Game Chat – West Coast v Adelaide

Written by Father Dougal on August 11 2019

Where and when: Optus Stadium, Sunday, August 11, 3.20pm AWST

What it means for West Coast: The reigning premiers are in great form, having won six of their past seven games, but can’t afford a slip-up if they want a top-two finish and an all-important home qualifying final.

What it means for Adelaide: This is a season-defining game for the Crows. Last weekend’s win over St Kilda covered some of the cracks, but they must take a big scalp to cling on to a finals berth.

The stat: The Eagles have turned Optus Stadium into a fortress in a short space of time. They have an imposing 19-5 record at the venue and have won eight of their 10 games this year. The match-up: Jeremy McGovern v Taylor Walker

The All Australian defender, ranked 28th overall in the Official AFL Player Ratings, will attempt to zone off Crows co-captain Walker (119th overall) and take intercept marks at every chance possible. Walker’s challenge is to make McGovern accountable.

It’s a big week for: Luke Brown

The Crows’ best small defender will have a huge job on his hands trying to contain the likes of Liam Ryan, Willie Rioli and Jack Petruccelle creating havoc at ground level. Brown will probably start on Ryan, but will need plenty of help from his fellow defenders.

Father Dougal’s Tip: Hard to imagine the Eagles losing. West Coast by 25

    1. Lol, TR. Eagles take precedence over my SC team, so I don’t mind if Hutchings does a number on Sloane.

  1. Pls be heavily tagged Sloane to make up for my boys Boak and Neale getting the closest checking for the year on the worst possible weekend. Need a sub 75 score.

    1. Hope so, AS. If we could just win a centre f*cking clearance we could put this rabble down.

It’s alright. Regroup, readjust and come out hot in the 2nd half.

      1. GD – why the eff are your boys not tagging sloane?????? sheesh … get Hutchings on him … he will cost me my H2H in Contribs league with Catta!!! (of course that is more important than real footy!!)

        1. Yeah, not sure.

Would prefer him on M. Crouch though, who is (for once) using the ball really well. Should have Hutch on Crouch and Yeo match up tight on Sloane. Simpson likely makes an adjustment of the nature, you’d think.

    1. Hopefully no-one did but I can’t comprehend the allure in sideways trades with 2-4 rounds to go for uninjured premiums that are not drastically underperforming.

      1. I’m with you Adam. There’ll be a few more injuries this week and next. Hold those trades til prelims at least!

        1. Laughable that anyone was contemplating trading either out as I assume there would have been more pressing issues either on-field or off-field.

Marshall gave me a fright today as I used my remaining trades to grab him last week which pushed Hoff to F7 and Mundy to F6 (F6 and M8 this round due to J Kelly still missing).

            1. What about your bench depth as you potentially could have grabbed an Andrews/Simpson/Stewart type this week or next if you had sufficient funds to loop Sicily.

  2. That’ll be Sloane done- and with him, my chances of 2500.

All the matters is the Eagles win though.

  3. I traded in Hurn for Logue to loophole Sicily and Stewart… benched Stewart instead of Laird. 120 sitting on the bench with laird and hurn combining for 100.

      1. at this rate, I swapped out B Smith for Hurn as a POD against Catta – with Sloane down I had a 14 point led – Hurn’s absence now is going to cost me the match … if i’d left it alone I would have won … is he even on the field??? No comments from commentators?? His score hasn’t move since before 3 qtr …

    1. Adelaide were very clean with their entries. Hit targets, didn’t kick deep and often went in from 70m~ to 40m~ targets.

Add to that how we adjusted after HT (before which Hurn was doing fine): you had Barass and Schofield going up in the contests v Crows key FWDs, with Gov rotating between the dead zone and the deepest FWD and Sheppard waiting for the receive as he’s quicker and plays tighter to the wing- there wasn’t much for guys like Jetta and Hurn to do.

  5. The way this scoring system works is absolute BS with the scaling – Sloane was on 72 when injured … he’s now on 80 … whilst being off the field and earning no stats … such BS!!

      1. nah – it’s the scaling process … it’s been going up and down depending on the scores by other players …

        1

        3
      1. that’s my point though AS … scaling should not exist. Players should just get paid what they earn.

Hurn was on the field, he scored points at the end … which received nothing … its BS and such a rubbish way to score … it should simply be award the players what they actually get … no BS subjective scaling … and as you know, I have said this many times this year and other years ..

Scores are up now on the site … I have actually lost by 5 points … due to his score going up throughout the second half in 1s, while not on field … he went from 72 to 80 … cruel way to lose.

        1. I’m sure you’ve been on the right end of a few too Macca.
I don’t really like the way it’s so subjective either and it makes more sense to me that players get what they get without scaling. Some games might score 4000 points and some 2000 – but it’s always been this way.
In weird way it kinda makes it interesting to see how it plays out too.
I just think you’re banging your head against the wall letting it shit you.

  6. Why is this only the 2nd game Fogarty has played this season?
It’s not like they’re a young side, they could have carried a young developing forward and got some games into him
