Game Chat – Port Adelaide vs Western Bulldogs

Written by Thommo on September 11 2021

Where and when: Adelaide Oval at 7:40pm (AEST)

Last time they met: Round 23, 2021: Port Adelaide 9.12 (66) def Western Bulldogs 10.4 (64) at Marvel Stadium

The Dogs looked to have rediscovered their form when they jumped out to a 3 goal lead at quarter time but as had been the recent trend, they couldn’t maintain the rage. The Power gradually ground their way back into the contest with Wines and Boak taking control in the midfield, drawing level during the third quarter. The Dogs steaded, working back out to an 11 point lead at 3 quarter time but they couldn’t hold out the Power, who finished with 3 final quarter goals to just 1 goal for the Dogs. Robbie Gray iced the win with the go-ahead goal with 5 minutes remaining and, despite a late foray forward, Port Adelaide was never headed again.

Last five: Port 5-0, Dogs 2-3

Match Preview:

The Dogs are no strangers to winning a premiership the hard way, having done it in 2017, and this will definitely be hard! Port have had the week off, they are playing at home and they are on a very long winning streak (8 straight?) compared with the Dogs who have travelled from Tassie to Brisbane and now to Adelaide. Add to that the fact that the Dogs have been less than convincing, especially against the Lions last week, and this is Port’s match to lose.

Thommo Watch – Port:

To be honest, I have never really rated Ollie Wines and I am starting to think I am wrong! He has dominated two very strong midfield in his past two matches (against the Dogs and Geelong) and is looking like an unstoppable Bull (unstoppabull?). If he and captain Boak find themselves playing for a premiership next week, the footy world will need to add Wines to the upper echelon of premier midfielders.
Thommo Watch – Bulldogs:

Sorry to mention the war, but I am watching the umpires this week. I don’t know what dirt Bevo has on the umpiring fraternity or the AFLCEO, but they are getting some seriously friendly calls. The Lions still had their chances last week but it leaves a foul taste in the mouth when umpiring affects the outcome of a final. Let’s pray it doesn’t happen in a prelim.

We will be watching umpires!

Thommo’s Tip: Port by 12 points (tipping record 40.5/67).

  1. Evening, all. Power Pepper and Scott the subs.

As much as I’d love to see the Dogs win, just don’t see Port coughing it up at home after a week’s rest. No Keath also a huge loss.

    Port by 27.

  2. ‘Evening GD,
A Port – Melbourne grand final seems to have a nice sound to it.

Port by the margin of differentiation between scoring shots from frees paid in 50m arcs.

  3. Bailey Smith on fire early. Probably been BOG in first 2 games for the dogs and on track for tonight as well.

If dogs get through to GF do they still have that player of the finals series medal? I really don’t understand that award, but if it’s still around then Smith would be a big chance
