Game Chat – Sydney v Hawthorn

Written by Motts on June 21 2019

Where and when: SCG, Friday June 21, 7.50pm AEST

What it means for Sydney: Only premiership contenders Geelong, Greater Western Sydney, Collingwood and West Coast have a better record over their past five games than the Swans, and their two losses came to the Cats and the Magpies. A big chance to continue the momentum.

What it means for Hawthorn: A loss would all but end the Hawks’ slim finals hopes with clashes against West Coast, Collingwood, Fremantle and Geelong to follow. They’ve won their last four in Sydney so won’t be intimidated.

The stat: Big Ben McEvoy had seven clearances, 15 possessions and 52 hit-outs in last year’s win over Sydney at the SCG to earn himself three Brownlow votes. Callum Sinclair will be primed to give his side the advantage this year in his 100th senior match.

The match-up: George Hewett v Jaeger O’Meara

The Swans’ stopper is more than just a run-with player these days, so he’ll try and limit O’Meara’s influence around stoppages, where Hewett thrives himself, and hurt his opponent the other way. Hewett has gathered 29 touches in three of his last four games so can be extremely damaging in his own right.

It’s a big week for: Lance Franklin

The superstar forward finally found his mojo before the bye and will be keen to begin the second half of his season in similar form against his old side. With the Hawks’ defence undermanned Franklin might relish the Friday night stage to put on another show.

Big call: Hewett and Ryan Clarke will put the clamps on O’Meara and Ricky Henderson, with the pair of Hawks limited to less than 30 possessions between them.

Mottsy’s Tip: Swans by 30 points

  2. Lloyd VC anyone ?

130 and 149 last year against the Hawks. Cousins out so shouldn’t be any worry of anyone running with him.

Was originally running Gawn into Danger but with cloud of Danger (due to his wife expecting the baby and Danger not travelling with the main group) am changing Lloyd into Gawn!

    Hoping it pays off

  3. Oh schiesse! Sicily looks like he’s playing up with the fwd group … that sucks just traded him in FFS Clarkson you muppet!!

    1. it happened last game started forward but he switched back to defence.
Given the rain of goals that will probably happen.

      1. think the horse has bolted already – the whole Hawks team look lost … all the positional changes have upset their entire structure … very un-Clarkson like …

  4. Dangerfield didnt fly with the group to Adelaide. Baby watch. Could be precautionary so not starting rumours!

  5. For a No 1 pick, Scully is not lighting up the world on fire. Would he
TU still come good. Clarkson will find a way
TD past his best , already 28yo
Comments what have I missed something?

  6. Far out – Clarkson fast becoming a muppet of a coach … playing Sicily up front, destabilising his backline, players don’t look comfortable … Sicily looks out of place up front as well … if they don’t hurry up and get Sicily down back, this is going to blow out hugely …

    1. Well said, Macca. Actual insanity. One of the best defenders at his disposal and Clarkson thinks “hmm, yep, he should be playing up forward”.

    2. doubt the best coach of the modern era is too concerned about Sicilys SC stats ,
probably gna play him permanently back next year ,
this years shot , probably just lett’n him have some fun up fwd atm

      1. Still a slight chance for finals, why would he stuff around? Just losing it as a coach lately. Trying to be too clever.

      2. PJ – I seriously doubt you know much about this game – it’s nothing to do with SC stats – the entire Hawks team structure has been destabilised – the players look lost in each of their roles … if Sicily hasn’t been training all year in the forwards, he isn’t as ‘switched on’ for what and where he should be playing / moving … nor are the players around him or those trying to get the ball into the FWD line.

Outside of that, their backline looks lost without Sicily there … he reads the ball better than most defenders and has the ability to close down opposition forwards and so on … the other defenders around him have confidence and know what is happening as well .. the decision by Clarkson is a really dumb move … on all fronts … and if the Swans utterly flog them, it will do far more harm then good …

        1. that said – lets see how the Hawks players respond … maybe they will step up … but thus far they look ‘a bit all over the place’ … and they miss Sicily good disposals coming out of defence too …

i don’t know much about footy
i certainly wouldn’t know that the hawks season in gone
or that clarko is in trial & error prep mode for next season
& i certainly wouldn’t know that the lower you finish this season on the ladder , the easier the draw is the next year

          5

          3
            1. i wouldn’t say that , but if that’s your view
              trying new things
that’s what teams do when they’re hit by injuries & season over

              2. It is still 7 points difference at half time. Not really that bad. The genius of Clarko is that they are being smashed in the game but they keep on bombing the ball forward , and the leaderbord says a different story.

        3. I disagree Macca. Coaches like Clarkson know a little bit more than we do. He had his game plan but the Swans are being absolutely ruthless tonight. Thats what we forget. He didnt change it at quarter time because he wants to see how it would still work. The Swans are just everywhere at the moment. Sicily at the back may not change much. I dont think they can sustain it for 4 quarters but it is good stuff to watch.

          1. The Hawks are in 12th position, with a far better % than Richmond currently in 8th. They have a far better % than Swans, who are on the same score. In front of them is a Brisbane that are looking shaky again … and you think it makes sense to swap his entire team structure around?? As Darwin said above, they are still, at this stage, a very realistic chance of making the finals … pretty sure their fans, sponsors, etc would want to see them make finals …

            1. fyi hawks have the toughest run home

good thing about being a hawks supporter
our success isn’t measured over 1 year

              1. And the great thing about being a Carlton supporter is that our success is measured over a previous century. 😉

  10. Traded in llyod and buddy this week.
If llyod doesn’t ton up I’m going to be really cheesed off. Watched him slut it up all year and haven’t had him. Negative type of trade in a way as he is in so many teams but a guy who is going at 116 average in the backline is a bit of a must have.

  13. That’s the way clarko…put one of your most creative players up fwd on a postage stamp ground where he can have little effect. Don’t you know how important sc is too many of us ???

    1. if his role stays like this though, then yes, he goes out and you a better off keeping a B Smith type … this is a joke thus far … he has no idea how to play this forward role, giving away frees … not generally getting anywhere near the footy … no real efforts either …

    1. Clarkson dreaming that Sicily will do good in the forward keep him in defense that is where he will do good. Now i just wasted a trade if he is kept in the forward line…

    1. Sorry, part frustration, part trolling! I just can’t work out what Sicily’s still fwd? Jeez, they could be in front with him rebounding out of the back line.
