Game Chat – Richmond vs Carlton

Written by Thommo on March 22 2018

Venue: MCG at 7:25pm AEST

LAST FIVE MEETINGS
R14, 2017, Richmond 11.18 (84) d Carlton 8.10 (58) at the MCG
R1, 2017, Richmond 20.12 (132) d Carlton 14.5 (89) at the MCG
R1, 2016, Richmond 14.8 (92) d Carlton 12.11 (83) at the MCG
R15, 2015, Richmond 10.11 (71) d Carlton 5.11 (41) at the MCG
R1, 2015, Richmond 15.15 (105) d Carlton 11.12 (78) at the MCG

Game notes: These two teams have played each other in the season opener every year since 2007, with the exception of 2014, for five wins each. However, the Tigers own the form side of this equation, having won the last six head-to-heads (including return matches outside of round one), and will enter this one as not only premiers but raging favourites. They’ll be missing a few premiership players with Daniel Rioli (foot) and Nathan Broad (suspended) out while Bachar Houli (calf) and Dion Prestia (hamstring) have had limited pre-seasons. The Blues are without defenders Sam Docherty and Sam Rowe plus Jarrod Pickett (wrist) but have been buoyed by the late pre-season form of Jacob Weitering, who is expected to be stationed down back this season, while recruits Paddy Dow and Matthew Kennedy plus Patrick Cripps impressed in the Blues’ two pre-season wins.

Thommo’s Tip: Richmond by 35 points.

Who wins the season opener?

        1. Sssshhh everyone will bring him in. It’s nuts that he was a pod going in but we have to keep a lid on it until r3 then all bets are off (have had him in since FEB and pleaded with everyone to pick him; so if they didn’t heed my wisdom then as the saying goes; ***k em!)

            1. Great end to 2017, check. Same role over JLT, check. Named on ball Rd1, check. Think all these tipped me over last minute.

              1. I’ve got him too. Long way to go yet though and he’s working hard enough, just not getting the footy. Hopefully the second half will be better!

  4. To the idiot that took Simpson out of my team after he was there for the entire pre-season – mate, you’re a deadset clown.

    1. Same boat here Chillo. Was put off after his role in JLT.

Changed to Hibberd or not really wll have to choose between Howe and McGovern.

Leaning towards McGovern with the wet weather predictions Saturday night not going to suit Howe.

Happy with how Martin VC and Cripps are going.
Garlett on the Mid bench with the Emergency.

  5. Hands up who didn’t follow Thommo’s checklist thoroughly?? Last minute changes to get Dusty in (and Danger) as well as trying to manage NRL SC side as well, and I completely forgot to shift the VC onto Dusty!! Doh!

Will have to choose another combination now … and Dusty off to a flyer of a score at Qtr time it seems! Ouch

  7. I reckon Kamdyn McIntosh is looking a bit slow, I mean he’s always been slow, but for a winger, can’t catch anyone

  8. Made a last minute call to swap brodie for jack graham instead of Hunter clarke. Not looking good so far.

  9. Cracking game! Three thoughts so far:
    * Olango is going to be a popular captain this weekend.
    * Cripps on track to break the contested possession record?
    * The E on Garlett looks promising….

    1. hey Chillo, if you have the E on Garlett, who do you have as a non player to put on field … or will you change your selections to take his score? Not so great finishing on 61 though?

      1. Nah, I won’t be looping that score. Looked good at halftime though.

I did have an extreme plan of bringing in a certain midfielder who is not playing this week, but I won’t be doing that now. Common sense prevails.

        1. I’d be eyeing off Robbie Gray in a similar plan but not enough gain to make it worth altering my set up to make it happen.

        2. yeah, he is on my Fwd bench with the E and HT I was thinking, oh-oh, who do I swap!! Happy to leave the 60 there now … but not happy I forgot to put the VC on Dusty … *sigh*

  10. Geeeze. Cripps, Simpson and Dusty all lighting it up.

Feeling like a right silly duffer for not picking any of them.

      1. Not saying he’s not durable, he was just zero value. Price absolutely maxed and last year was one out of the box. When you’ve got blokes like Martin and Goldy under 540k you can’t buy Matt Kruezer…

        3

        5
        1. He’s always shared ruck, last year was his first solo as opposed to out of the box. Averaged 125 against his first 8 oppoents last year and 65 at half time just shows you his scoring potential. Will be the highest averaging ruck come seasons end. All the others have scoring risk with Pruess/Archie, who will all get games during the season.

          1. Hey Hutta – may have missed discussions, but is Jacobs not in favour for any particular reason? What have I missed?

  13. Had Simmo as a starter last 3 seasons , thought he was to old this year. barrack for the tigers , great respect for simmo!

    1. Just remember he can’t cope with a tag and his run off the backline is really important. It wouldn’t surprise me if he receives a defensive forward soon, although with Gold Coast next week he should still score well.

  14. It looks like Marchbank was not a trap after all. Well done to those who had the courage to start with him.

  15. Graham – 100 / Townsend – 78..
Cant believe neither were in any expert teams or even mentioned. Both steals at their respective prices considering their averages from end 2017!.. so overlooked in S-Coach. I got em both..

    1. Graham definitely a steal, however expected price growth from 280k is to about 85 point average… maybe 425k?

So a good earner with decent points. Not a bad pick, but we hope for similar points from Brayshaw, and a 200k price rise, and even Garlett at 60 ppg will earn 200k.

It’s all about the Benjamins, baby.

      1. In a year of dodgy ruck options that might be good. For now I’ll try take the money and find out who to jump on.

      2. yeah I have Nank at R2. Happy to see early reward. He had a few frees against so he clears those up it will be a good year.

  16. So being in the UK i have just got home from work and watched the game, and what a game it was, great game! Early nights for me this weekend, need to be up at 4am and 3am respectively this weekend to sort my team out!

Simpson just shafts me every year! when i have him he spuds it up for a few weeks and i rage trade him, when i don’t have him he goes mad. Had him in my team for last few months, traded out due to JLT scores and the fact his sidekick Doch is missing…..the rest is history!

Anyway i’m not mad, just the two played for me so far, just glad the footy is back 🙂
