Game Chat – Sydney v West Coast

Written by Thommo on June 9 2019

Where and when: SCG, Sunday June 9th, 3.20pm AEST

What it means for Sydney: Another massive test. The Swans have taken it right up to Collingwood and Geelong over the past fortnight, but the Premiers are in menacing form, and an upset would be huge going into the bye.

What it means for West Coast: Back in the top four after five straight wins, the Eagles must keep rolling to stay in touch with the best teams. They realise just how important it will be to secure home finals and they’re right in the hunt again.

The stat: Superstar Sydney forward Lance Franklin booted 8.1 and 2.5 in his team’s two wins over West Coast last year and he’ll need to be the difference again if the Swans are to go into the mid-season bye with a boil over.

The match-up: Tom McCartin v Jeremy McGovern

The young Swan is a fierce competitor and must make sure the Eagles’ three-time All Australian defender is accountable inside Sydney’s forward 50. McGovern (No. 28 on the AFL Player Ratings) is a huge presence and sets up plenty of West Coast attacks with his reading of the game from half back.

It’s a big week for: Dane Rampe

The local boy who was overlooked at multiple drafts before the Swans threw him a rookie lifeline, has turned himself into one of the game’s best defenders and an All Australian. Rampe’s 150th game will give his teammates even more motivation to knock off the visitors.

Thommo’s Tip: Sydney by 12 points

    1. It would of been nice if Freo released that info before the Rolling lockout started on Friday . Wasted trade for me

  1. Good tip. Couldn’t decide so went with both across my two tipping comps. Head says WCE, but without Hurn who was held accountable in this fixture last year, it should be close. Only game today, so I’m watching

  2. I’m excited for this game. Think it’s the game of round. Don’t think pies/demons will be much of a game.

  4. Stars have aligned for us to seize second spot: Tigers, Lions and GWS all lost.

Will be tough without Hurn and Yeo, and we have a poor history at the SCG. Also rate the Swans despite their position on the ladder; got close against Collingwood and the Cats. They won’t roll over easily.

Hoping our system and talented list prevails. We’ll see…

    1. Agree with you GB. Swans could’ve easily won at least another 3-4 had injuries not been an issue. Buddy, JPK , McVeigh all rotating on and off the list. Heeney with issues until mid season. Should be a cracker today!
      Caaaaarn the Swans!

    FINAL INTERCHANGES
Sydney: James Rose, Daniel Menzel, Jackson Thurlow, Ollie Florent

    1. Bye players function as normal loophole players, become “DNPs” when the last game of the round starts.

    1. agreed. Hewett and De Goey best lockdowns going around. They still manage 20+ possessions themselves.

  7. OF COURSE I’m happy Kennedy is kicking goals, keeping us in the game and continuing to assert himself as of the great key forwards of the last decade, BUT I would love if one or two of those goals could go to Darling, who I somehow still have in my team.

        Try that.

        1. try disconnecting your WIFI on your computer only
( not on the router )
then go to the page you want ,
your computer will offer to fix connection problem for you ( click yes )
it will auto reconnect to your WIFI & should fix the problem with your web page also
auto fix works a lot better when computers are disconnected from WIFI for some reason

  9. Absence of Hurn and Barrass has been exploited really well by Sydney today, Reid and Buddy are killing us. Need Hurn back there directing traffic and Barrass locking down Buddy.

  10. interesting difference in the full fwd line scoring that Q
buddy gets 17 pts for a down field free kick & set shot goal 30 out
JJK looses 7 pts without touching the footy over the last 10 mins

  12. someone get kennedy some ski gloves for his cold hands
the only time WC were competitive in this game ,
was when they used him in the 2nd Q
not sure why they avoid using him so much this year

    1. it was bizzare, darling had him short on the lead but he went long to ryan who got outmarked o_O

      1. i love watching him when ever WC play
traditional full fwds are great to watch
looks like the mids & 1/2 fwds prefer to avoid him & do the quick bomb in
rather than waiting for the fwd line to open up through dummy leads & for him to lead into space
what ever it is , when WC mids are shut down , they struggle to score

  15. Well Heeney tonned up for me and Darling didn’t mega suck. So that’s a plus.
And Rotham beat my other rookies low score of 10. So I’m claiming that’s a win.

The lack of downgrade rookies are really making the bye rounds hard :S

    1. I traded him in round 7-9ish, hoping he’d be a late in at some stage, get a big score and no one else would have him.

He was a late in but… not so much on the big score.

    2. The depth at GWS is ridiculous. As well as Hately, they picked up Caldwell and O’Halloran last year. And don’t forget Bonar is there as well. I suspect clubs will be coming in for Bonar in the trade period as well as Patton. Then they will use the trade currency to load up again in the draft. They really have drafted well.
