Game Chat – St Kilda v Richmond

Written by Father Dougal on June 30 2019

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Sunday June 30, 1.10pm AEST

What it means for St Kilda: A couple of disastrous performances in their past three matches means the Saints need to return to the stifling, defensively sound form on show earlier in the year.

What it means for Richmond: Three straight losses have the Tigers stumbling. A mounting injury toll has proven a tough obstacle, but they need to reverse the results to ensure they feature come September.

The stat: Richmond averages 14.2 fewer contested possessions per game than its opponent, ranked last in the competition.

The match-up: Tom Lynch v Jake Carlisle

Lynch has copped his fair share of criticism this year but was in the rehab group for most of pre-season, as was Carlisle, who returned in the loss to Brisbane after back surgery. He looked rusty, so it could be an intriguing duel between a couple of big names not quite in top form.

It’s a big week for: Alan Richardson

The pressure has been bubbling away for the coach all season but it’s ramped right up after the diabolical outing against the Lions. His football manager, Simon Lethlean, put the Saints’ inability to beat teams above them on the ladder on the agenda, so while the Tigers enter round 15 outside the top eight, their credentials make them a scalp, something Richardson badly needs for his job security.

Father Dougal’s Tip: Tigers by 20 points.

  1. Traded Darling to Marshall this week and of course Darling goes ahead and slams on 5 goals for 123 SC. Just hope Marshall smashes Soldo today so I won’t completely hate myself!

    1. He’ll get close you’d think and will definitely score more points for you between now and Rd23.
      I hope he bl00dy does anyway 😉

  2. so folks – dilemma is here now for first time all year … what to do with the C / VC scores. Grundy was my VC.

Chillo looks to have me covered in Contibs league, taking Macrae as his C. My only chance is to run with Gawn and hope he goes very large or swap to Fyfe and hope he does the same.

BUT I’m also tight in a few other leagues with impacts everywhere … and am just over 1000 overall so have to factor that in to. …

What does everyone think does Gawn have chance of going 160+ against the Lions (nice sunny day here) or does Fyfe have chance of doing same in the rain in the west against the Crippsless Blues (will they try and tag Fyfe with Curnow??)

    All thoughts greatly welcome!!

    1. Gawns past games against the lions haven’t been great but he did just absolutely smash Grundy so there’s a good chance he does the same to Martin! Up to you to take the risk.

    2. Quite a dilemma indeed, Macca.

If you’re set against taking Grundy’s 133 then I’d probably go Gawn to touch up Martin, seems to be crushing every ruckman in his path. Not sure Curnow will go to Fyfe, you’d they’d need him to try and cover Cripps rather than comitting him to a tagging role. Think both will score well, but passing on 133 is ballsy.

      1. Thanks folks – yeah, normally a no brainer to not take the 133 …. Bruce p on here is also very much in the mix to roll me in SCT3 – he has Gawn as C as he took Danger with VC – he’s currently projected to get me as he has Andrews and Walters to come with me 150 in front … that’s with both of us with the C on Gawn … hmmmm

  6. Chol doing well today. Few skill errors, but 2 goals and decent DE. Held his spot with Soldo returning and guys like Baker, Naish, Balta and Higgins were omitted ahead of him. With Nank still 3 – 4 weeks away, might Chol’s JS be okay?

    1. Something is up. The richmond podcast I listen to said the club is sending Balta back into the reserve to learn how to play the intercepting defending in their defence. (He trained with the forwards group over the preseason).

I suspect they liked having a back up ruck in balta but now they need him permanently, (garthwaite isn’t ready) down back, so they want a ruck/foward.

Lynch was supposed to get a game off this season, that was the plan the club has said but riewolt went down.

I suspect when riewolt is back we’ll see him and Chol play forward for a game while Lynch gets a week off. And the team needs to get use to playing with two keyforwards so Chol and Lynch for now and Chol and Riewolt for a game after that.

  7. when you see lynch miss such easy set shots as that
you realize that he will never be a great fwd
    just a serviceable one

  8. the scoring system is just soooo much BS – Marshall just went from 81 to 96 to 112 … in that last minute of that half …

          1. Now he’s on 140. Gone from 69 points at the 20 min mark of 3rd quarter, to 140 at 6 mins mark of the 4th

            1. With they way they now score ruckmen, turns out going with 4-5 ruckmen would have been wise.

              Gawn,Grundy,ROB

              with
              Marshall Lycett forward.

    1. Gotta be happy with Marshall’s debut for you GD!? 😉
Has been my best trade of the year (incl. ROB) for me.

I ducked out with the grandparents and the boy.
G’ma: “You can stay and watch the footy if you want?!”
      Me: “No thanks!”

      Wise choice 🙁
