Game Chat – Richmond v Geelong

Written by Motts on June 7 2019

Where and when: MCG, Friday June 7, 7.50pm AEST

What it means for Richmond: An upset win over the top team in the competition would send a message that last week’s disappointing loss was an aberration. It would also keep the Tigers in the top eight.

What it means for Geelong: The MCG has not recently been a happy hunting ground for Geelong when playing Richmond, and a win against a top-eight side would be a confidence booster ahead of September.

The stat: Richmond lost 20 of 21 matches to Geelong between 2001 and 2017, before breaking the streak in the qualifying final of that year. The Tigers have now won the past three games between the two clubs.

The match-up: David Astbury v Tom Hawkins

Hawkins is traditionally a match-up for Alex Rance, with Astbury looking likely to take the job. The Cat is in red-hot form, making it a tough task for Astbury.

It’s a big week for: Richmond’s midfield

Coach Damien Hardwick said the team was “smacked around” against North Melbourne, losing the contested ball by 22 and tackle count by 17. It’s not going to be any easier against the likes of Cats Tim Kelly, Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood.

Big call: In his second week back in the side after a hamstring injury, Trent Cotchin will find his feet and finish with 30 touches.

Mottsy’s Tip: Cats by 30 points

  2. Is Danger a MUST VC this week? Seems to be a popular choice, but I’m leaning towards Cunnington into J. Kelly.

  3. I read Jack Ross out for 4-6 weeks. Is this confirmed? Been holding awaiting his return but if that’s correct then I’ll trade away

      1. Welcome home Hutta!

Is anyone else thinking Lynch (Ric) is a worse trade than both Franklin and Hanners (Stk)?

        I do.

        1. He takes players with him but his effort is short of pathetic.
          Needs a full pre-season.

Maybe next year. He’ll be under $300k at this rate and if he has a decent bye, might even be a starter?! They’ll have CAR Rd1 😉

  4. Predictions for tonight…

Houli to get injured unfortunately, iced up at HT. (Hope I’m wrong)

Tigers to come out firing but run out of steam.

    Balta to kick 3.

Tim Kelly to be tagged hard by Jack Graham, who will do an excellent job.

Cotchin to put in a clinic despite a tigers loss.

Danger to score well ish but spend a large portion of time in the forward line trying to expose the tigers weakened defence.

Stack to hit the ton again with more time on the wing.

Tom Stewart BOG with 10 intercepts, 28 possies and the sealer.

  5. Is it worth trading out Hore next week to field 18, or is he a almost a keeper?

    1. Better chance that Whitfield would’ve been named over Hately lol. That kid can’t catch a break, would be best 22 in ANY other side. Shame.

    2. WAIT! Hold a second.

“Leon Cameron tells AFL Tonight that Toby Greene is in doubt. Didn’t train at Adelaide Oval tonight. Jackson Hately is here and is the likely replacement. Whitfield targeting return in Essendon game after the bye after breaking collarbone”

      Source: FoxFooty

Any merit to it or just typical GWS charades?

      1. Hately is listed as emergency so there is always a chance. As for playing with a broken collarbone I have seen players who just played through the pain without missing a game

  7. Tom Lynch is that kid who you pick first in a game of lunch-time footy in high school because he’s tall and you think he’ll be good but who turns out to be a dud.

    1. I’m lucky to have him on the bench. Dodged a bullet there. Hope he pulls his finger out shortly though.

      1. Guys Re Clark…

Chill out..only the best 18 score this week.

Unless you only have 18 warm bodies this week, you can afford a couple of spud scores, they won’t count anyway.

        Relax and enjoy the game.

  8. Go Ash Barty, into the final. She’s a class act.

    TU: Ash the MASHINE
TD: Kyrgios and Tomic are wankers (an underused word these days….wanker)

  9. Looks like Rat has pinged his hammy. Fort should get 3 games after the bye and presents a perfect downgrade option for ROB in round 14.

  10. Have a look at fan footy. All Richmond players have a cactus next to their name. Geelong players have a vultures next to their name. Never seen that.

    1. Last year saw the entire Carlton side get the witches hat icon against Freo when they kicked about one goal for a half…. loved it

    1. Not being rewarded the points though. Last 5 minutes centre clearance, inside 50, free kick holding the ball, intercept contested mark, effective kick. All for 13 points.
Atkins been a bit stiff this quarter too
