Game Chat – St Kilda v Brisbane

Written by Thommo on June 22 2019

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Saturday June 22, 4.35pm AEST

What it means for St Kilda: A percentage of 87 is wretched for a team eyeing off finals, so the Saints would need an extra win over the ninth-placed side to feature in September. They could tilt the equation in their favour, with a victory moving them to 7-6.

What it means for Brisbane: The young Lions haven’t won outside Queensland since beating North Melbourne in round two at Marvel Stadium. Producing away from home is the sign of a really good team, and defeating a Saints side that has been resilient would be meritorious.

The stat: Brisbane is ranked No.2 for tackles inside 50 per game. Skipper Dayne Zorko leads the way with 27 through 12 games, while Charlie Cameron (17), Lincoln McCarthy (14), Mitch Robinson (14), Eric Hipwood (14) and Jarryd Lyons (12) have also helped apply pressure.

The match-up: Rowan Marshall v Stefan Martin

Marshall has been one of the Saints’ best in 2019, having thrived after being thrust into the ruck role. Martin has been a bit down on form but despite being 32, there’s life in the big man yet.

It’s a big week for: Daniel Rich

The left-footer is having a great season and his boot could be very effective at Marvel Stadium, with conditions to be ideal for him to cut through St Kilda.

Thommo’s Tip: Brisbane by 15 points.

      1. I don’t know about spirited, but I can make a statistical one: English has a hitout win percentage of 30 % – and that’s from playing ruckmen who are far less dominant than Grundy most weeks. Last time they played, Grundy won, from memory, about 90 percent of the hitouts. There’s no reason he shouldn’t do that again.

Assume he attends 70 ruck contests (Grundy averages 75, English 65, so we’ll split the difference). If he wins 90 percent of the hitouts from those, thats 63 hitouts. His average hitout-to-advantage rate is 28 percent. 63 x .28 = 17.64, which rounds up to 18 hitouts to advantage. That’s an automatic 90 points right there.

If he’s not sore, then, with everything he does around the ground, that should pretty much guarantee at least a 150+ score. And even if he is sore, and therefore more restricted than usual, he should still be good for 30 to 40 non-hitout-related points, and thus score 120-130.

Now, Gawn managed to crack 150, so if you had the VC on him, there’s no reason to take any risks. Just lock it in. But if you missed the boat on that one, then the only way Grundy will blow up in your face is if he goes down injured, or is a late out.

  4. Neale being tagged by Seb Ross … looks like very bad news for all of us Neale owners … all teams will tag him now as he can’t shake a decent tag …

    2. nah mate – it wasn’t really his last quarter, per se. I think the scoring system was going haywire the whole time – Fan Footy was crashing and all over the place with the scores … I think they were able to finally fix it as he was going up in 20 point blocks for things like handballs etc … he definitely had a better second half though, in real footy terms …

  6. Neale has been tagged plenty of times in his career and has still killed it. Saints aren’t putting a hard tag on him. Still getting plenty of the ball but as mentioned earlier just not contested or penetrating so far. He is a gun but just not having a massive night so far.
