Game Chat – Richmond v Sydney

Written by Thommo on April 20 2019

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Saturday April 20, 7.25pm AEST

Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round 15, 2018: Richmond 14.9 (93) defeated Sydney 11.1 (67)

Richmond held Sydney at bay for most of the match until a flurry of Swans goals cut the margin to just four points at the first minute of the last term. It was the last time Sydney would score.

What it means for Richmond: After an undermanned team caused an upset win on the road over Port Adelaide, another four points would boost confidence in the young cubs even further at Punt Road.

What it means for Sydney: At one and three, the ledger could get ugly for the Swans if they don’t start getting wins on the board, especially ahead of a battle with crosstown rivals Greater Western Sydney.

How Richmond wins: The Tigers were back to their hassling best last week, and have the speed across the ground to beat the Swans, particularly in the midfield and across half-forward.

How Sydney wins: The blueprint has been set for how to defeat Richmond. Retain possession across half-back using kicks, denying the small forwards the opportunity to pounce on a loose ball.

The stat: Richmond is averaging 339.3 disposals a match after four weeks, the fewest of any club. While in recent years, the Tigers haven’t been the biggest ball-winners, (averaging 366.8 in 2018 and 364.7 in 2017), the downward turn is an issue.

The match-up: Lance Franklin v Dylan Grimes

Franklin v Alex Rance has been an enthralling battle over the years, but with Rance injured and David Astbury not quick enough, the shorter but agile Grimes (196th overall) will have to stand up.

It’s a big week for: Aliir Aliir

After taking on one of the biggest men in the game in Braydon Preuss, Aliir will be faced with another big task, lining up on the in-form Tom Lynch. After a pre-season on the sidelines, Lynch is just starting to hit his straps in his new colours, coming off a six-goal haul.

Big call: It’s been a relatively quiet few weeks for the lookalike pair, but Richmond’s Jack Higgins and Sydney’s Ben Ronke will kick three goals each under the roof.

Thommo’s Tip: Richmond by 20 points.

I’m predicting they will score 126 between then.

Could be stack 94 and Balta 32 …..or the other way around.

  4. So if you have the ball in your defensive 50 and with no pressure kick it 20 metres to the opposition. They mark it uncontested then kick a goal.
Who many points should the defender loose?
Now if that defender is Lloyd how many?

  6. Satck controlling things beautifully across half back, looks like he’s played 100 games. Very composed and should be safe for a few weeks at least…….

  7. Who has the C to use yet?
As I can’t use the VC I need to pick right as my H2H is within points.
    TU- Cripps
    TD- Danger
Comment – crouch v Gold Coast

    1. Haven’t you got Constable? Go Cripps into Danger. Or did you mean to say you’ve already used VC?

      1. I messed up and put the E on Wagner and his score is poor and would need to take it to use the VC instead of the prospective score from Atkins

  8. The way the Tigers are playing, it’s really hard to see who goes out for Cotchin. At this stage I think it may be Ross. Baker, Stack and Bolton playing their roles beautifully at the moment. Ross also having a great game IMO, but is probably more of a like for like with Cotchin. Whoever gets dropped will be very unlucky based on the first half tonight.

    1. My guess would be Balta for Riewoldt and McIntosh for Cotch.
Dusty would play the Mckintosh role, he’ll attend the centre clearance then play high forward.

Tonight Dustin would attend the centre bounce then push forward and a forward would play mid.

  11. So i have the dilemma of taking Gawn’s 126 with constable of the captain’s loop but the emerg is on Scott who scored only 41.
TU: Take the 41 and Gawn’s score leaving Constable onfield
TD: Put Atkins on field instead of Constable and put the C on Cripps

      1. 37 possessions, 135 dream team, but only 111 SuperCoach, indicating his possessions, while numerous, were not highly effective or influential. Still, 28 kicks, 9 marks, 9 handballs, 3 tackles, 703 metres gained… what should he have gotten? 80?

        1. He has a sc friendly game and can play , he just doesn’t have a big impact on games in my opinion.

          1. We’re all over it Bruce, but the guy scores SCpts for fun. His BE is now on the rise. I think we need to stop complaining and start planning when us non-owners exactly, will be bringing him in!

  13. Really glad I took some terrible advice and didn’t pick up stack this week. Always go with your gut

    1. Missed him as well, opted for O’Brien and Hore instead. Happy with my decision so far, fingers crossed O’Brien can keep pumping out 85+ scores.

Did you take someone instead of Stack, or just hold the trade?

    2. I held off stack intentionally as i felt i didn’t had a midfield rookie that was ready to trade and knowing his tonne was in his price cycle for 1 round it made me feel he wasn’t going to go well. Always Ross next week if he can maintain his spot as 1 will surely go for Cotchin and for all we know it might even be Mcintosh
