Game Chat – Sydney vs Hawthorn

Written by Thommo on May 26 2017

Venue: SCG at 7:50pm AEST

LAST FIVE MEETINGS
R17, 2016, Hawthorn 11.9 (75) d Swans 10.10 (70) at the SCG
R9, 2016, Swans 10.9 (69) d Hawthorn 7.13 (55) at the MCG
R16, 2015, Hawthorn 23.8 (146) d Swans 7.15 (57) at ANZ Stadium
R8, 2015, Swans 11.7 (73) d Hawthorn 9.15 (69) at the MCG
GF, 2014, Hawthorn 21.11 (137) d Swans 11.8 (74) at the MCG

Game notes: Any clash between these two powerhouse teams brings plenty of eyes and expectation, but this time it’s for a very different reason, with the winner likely to keep their finals hopes alive. The Swans were written off when they started the year 0-6, and the Hawks weren’t much better at 1-5, but with a few sides above them faltering, and some key players returning to form and fitness, things are looking slightly more positive for John Longmire’s team. The injury bug has hit Hawthorn more recently and they gave up a big lead to go down to Collingwood last week, but with a good record in Sydney, the visitors will come with hope of an upset. Finding enough goals to win it though, while trying to tame superstar Swan Lance Franklin, could be a hurdle too large for the Hawks to get over.

Thommo’s Tip: Hawthorn by 50 points.

While we do our best to update posts with end of quarter scores, we aren’t always online so if you have access to the scores and see they haven’t gone into the Comments section of this post, the Community would love it if you could help us out.

  1. Buddy could go BANG tonight, if Dangerfield didn’t play last night I would of been tempted to whack the old ( VC ) on him!

Thommo, loving the optimism mate 🙂

    1. And Grundy is going to get 2 weeks for an elbow to Hodge (off the ball).

Probably no different to Sheldon’s the other week.

    2. Not good for those who have him full-stop.

I missed the incident where it happened – was it an opposition player’s fault?

        1. I still want someone suspended over this. A week for every 10 SuperCoach points I lose as a result of Lloyd not playing.

          1. If you don’t lose a player on 5 points in the first quarter for the rest of the game, do you even supercoach? 🙁

  4. Gee. I had 3 defenders trade targets this week. Pittard/Lloyd were two of them, looks like I dodged them like a champion although I am now wondering if I just hold my trade this week :-S

  6. Is Parker officially no longer SC relevant with the emergence of Heeney, Papley etc? Almost unsighted that 2nd qtr.

    1. It looks to me like he doesn’t have a role. His best role is probably in the thick of it and then get out, but the other guys around him seem to be faster so they’re the ones breaking out.

They don’t tend to use him as a field kicker either.

3 kicks, 7 handballs and only 2 tackles for the half. May still be carrying an injury, but is well down on lasts years amazing start.

  10. That should end the Swan’s chances of making finals but if they want to keep improving and letting their stars score even better it’d be appreciated.

Strong last quarter from Heeney was good to see, Buddy got 5 (105 almost seems low for how good his game was) and Kennedy and Hannebery both went 115+.

  11. Callum Mills will have a few sleepless nights about that clanger with two minutes to go. Scores level, has the ball 50 metres out unmarked….and shanks it straight to the only defender between him and the goal. Hawthorn take it down the other end and Roughy kicks the sealer.
    Hard lessons.

  12. Thankyou Burgoyne. Compensated for last weeks dismissal performance (42) and repaid my faith for starting him.

  13. How many points did Roughy get for that goal ?Not as many as Danger , have got them both and had Danger as vc so not complaining , but his score seemed to jump a lot with his goal.

      1. Yes , big reward for a mark and winning goal from outside 50! I will take the extra from Danger and balance with the unders for Roughy. Very happy for the big Rough though.

      2. Something odd with the scores in that last qtr. I mean how did Titch go backwards? He initiated that goal with a great handball. Perhaps some form of pre endgame scaling?

        1. No, I was a slow decrease, with occasional moves up as well. He wasn’t getting a lot of the pill and I know there was at least one free against. But it was still weird.

    1. I’ve got em both so not complaining either, it’s just really odd that one got rewarded ridculously higher than the other
