Game Chat – Melbourne v Sydney

Written by Motts on August 16 2019

Where and when: MCG, Friday August 16, 7.50pm AEST

What it means for Melbourne: A chance to measure itself against a team in a similar situation and a team that it has already beaten this season. The wooden spoon is still a mathematical possibility for the Demons, although highly unlikely.

What it means for Sydney: The Swans can’t go any higher than 14th position on the ladder but could drop as low as 17th. With two rounds to go, it’s about playing the kids and looking to next year.

The stat: Melbourne has had awful trouble kicking a winning score, averaging 10 goals a game. By comparison, last year saw the Demons average 15 goals a match. Scoring is down across the competition, but that’s a significant drop off.

The match-up: Clayton Oliver v George Hewett

Hewett kept Port Adelaide’s Travis Boak to just 13 disposals last week, 10 below his previous lowest for the year. Oliver is averaging 30 disposals and seven clearances this year.

It’s a big week for: Sydney’s “makeshift” ruckmen

With Callum Sinclair, Sam Naismith and Darcy Cameron all sidelined, Sydney is rotating forward Sam Reid, defender Aliir Aliir and fifth-gamer Hayden McLean through the ruck. A tough test looms against All Australian Max Gawn, with the Swans beaten in the clearances last week.

Big call: Christian Petracca has quietly been building a strong season in a poor year for his team and will finish with 25 disposals and two goals against the Swans.

  2. Got VC Gawn, Satan Oliver, Lloyd and Heeney here tonight-with all but Gawn being PODs in my match-ups.

Confident Gawn will go 150+, especially with McLean now out. Have resigned myself to the fact that Hewett will nullify Satan, would loophole him if I could.

On the Swans side, I’m hoping Lloyd can bounce back by feasting on the Dees’ blind FWD50 entries and Heeney just needs to continue his current form.

This game either makes or breaks my weekend.

    Fingers crossed!

    1. Have a good feeling about Llooooyyd. But might just watch with the volume down tonight and listen to the cricket rather than the Channel 7 flogs.
      Or,
TD: watch the cricket and listen to the footy?!?

      1. First go to Channel 9 (or GEM… or whichever one has the cricket), then go to Chanel 7. Your remote probably has a button than lets you rapidly switch between your two most recent channels.

Now, you can watch the football, listen to the cricket, and if something happens in the latter (e.g. a wicket), you can quickly switch over and watch it.

    1. Bob I am seriously thinking the same thing but I have three trades left. I am hoping if he does he goes to him with 30 seconds to go before the first bounce. My opponent in cash league has Treloar and not Oliver and we only have about 4 different.

  3. Surely Greene stays on the ball at GWS
He has nearly been best on ground 3 weeks in a row.
Mind you Cameron will get sacked on the spot if he lines Mumford up at CHF at the first bounce again so maybe Greene plays a mix of both.

  4. I’ve just done a quick “compare the pair” on the Gawn v Aliir match-up tonight.

Gawn is 13 cm taller, 12 kg heavier and averages more than 10 times the HO’s than Aliir- no hyperbole, it’s 38.7 v 3.6.

    Gonna get absolutely bodied!

  5. I’m following the game and SC scores simultaneously, and jeez CD are missing so much. Very annoying.

  6. Did I see Jordan Lewis get tackled over the line and penalized for deliberate-out-of-bounds? He might have helped it over a bit, and it was no doubt the outcome he wanted, but it still seems harsh. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that paid before.

  7. If the Melbourne midfield can get on the end of Maxxy’s brilliant taps they’ll count as to advantage and he’ll smash out 150 easily. Just a question of whether they can master the fine arts of spatial awareness and object permanence.

    1. Gave up on it at half time. Flicked over to the cricket and it’s not much better. Now rained off

    1. That’s cause he’s hitting it to witches hats .
      What a joke of a club .
One player club that joint .
Without Gawn they’d be Gawn .

        1. haha Juju … no worries, it did give me a chance to try to be a bit clever though!!

