Game Chat – Richmond v Melbourne

Written by Motts on April 24 2019

Where and when: MCG, Wednesday April 24, 7.35pm

Last time they met: MCG, round five, 2018: Melbourne 8.8 (56) lost to Richmond 15.12 (102)

The final margin hides the fact this was a hotly contested, physical game. Richmond, boosted by an even contribution across the park, wore down the Demons to blow out the difference from 19 points at three-quarter time to 46 by the final siren.

What it means for Richmond: The continued righting of the ship. After a disastrous opening few rounds with two 40-plus-point losses and injury to star players, the Tigers sit at 3-2 coming into this match.

What it means for Melbourne: Salvaging of pride. Last weekend was a horror show for Melbourne, comprehensively outplayed by an improving St Kilda. In an even season, every win counts, but one over Richmond would be a confidence boost.

How Richmond wins: Speed. Fortunately for the Tigers, they have it in spades. Melbourne were slow and beaten on the outside last week and Richmond is in a good position to exploit it again.

How Melbourne wins: Clearances have been Richmond’s Achilles heel the past few years, and Melbourne has some of the stronger inside midfielders in the competition. Using Max Gawn’s ruck work to advantage is vital.

The stat: Richmond superstar Dustin Martin regained some form last week against Sydney but playing Melbourne has often been an issue for the midfielder. Martin averages 22 disposals against the Dees, which most players would be pleased with, but it’s his second-lowest return.

The match-up: Tom Lynch v Sam Frost

With Oscar McDonald out of favour, Melbourne’s one recognised key back is Frost (229th overall in the Official AFL Player Ratings). He will be up against Tom Lynch (207th), who was goalless last week, but kicked 16 in the first four rounds.

It’s a big week for: Tom McDonald

It’s been a horrible start for the Melbourne key forward. He hasn’t been helped by poor delivery inside 50, but McDonald has only kicked two goals this year. Was moved into the Saints huddle at half time last week in a bid to get him involved in at least part of the game.

Big call: Jack Riewoldt will return with a bang after missing three games with a wrist injury and kick four goals.

Mottsy’s Tip: Tigers by 40 points

    1. I’m sorry, but Goodwin is a moron if he’s going to stick with game plan. Hibberd’s old ass on Martin and your most dynamic mid at FF.

      SC aside, just dumb.

      1. How tf is Melksham in the midfield and Oliver at Full Forward meant to change anything! Absolute stupidity at its finest

Melskshams ball use is pathetic to start with!

  5. I can’t fricken believe it.

    Faaaaaaaaark!

I last minute reversed my trades, was distracted, and forgot to change my Captains choice. I was going Rocky into Cripps.

Guess who I Captained last week.

    Yep Max Gawn!!!!!!!

I have never need you to fire more you big bearded beast!

Rookie error or stroke of genius ?

    1. My friend did that last week and had Grundy and Neale with the VC and C so he only got the 91 points for Neale and lost his matchup because of that mistake. We aren’t letting him forget it 😉

              1. Dropped out on.. Scott to Baker 🙁

                Just went Butters to Ross.

I really wanted a trade in hand with all the unknowns around selection.

At least the Gawn thing ended up alright!

                1. yeah, went well for you mate! Maybe the not trading will too … Baker may not play many … i’m sure many will be hoping not.

I must say, based on earlier scoring matches with kicks into contested positions, particularly Newman, then Stack received very favourable scoring on a couple of his kicks as they were just up and unders! Newman screwed in scoring and Stack rated at 100%!! Typical of CD …

Looks like there is some peanut out there tonight down-voting everyone’s comments on here too … hope the remaining games go as well Freo!

  8. I need to give this game away, second week running I’ve been caught napping, reversed trades 5 times today to get it right, only to have Hore on the bench again unmarked as an emergency. Will likely ton up just to rub salt into the wounds.

  9. My name is Sophie Louise Ursula Therese Hore. My son plays for Melbourne. Its disgusting how you all make fun of his name. He’s a good boy.
He comes home from training late at night and continues training….I know cause I see the internet modem flicking, and loud noises from his room accompanied by banging on his walls, and groans as he puts in superhuman efforts, always followed by deep and mournful sighs as he completes his work.
To hear these shameful comments to do with his name is saddening. To explain…how do you think I felt years ago when people actually sent letters. Mine were addressed to Mrs S.L.U.T. Hore
    Please be considerate.

      1. No…. your an outdated Troll.. That has no respect for women.

I know you think your being funny, but save it for your mates at the pub.

Oh thats right, your a troll , you probably don’t have any mates.

Take your out dated sexist jokes to another site!

        1. Oh, yeah baby. Perfectly said.

Cop a dose of that, you hick.

FT hittin’ em’ with the progressive punches AND an inadvertant captaincy on Gawn!

    1. Haha, great parody. It’s a pity that those who’ve commented negatively have no sense of finesse with language conventions and purely interpret this in its literal context.

      3

      1
      1. Funny….I see so many crude sexist comments about Hore each week. Some light hearted and obviously tongue in cheek satire however, brings a storm of derision and abuse. Hypocritical in the highest degree.

Perhaps I should just go to the Melbourne Comedy Festival instead and follow the example of the great Barry Humphries.

        1. And of course the name Mrs Hore is a pseudonym…..Im actually a voracious contributor to this site whose usual name would be recognised by most on here. Best I stay anonymous I think. No one died, no one was personally targeted or abused.

          5
          1. Mrs Hore.

