Game Chat – West Coast v Geelong

Written by Father Dougal on April 8 2018

WHERE AND WHEN:  Optus Stadium, Sunday, April 8, 2.40pm AWST

SUMMARY: The Eagles return to Optus Stadium buoyed by a thumping victory on the road against the Western Bulldogs and will be desperate to keep the momentum going by notching a historic first win at their new home. West Coast has received a shot in the arm from playing four debutants in the opening two rounds, and Liam Ryan (three goals), Daniel Venables (three) and Jake Waterman (two) hit the scoreboard last round to help cover Josh Kennedy’s ongoing absence. Youthful enthusiasm is important, but the Eagles will be heavily reliant on their prime movers through midfield – especially star ruckman Nic Naitanui – to quell the influence of Geelong’s trio of champions Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett. If the Eagles can break even around the contest and in the supply battle, then a forward line led by in-form duo Jack Darling and Mark LeCras has the firepower to worry the Cats, who will come out snarling after an epic one-point loss to Hawthorn on Easter Monday.

LAST FIVE TIMES

R13, 2017, West Coast 11.17 (83) d Geelong 10.10 (70) at Subiaco Oval
R7, 2016, Geelong 18.15 (123) d West Coast 12.7 (79) at GMHBA Stadium
R9, 2015, West Coast 16.24 (120) d Geelong 10.4 (64) at Subiaco Oval
R4, 2014, Geelong 16.11 (107) d West Coast 4.8 (32) at GMHBA Stadium
R21, 2013, Geelong 16.11 (107) d West Coast 6.5 (41) at Subiaco Oval

Father Dougal’s Tip: Hard to see the Eagles holding of the Cats, even at home. Cats by 12

  1. Final teams for #AFLEaglesCats:

Mark Hutchings replaces Liam Duggan (hamstring) for the @WestCoastEagles. Scott Selwood replaces Rhys Stanley.

Blicavs & Ratugolea will share the ruck duties. NicNat/Lycett will have a field day.

  3. Hmm that trading out Lycett continues to hurt.

It’s like watching an ex date a string of footy players.

Or possibly even half a team on a one night stand.

  4. We (Geelong) are not even a top 4 team let alone premiership contenders.

Completely disguisting whats being dished out to start the year.

ruckmen by the name of Z Smith would be handy wouldn’t it scotty?

    1. I called it at the start of the season – wouldn’t surprise me if we missed out on finals this year. The alarm bells for me were the 20+ point leads we gave away in the JLT series and also the start of the season.

  7. Pretty hard to watch. Geelong on par with Saint Kilda at the moment. Definitely missing our key back men.

    1. You deserve to win. Hanley injured, Hall tagged into oblivion by a 3rd gamer, Duncan and JJK injured on the bench!

    1. How bad is it looking? I already have no bench…

Ryan did what I expected and snatched a few.
      Yeo… is he even playing?
Kelly put something respectable up at least.

      Stinker of a week.

  10. Pretty shattering being a geelong fan right now. Disgraceful first half cost us the game in the end.

But to have Ablett pull his string hurts along with Cocky and Guthrie leaving 1 interchange left for a whole quarter.

Looking like a grim season up ahead with no full back for at least another month and Chris Scott clearly being an idiot right now by refusing to play a ruckmen which we have in the twos.

    1. Agreed. Really testing the depth of the team. I still don’t know how Parsons gets a game. Would much prefer anyone else.

Geelong trying to play only 40 mins of games, not good enough long enough.

      1. Ive said for years as long as Scotts coach we arent gonna have success. How we continue to get dominated in inside 50’s is unbelievable. How can we play so poorly then magically switch it on.

Parsons isn’t great but we genuinly have no one better than him at the moment. If Zac Smith isn’t playing this week ill be absolute fuming. 2 weeks in a row their ruckmen has killed us.

Unlucky with injuries but at the end of the day theres no one to blame but ourselves

      2. Also agreed. Parsons and c guthrie continue to disappoint. In guthries defence last week the coach thought it would be a good idea to match him up to roughead twice his size. Go figure

        1. Think you mean z guthrie 🙂
His still young and only way his gonna get better is to play.

No point blaming the young kids because its not their fault and need games.

  11. Totally useless stat, this is only the 5th time in VFL / AFL history that there have been two 50,000+ crowds on the same day in a home and away round.
