Gary Ablett Junior 2013

Written by Motts on March 27 2013

We’ve been asking this question ever since the site started in 2009 (it was our second ever post): Will you start the year with Gaz in your team?

Personally, I’m going around him this year. Took Swan and the extra $65k will go towards that all important first trade-up.

I may regret the decision but hey, you gotta try something different every now and again!

What are you doing?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  2. Am struggling with this at the moment. Took him out last night and replaced him with Swan, then changed him back in a couple of hours later. I don’t think he will maintain a 130+ average particularly if he is going to spend time away from the midfield and hence the 740k is expensive. But GAJ is capable of some huge scores which I would hate to miss out on. And he is reliable.
    In at the moment.

  3. No GAJ. Pick him up later. He missed a couple of rounds early last year and then dropped to mid $600s when he came back. Pretty sure I’ll get that opportunity again in the first half of the season.

  5. Dropping GAJ to someone like Andrew Swallow allows me to upgrade a defensive rookie in Vlastuin to Newman. Still not convinced it’s worth it though.

  6. yeah , having gazza or not having gazza that,s a bloody hard decision ?
me personally gazza is a lock . I dont think gazza,s point scoring will be effected too much even if he plays more of a chapman role .

  7. I’ll be starting with Ablett. Partly because I’m a firm believer that you should have who you think will be the top scoring player starting in your team, and partly because GAJ is an idol to me. Absolutely love him.

  8. Have thought about it all day and cannot mount a case as to why I should start without Ablett. The argument is that his price will ‘inevitably’ come down as his scores may be reduced with more forward line time and you can upgrade to him later on with some fattened up rookies. However, I really can’t see GAJ dropping below $600k this season (his lowest price tag in 2012 after a knee injury). Ah, you might say this is a massive $140k price drop from his current $740k! However, something else that is ‘inevitable’ is that other midfield premiums will drop by the same amount, if not more. You just have to look at someone like Matthew Priddis last season, when concussion reduced one of his games to a single quarter, his price dipped to $470k. Marc Murphy dropped to $466k after smashing his shoulder against Dangerfield. They will be the type of players I target for midfield upgrades. We are bound to be offered similar bargains at ~$450-$480k for elite midfielders mid-season, at $140k+ discounts from their Rd1 price. I’d rather make the savings on them and have all Ablett’s captaincy points in the meantime. I rest my case.

  9. I traded out Ablett last week for Swan and then used the extra cash to upgrade Lucas to Hannebery. Now I’m logging back in to change it back.

This is by far the hardest decision. Without Ablett my midfield is: Swan, Pendlebury, Dangerfield, Kennedy, Fyfe, Hannebery, O’Meara and Wines.

I also plan to pick him up as soon as possible, based on rookie prices increases quickly.

  10. If you want to upgrade Lucas, turn him into Brent Moloney at $362k and keep Ablett. (I assume you have a fair bit of coin left in the bank if you can get from Lucas to Hannebery with only $65k saved from Ablett > Swan)

  11. You get what you paid for. No way am I stingy enough to pass up ANY of the top 3 (Ablett, Swan and Pendles) because no one else will score close to them.

  12. You have to be asking yourselves:

How much luck is involved in leaving Ablett out and winning the competition?

Let’s be realistic… we’re all in it to win our leagues after the horse has bolted in the early rounds. League winners pick Ablett from the start.

  13. he has to drop off eventually. to be worthy of his 740k price he has to score up near 140 each and every week. something that when spending a lot of time in the midfield, he is very capable of doing, but when youre in the fwd line, thats much tougher. i definitely think swan and pendlebury will eventually take over him as the top scorers, but ablett will still be good. i think he will drop about 80k down to about 660 or 650 and be a much better pickup.

  14. I’ve been toying with this problem for a while now. This is where my head is at:

    – Start with Ablett. It is the number 1 rule of SuperCoach for a reason and I just can’t bring myself to ignore it;
    – I get two weeks to look at him. IF he is playing a lot more forward and IF this is significantly adversely affecting his scoring then I will burn a trade, downgrade him to a gun who is playing well and use the extra cash to either (a) upgrade a mid-pricer to a star or (b) upgrade a rookie to a mid-pricer who has started well.

I think the risk and negative result of having to burn a trade if he is poor is less than the risk of starting without GAJ.

  15. The way i see it GAJ will play well it is inevitable but to hold up his price tag he has to be averaging upward of 135 which is tough even for the great one. which means one dud game he will drop a fair bit and i will be there to pick him up.
All the while i am able turn darren jolly into maric with the spare change.
I will also have pendles jobe swan and cotchin all averaging about the same as ablett and maric getting close to it. so i think that getting GAJ in round 7or so is the best option for me
tl:dr others can average the same while GAJ loses money pick him up in round 7or8

  16. The way I see it, if you want him, buy him now and dont waste 2 trades getting him back in later just to save a few $$$. Even if he plays up forward he will still score well – thats why we call him the little master! Im starting with him and locking him in all the way – we have this discussion every year and he still ends up on top!