I hardly call my comments on yours ” A torrent of abuse”

            I just called a spade a spade..

The definition of a troll is someone who hides behind a online persona , and who’s comments are taken negatively by the majority of people on line.

The amount of thumbs down you received proves my point.

I have also down voted a few simpler Hore jokes.

Impersonating a real person, and insinuating that she is a Sl*t is much worse, and really taking things a step too far in my book.

I see from your further comments you genuinely think that was funny.

How would you explain this “joke” to your 14 year old daughter if you had one? Or to your mother?

Presuming everyone on this site is a 30/40 something bloke that will find your comments funny is narrow minded and frankly just wrong.

Your right, no one really got hurt or died, but all types of people visit this site from teenage girls to grandma’s

Keep that in mind before you make any “jokes” in the future.

            Rant over.. back to SC.

  11. Very tough choice on my captain choice this week. Do i go Bines or Setterfield as 1 has always been my captain except last week but the other is 100% out. Tough decisions 😉
    TU Bines
    TD Setterfield

    1. haha…love it. I had the same terrible decision to make. Went Bines. I’m backing him for the year and he has DPP !! Just like setter.

  13. I fucked up!!!!

E on Balta and Parker on pine!!!!!!! Setterfield on field who I have to C to take Gawns score. What can I do?

Downgrade a player to a loop whole who will soon play: T/U

Man up and Cop Baltas 30ish while taking Gorns huge Vc

I’ll probably lose 20-40 points as Parker should our score balta

    3

    9
    1. Balta + Gawn’s captain 145 = 176.
      Parker + alternate C = ?

You need to do the math on it but I reckon Parker is good for 50-60, which means your C just has to score 115-125 for you to break even. Not worth a trade imo, unless you were going to do the trade anyway.

  14. Currently at the Kuala Lumpur airport so following scores on here and fanfooty. How is Vlaustin scoring so much, he’s not getting an absolute shed load of the footy?

    6

    1
      1. Saw the possessions but not the efficiency, cheers. 155 from 28 touches is very impressive. Now, does anyone have him in their team as he’s usually good for 80-odd but that’s about it

        2

        3
    1. You’d be mad if you didn’t take Gawn in my opinion, however I’m not a qualified doctor…

      8

      2
    1. When have they been close to the dream? Smashed in a Prelim on the back of an easy draw in 2018 is as close as Jones’s has been in 13 seasons.

      1
      1. I thought that too , plus I didn’t end up taking Baker , I went Ross and Lockhart instead to cash up got rid of Atkins and Wagner.

      1. I was very close to doing the same, my loss for not taking the risk

        Fair play to you mate

        1

        1
  17. Baker looked better than 84 points tonight. I’ll take it and would’ve been happy with that at the start of the game but he looked like a tonner tonight…

  18. Was driving long distance, about 5 mins before kickoff I stopped at a red light long enough to chuck the VC on Big Maxxy 🙂
    Thank you red light.

Also glad I bought in Baker and Ross, should bring some sweet sweet cash in the following weeks

    16

    0
      1. Out of the 3 rookies Ross has the most time on field with Stack having the least at around 70% TOG and Ross at 80%. Baker in the middle.
I wonder if that will have any indication on JS or if it just fitness levels and certain roles

        1

        0
        1. I’m not sure it has to be one of those three that make way. It’ll come down to roles obviously, but all 3 would be ahead of Balta and probably Daniel Rioli in terms of current form and impact in the last 3 games…

          5

    1. Still hit the ton after having a ‘bad night’. Still finding plenty of the ball. He’ll pay off in the long-term…….

      10

      1
        1. But in Oliver’s defense, this is the first year he’s had issues with his efficiency. Treloar, not so much.

          4

  19. So i went against conventional wisdom trading a struggling keeper (darling) to a rookie, baker, its only one game but 250k in bank , plus about roughly 80k price jump now and 84 points after 9 last week, its nice to have a little win occasionally. Long term who knows.

    17

    0
    1. Nicely done, Bruce.

If Darling played for any other team I also would have traded him, but I feel like a traitor trading one of my own- plus I think, or at the very the least hope, that he’ll bounce back.

      3

      0
      1. Thanks gd , I wouldn’t be surprised if he bounces back, obviously rated him enough to put him in my starting team , just not happening for him at the moment.

  20. Really proud of the Tigers……..If you told me after the GWS game that we’d be 4-2 with upcoming winnable games against Dogs, Freo & Hawks, I’d have thought you were crazy.
Baker has taken over Butler’s position. Not as fast as Butler but disposal and footy smarts are simply better.
Stack is so composed and barely wastes a disposal.
    Ross is a ready-made player at 18.
Grimes/Vlastuin/Astbury – rocks in defence, so reliable
Houli…..great to see him back in form.
Edwards has a new lease of life running off half-back (and undefeated as Captain) 😉
    Exciting times ahead………Go Tigers!

    12

    1
    1. Yeah, you can’t complain if you’re a Tigers fan. Really held up well over the last few weeks, gw.

    2. And as an added bonus, on the whole, their 2017 and 2018 picks are starting to play well in the VFL. They’ve built the skeleton of their next generation team with their under 23 talent.

And they potentially have two decent father sons to be drafted in the next 3 years.

As a tiger fan, they’ve definitely become a well run club.

Ross was the 41st pick, Stack went undrafted, they’re not doing it with high draft picks. We’ve got our first round pick this year too still running around in the VFL.

“He’ll miss some time” Damien Hardwick

News for Bolton owners as he should get another chance?
