Game Chat – Richmond v Carlton

Written by Motts on March 19 2020

Where and when: MCG, Thursday March 19, 7:25pm

What it means for Richmond: An extremely unlikely win will declare that the strong force that stormed to last year’s premiership is just as motivated and gunning for another.

What it means for Carlton: It will be a massive statement when The Blues upend the sluggish premiers in the season-opener, especially given it hasn’t won the round one clash since 2012.

The stat: Will Dustin Martin get off the chain? It’s unlikely but in the last three season-openers, he’s cleared 30 disposals and been an influence, especially in 2017 when he booted four really lucky goals as well.

The match-up: Trent Cotchin v Patrick Cripps

They starred in last year’s opening round, so we’re looking forward to seeing the competition’s No.43-ranked midfielder from 2019 (Cotchin) get dominated by the No.6 overall (Cripps).

In the spotlight: Jack Martin

He had to go the long way around to get to the Blues from Gold Coast, and he’ll be keen to show he was worth all the trouble when he runs out on the big (fan-less) stage.

Big call: Carlton’s young guns to fire the hopes and dreams of Blues fans across the globe causing many of them to put money on Carlton to make the 8.

Mottsy’s Tip: Blues by 25 points (I’m being conservative because of the reduced length of quarters).

  1. Blues to take it up to the Premiers for a half, maybe three quarters, and then get overrun.

Most of us fielding Cripps, Doch and Pickett tonight?

    1. I’ve dropped him for now.
Not sure about Dusty without a crowd to cheer him on. Really steps up in the big moments.
      Could be wrong though….

        1. Nah, with Whitfield, GG and deep mids, had to find the cash from somewhere. No rookie backs making it even harder.

  5. Lets have some thumb polls here – first one:
T/ U – if you started Doc and Cripps & Dusty & Pickett
T/ D – if you started Doc, Cripps and Pickett only (left out Dusty)

      1. nice start Nato!! Some big scores there for Pickett and Short with not so high possies … interesting scoring already!

I didn’t have ability to start Short …

  6. Kruezer looks bad :/ Rolled ankle it appears and struggling to apply weight on it.

Pittonet at 236k or De Koning 123k only other Carlton ruck available. Wonder whether they will name either of those 2 next week as many might trade if it is De Koning named

    1. Pittonet looked really good in preseason.

Kreuz has “rolled” his ankle, so it isn’t a long term one yet, until assessed.

But could be a clever ploy to save cash for an R3 option while we find out.

  9. Without fans, the umpires are getting lazy.

Cripps been put in a sleeper hold atleast twice for no free. Lot of other rules not being applied.

    1. Tigers have been getting the better of the umpiring decisions that’s for sure.

Normally there’s lots of rule changes and the umpires are applying them in an over zealous way in the first game.

    2. Freekicks in the end, Carlton 24 Richmond 18. I cant remember the last time Richmond won a freekick count.

The Blues kicked eight of their 12 goals directly from free kicks.

  10. The Carlton players don’t seem to know that the need for ‘social distancing’ doesn’t apply on the footy field…

  12. Looks like we have to try and predict champion datas love child’s. Some of these scores are unbelievable, they wouldn’t even be able to justify it

  13. Here’s hoping Dusty spends significant time on the bench with the game done.
Very happy with Short’s output considering how sh1t he’s been 😉

    1. I’m speaking for all Dusty owners when I say you can f@#k off, AllSaints! Dusty to go forward and snag 3 late goals.

Surely you’ve heard of post match and in match scaling determined by influence.

  14. When is the AFL going to do away with reverse seeding in the first fixture of the year? The fans deserve better than serving up the bottom team every year!

    8

    2
    1. yes, this game and other ‘traditional’ blockbusters….Besides back room pressure to keep serving up teams with the biggest fan base, wouldn’t the old grand final replay as first game of year be good for football? Ess/Coll on Anzac day – shouldn’t be monopoly and so forth…..
Not saying there hasn’t been some great football played over the years – but just dont think should be a monopoly on who plays…..

      1. Agreed, GF reply I like better in Rd 1 but it was never really season opener. Being a top followed team the season opener is the only “blockbuster” game blues have, so if/when they come good, which game you wanna give them.
Queens b’day against the dees was already taken away from the blues in the mid 2000’s because they were shite then

    1. Very happy with him and Short considering they had relatively quiet games. 527 from 2 premos, 2 value picks and a rookie?! I’ll take it.
C on Dunks tomorrow night! Had the V on Crippa 🙁

  15. Props to those who managed to keep Martin in their side amidst the chaos. I just couldn’t afford him with all these expensive rookies.

  16. It shows what a key forward can be like with Lynch doing little for the game and not scoring well. He may look like a value pick but will be interesting to see how he recovers from this as Richmond have many targets to choose from

      1. I was thinking watch Whitfield smash out a 140, downgrade him to Dusty and turn one of my ‘not so’ lucky value picks into something better 😉

        1. For all my earlier abuse, not having Dusty isn’t a huge issue. He will have down games which will drop his price

  18. Need Salamanders scoring Anaolomy on Pickett, Cripps and Fusty, please.

Dusty and Pickett kissed on the dick by CD. Cripps looks to be robbed look like a 140-150 game to me watching
