Goal line review system?

Written by Big Sexy on May 1 2013

What do you think of the goal line review?  It’s getting tons of coverage around the traps, and after a very average weekend when a stupid umpire stepped over the line and into the field of play and may have cost the Tiges the game after the ball hit his leg, and didn’t even call for a review, then Smedts kicks a goal on Sat night, and the ump says it hit the post, and not only was it wrong, they didn’t even review it (as Billy B said, “He was robbed” ba-ba-boom).  What to do?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. Hi, got a couple of suggestions:
    1. A score is awarded if the ball breaks the goal line, not fully crosses the line. This could allow the umpire to stand back or at least not have to stand in the field of play. (they could remove some of the padding behind the post to help the umpire sight the goal line).
    2. Play continues if the ball hits the posts (as in rugby, soccer). An example of how this adds to the excitment of the game occurred in the broncos NRL game on the weekend when the ball bounced on the cross bar several times before falling into the in goal area. If the ball hits the posts on its way through it would be a goal. ( no need for reviews or cameras).
These changes would speed up the game ( less reviews) and make it more exciting to watch (and play too!). Your thoughts?

  2. Why don’t the goal umpires have a camera on their hat or person, seems the logical option to me and cheap too.

  3. Why dont we just go back to how it has been for the last 100 years, yes goal umpires will make mistakes why should their mistakes be any differnt from the field umpires week to week.
I understand that people will say that a mistake by a goal umpire could determine the outcome of the game. I have seen games decided from field umpires giving 50m penalties on things that are allowed all game then blown in the last minute. Every game has the element of human error, even the players make mistakes that cost games.

  4. Its not Ideal for the goal umpires to straddle the goal line, but it does give the ideal view point, and this is how they are taught to umpire. So this quote may be a little harsh on the said umpire Big Sexy “when a stupid umpire stepped over the line and into the field of play” (just doing his job as he was taught to).
Although I do agree that a review should have been called (Its in place, use it)

Spend money, develop real technology and get it right at any cost.

  5. Don’t believe in to many rule changes but this one has to be done properly. Umpires do make mistakes but you would hate to loose a grand final with a bad decision like the freo and rich game. Do it properly and put camera’s on both goal posts. It’s a big business now with gambling etc. so we have to do this right.

  6. I think the actual venues that make a good whack of money having AFL games at their grounds, should be forced to fit appropriate cameras & get it right immediately.

On another note, I’m getting absolutely sick & tired of hearing Carro & Mark Robinson talk about negative stuff about the AFL & the game itself all the bloody time, you’d think the game is in a bad state of affairs……if you believed every bit of BS in the papers.

I understand negative articles sells papers but come on media, pull your heads in & talk about some of the positive stuff in the game once in a while!

Thumbs up…………….Your sick of hearing these daily negative reports
Thumbs down………..There only doing there job, leave them alone Catta

  7. Spend the money, get it right.

I’m a big NBA fan and whilst the last 5 minutes of a game can take 30 minutes with reviews… they get it right. No one is complaining, no scores are in question… even out of bounds plays are addressed. It’s sensible, accepted and works.

I know attrition and the ability to maintain work rates for 4 quarters is part of the talent mix for teams but a quick on field time out could lead to some great leadership and better on the fly adjustments from onfield captains etc.

  8. Something’s got to be done to improve the system. That decision on Friday night could be the difference between Richmond coming ninth and………….ninth!

  9. Forget the technology – just have two goal umpires at each goal line. They can then position themselves correctly and cover multiple angles. Easy to implement at all AFL grounds as well.

  10. Look the way I see it, the umpire was caught with his pants down in the Freo and Rich game.
Dude should have been behind the line, that’s all there is too it.

As for the technology, what is the point in having it at all if the officials aren’t going to use it?
And if they do decide to use it, the game shouldn’t be slowed to a crawl waiting for the final verdict.
