANGES
Sydney: Jackson Thurlow, Kieren Jack, Nick Blakey, Justin McInerney
Melbourne: James Harmes, Sam Wiedeman, Corey Wagner, Josh Wagner

  2. Have 30 trades left and am thinking of trading Fyfe to Lloyd. Players in the past such as Stef martin, Wingard, parker, Merrett, J Lloyd and B Smith etc. have scored poorly after concussion. This would also allow me to field butter each week instead of clark/scrimshaw

    TU: Trade Fyfe to Lloyd
    TD: Hold the trade

  3. Preuss up and about, taking hit-outs, getting amongst it- all the while Gawn is on the bench.

    This is what I feared…

    1. Preuss predominantly forward and kicked two goals. Gawn still at 93%TOG and has 25 pts to qtr time. No need for panic yet…….

  4. Fark. Can’t believe what I’ve just done.

Was playing around with Fyfe-Lloyd before the game before reversing and quickly putting the E on Hore just in case. In placing the E on Hore, it took the E off Gawn on my ruck bench. I therefore have Bines on field with no E at R3.

    Yes, I am an idiot.

What the hell do I do? For now I’ve put the Hoff into R2 and Bines on to my FWD bench. But I was planning on trading Hoff to Kelly/Boak.

TU – save a donut this week and keep Hoff (and have to keep Hoff given predicted price drop)

TD – cop the donut this week and stick to trading Hoff to Kelly/Boak for long term

    1. If you’re willing to put aside the issue of price movements, you can look at it from a points-this-week perspective:

The first option gives you Westhoff’s score, plus the score from whatever rookie you field as a result of having sent him into the ruck.

The second option gives you Kelly or Boak’s score, and nothing else.

The question then becomes ‘will Kelly or Boak outscore Westhoff + a rookie?’.

      1. That’s definitely a simple way of looking at things. Thanks Salamander.

So Westhoff and Setterfield scored a grand total of 76 between them last week.

Boak and Kelly went 105+ each.

        Food for thought…

Who will score more this week?

TU – Westhoff and Setterfield combined
TD – one of Kelly or Boak only

  5. Oliver has the clamps on big time. Hewett is a gun tagger and a fair tagger. No niggle, just pressure. I’m a fan.

    1. Had 1 disposal in the 1st quarter, 11 in the next. He’s been a slow starter this year but with a little motivation and a close game he hopefully can reach the ton.

  7. Heeney was running before half time. Was going to come on . Hope he is ok and plays second half. Oliver Florent is also finding plenty of the ball tonight unlike the other Oliver

  8. Should’ve been cynical with champion data and started Lloyd over laird. The guy just racks them up

Looking at his stats he’s had five tackles for the season and barely ten percent of his touches are contested. Yet he is top five in SC. All his points are in marks, DE% and rebound fifties I spose

Unfortunately only had Oliver and gawn tonight with Oliver VC. Looks like cripps C for me!

      1. Not in that last-term he wasn’t … straight down the fillet of a Demon, twice in successive kicks. With the game on the line and Gawn taking one of those intercepts (maybe both), I can’t see why he wouldn’t lose significant points and Gawn take them?!? CD gives me the sh1ts. As does not having Lloyd (the chosen one).

  9. Dammit Hore i put you on the bench i didn’t know you were playing i could’ve put you on the field and put Duursma on the bench

    2

    1. If Scrimshaw isn’t named or Duursma’s a late out, potential loophole?!? If you had the E on him.
      I’m hoping.
Same applies with Bailey Scott? Constable into Butters?!
SC is fast becoming a full-time job. Am having to set multiple alarms just to check!?! 🙁

  10. Damn you, Oliver. With Heeney, Lloyd and Gawn, I could be off to the flyer but NO- you’ve decided to screw me.

  11. CD scoring is a joke. Multiple intercept marks by Gawn in the final quarter and hardly any points for it. Oliver should be on 100+

    1. totally agree, watched gawns score only go up 10 after 3 intercept marks (1 contested) and all disposals from those marks were kicks at 100% disposal efficiency, CD really confusing all of us this year.

  12. Part of me blames myself for picking Oliver knowing he had limited pre season.
Another part of me is annoyed at his mediocrity after showing great scores in JLT and then a 140 against Geelong. His use of the ball has been terrible. 8 Clangers killed him again tonight.
The things i could of done by picking Libba over him! Hindsight ….

    1. Oliver has been very untidy tonite. On top of the clangers he has given away cheap free kicks…He was not tagged second half and didnt really lift. I am also kicking myself picking him instead of Neale.

  13. He did more than lloyd , what a joke , contested possession differential ridiculous. You know what sc can get stuffed.go and get stuffed lloyd , absolute joke, did i say get stuffed lloyd what a joke. Well it is a joke , what a joke , did i say what a joke one more time what a joke.

    1. I disagree. Lloyd is just a smart user of the ball. And he puts himself in position where it is easy to find him and the swans love the ball in his hands. Besides he plays in defence and his role doesnt involve contested footy, thats not his fault.

      5

      8
      1. Have to agree with Bruce – his possessions rarely contribute positively towards Sydney’s possessions – rarely any contested footy or hard ball gets or tackles – often kicks / handballs sideways or backwards … which rarely is to the team benefit …

That aside, based purely on SC scoring, he is a must have … sadly, not the best option though for the actual game in real life!

    1. I only saw a bit of the game but I didn’t see Oliver hit a target more than once or twice. Should have had a HUGE clanger count tonight!

      8

      1
      1. 8 clangers which is the 3rd time he has recorded 8 or more since 2017. Also 27/48 matches since 2017 recording 30+ disposals with only 3 below 100 with tonight the only time he has scored less than 98.

  14. I’ve got Oliver too. I think that’s the worst game I have ever seen him play. And I watch him a lot.
I think it’s a positive for his owners that his worst game has just gone and he still scored 87. He’ll improve and his ceiling is massive. Don’t lose faith.
If you haven’t got him, I’d be looking to pick him up in a week or two if you can afford it with this score running through his price.

    1. Yeah, I’m about 90% sure he’s going to be my first midfield upgrade in about 3 weeks – priced around 550k. It’ll make up for Yeo’s drop.

    2. nah mate, I reckon he looked just as bad in round 1 … he’s not right yet … and would have thought he can handle the tag better (may be wrong – he may never have been tagged last year?) – remember he scored only 71 in round 1 … will be interesting to see whether or not he bounces back ..