I think players get paid their annual salary though whether injured or playing … would only be altered by any terms of contracts they sign …

    1. yeah — FF saying hobbled off in Q4 … missed him (cricket watching too!) … but unless the scoring is badly out, everyone needs to think about a viable C choice now … if current score of 117 is accurate, not loop-able enough …

      1. Gawn now up to 121 …. i really hate this scoring / scaling BS system …

edit again : now down to 120 …
and edit again – now dropped to 118 …

    1. Great selection by me to grab Gawn at the bye. Has a 30 point lead on Goldy since Rd14 (after tonight) with Goldy still to come this round. A shame since Goldy’s 1 of my favourites and cost me 180,000 and the opportunity to grab Dunkley but highlights some of the unusual and absurd situations in SuperCoach.

      1. Don’t be hard on yourself. At the time Gawn was 700k with a low BE averaging 131. Who woulda thunk Goldy would hit form and Gawn do his ankle?

        1. Thanks. Just the typical luck I’ve endured in this competition over the past 2 years in regards to injuries and 50-50 decisions. Hoff over Dunkley in RD8 and trading Goldy to Gawn has cost roughly 800+ points but still happy with my performance considering the circumstances.

  9. So thoughts … you probably have to take Lloyd’s 88 yeah? And look to bench one of Sicily, B Smith, Hurn … thoughts??

    0

    2
      1. yeah, not sure … Hurn looked a bit “old and slow” last week (and up against a fast youthful Tigers outfit) … and was also left off a lot in the last quarter … only scored 56 (and I should also add that I benched Smith last week and kept Hurn … which cost me a key match!! ) … Smith wasn’t too good until the last 4 minutes when he scored over 20 with cheap possessions kicking backwards … going to be a tough decision …

        1. 2 contested possessions last week equal 2nd lowest for the season

TOG of 80% equal 2nd lowest this season

14 effective disposals which was 2nd lowest this season, 2nd time below 15 and 2nd time below 17 this season.

          1. yeah I know Adam … I watched him … that’s my point … he looked very unfit (not over the calf?) and struggling on field … travelling this week … perhaps not the best?

            1. Still think he’s safer than Smith but there shouldn’t be a large discrepancy either way.

              2019:
              S Hurn: 2/17 below 85
              B Smith: 8/20 below 85

                1. P Cripps in his 100th and against the Saints who he has a fantastic record against with 2 of the past 3 over 150 but since RD8 he has not scored consecutive tons (scored 100+ last week).

P Dangerfield also has a good record against his opponent as well as 9 of 19 matches this season of 120+.

If the Lions get up Neale should be the main beneficiary due to averaging 120+ in Gabba Wins and Wins with 8 of his 9 120+’s this season occurring in Lions wins.

B Grundy should be a safe option due to his consistency but I don’t think he’ll go overly large and has to contend with both Sauce and Jacobs which could nullify his impact. Would prefer to bank Gawn’s score than select Grundy.

N Fyfe at home usually performs well with 12 120+’s from 17 matches at Optus since 2018 along with 9 120+’s from 10 wins there.

Apart from Z Merrett’s sub 100 score against the Dockers following his concussion suffered in RD1 last year, he has never dipped below 120 against them in his premium scoring history. But I’d prefer to bank Gawn rather than select Merrett as C as it’s unlikely he’ll garner an extra 20 points.

J Kelly could be a massive POD option on return but would be better utilised next week against the Suns.

J Macrae has recorded 8 120+’s from 9 matches since their bye with 4 of them in excess of 140. Away from Marvel with DeBoer to potentially deal with (but would assume he would target the Bont/Dunkley instead) in conjunction with the Dogs potentially losing could be a major deterrence.

                  Therefore:
                  1. N Fyfe
                  2. P Cripps
                  3. L Neale
                  4. P Dangerfield
                  5. J Macrae
                  6. B Grundy
                  7. Z Merrett
                  8. J Kelly
