Greg Broughton

by Motts on April 10, 2012

A lot of angst over the weekend from those that currently hold Greg Broughton. This morning’s poll lays out some of the options. If you don’t see one you like, feel free to put in Comments who you’re thinking about.

For those that don’t have GB in their team, what advice would you give if you did?

Im holding onto him.
Im happy to burn a couple of trades to pick up some cows ive missed but im not going to burn a trade on a defender who’s had a couple of low weeks.
Defenders more than anyone this year look like there going to be up & down.

Im happy with my start to the season, im getting scores I expected, im happy with my position so Im not going to try and fix something that isnt broken.

Although it is tempting…

I traded for greed last year, chasing points…it rarely works out.

I gave him a punishment trade last night just to show him who is boss (worked for Lake) but I think I’m going to stand by him. It’s hard though because if he has another 2-3 bad weeks your basically stuck with him. They play some pretty average teams in the next 5 weeks though (Bris, port and GC if memory serves). Will stand by him and hope he gets unleashed.

I don’t have him but you have to stand by your man, we here at SCT land have the golden rule of no sideway trades of premiums unless LTI. Here is your classic case.
Maybe Greggy will do a B Lake we put the blow torch under him last week and those who stuck fat were rewarded with 110 this week. Hopefully this post will provide him with impetus to lift.
I also remember last year breaking the golden rule when Brent Harvey stunk it up in round 2 I traded him for J Brown who went and got his face rearranged. I’d burnt 2 trades for no good reason.

They are playing the Lions over in the west. Might get a run through the middle so don’t trade him out, he WILL rack them up this week. Same goes for Pavlich, if your having doubts on his performances, don’t. You will be kicking yourselves.

With Duffman getting injured, might open the door for Greg to increase his productivity resulting in an increase in SC points, Hold.

Unless Broughton plays consistently in the midfield not sure he will improve his scores by much. I am trading to C Dempsey and then using the $229K to upgrade a mid fielder. S Selwood at $446K is the standout midfielder for WCE so far and his price is about to go up especially as WCE are playing GWS this weekend. Broughtons price will crash unless he pulls one out of the bag in Round 3

If you pull the trigger on Broughton this week, Ebert ( port ) might just be a better option at a similar price as SSelwood IMO Macca!

I had high hopes for Broughton becoming an elite mid fielder this season. Enter Ross Lyon and his trademark dour brand of negating football and Broughton’s SC scores begin to smell, he’ll be a very good footballer for Freo this season, but not a good SC points scorer IMO… He’s gone.

The poll currently indicates a leaning towards a Broughton -> Dempsey trade. The pros are obvious – immediate cash-in-hand, a better scoring record (2 games is an extremely small sample size, though), a massive difference in price fluctuations in the coming weeks – but I wonder whether people are considering the cons – 1 trade (=gold!) burnt on a premium who is not injured (that I am aware of), bringing in a player whose reliability is questionable (did anyone, other than me, bring in Grimes last year after he smashed out some impressive scores, only to see him snap? Or, I think it was the year b4, Waite: same circumstances, same result), trading out a ‘keeper’ to bring in someone who will more-than-likely need to be upgraded (2 trades to accomplish a keeper -> a keeper), the fact that Lake turned things around in 1 week, Broughton’s history of getting things back on track (coaching strategy permitting). Let’s not forget that SC is a sadistically fluctuating beast, the season is long and we only have so many trades that rise in value as the season progresses. How many times have you wished for just 1 more trade at the end of the season? Spare a thought for the 7,216 coaches who traded out Lake.

Just traded Broughton for Hurn. Still in two minds to keep the trade. Reverse button is my friend at the moment. Have scored close to 2200 for the past 2 rounds with Broughton in. Not too sure if I am being greedy or should look long term. I know trades are gold but he is doing my head in.

Thinking about going him to Dempsey and then Dempsey should rise about 150,000 by about round 8-9 and then BANG a premium ‘in-form’ defender comes in. With this I will get the most ‘in-form’ defender PLUS about 150,000 extra cash. Thoughts?

I don’t have him and would usually be saying people should Hold… However, I don’t actually rate him as a premium and as such give the advice to trade him out. If you truly rate as a premium, then you should hold. If not, I wouldn’t get Dempsy as he is also not a keeper (but will go up in price in short term), so if I was trading I’d go with Mottsys great white hope Rance, as scoring well, a keeper and will also go up in price…. Looking very solid… Good call on that one Mottsy boy.

I don’t have Broughton so my SC issues are elsewhere but a few thoughts:

* Dempsey’s 2009 season
100+ scores = 3 (high of 126)
-75 scores = 11

* Dempsey’s 2010 season
100+ scores = 4 (high of 120)
-75 scores = 9

* Dempsey’s 2011 season (discounting his knee injury game)
61, 79, 51

POINT?!
Well, his prior history shows that he is an inconsistent performer. It would be highly speculative to suggest that he could maintain his current scoring.

That said, Broughton’s scoring should decrease even more with Barlow likely to step up from the vest and Mundy to come back into the team too. And then there’s Morabito and Neale that are probably in the mix to squeeze into the midfield too!!!!

So maybe trade Broughton, just saying i don’t know if Dempsey’s the right man for the job.

Shaw will be fine, the main reason everyone’s concerned with Broughton is that a change in coach has brought a role change for Dempsey, which highly negates his weekly scoring.

Shaw has a definite role of a rebounding defender in a very good team. His average scores are not of too great a concern. He’ll come good I think. The main concern with Broughton is how often he will have low scoring tagging roles that both Ross Lyon and Mark Harvey previously assigned him.
I,m still undecided which way to go with him

keep in mind dempsey hasn’t played against any big teams, but his price will sky-rocket anyway and by R4 or R5 he will be around the 450k mark, so you could trade him in for a premo anyway

Funny how everyone is basing their theories on Broughton having to play in the midfield to score well.
In 2009/10 he averaged 98 playing almost exclusively as a BP or HBF, moving more into the midfield for a couple of games late in ’10 to cover Barlow.
Last year when he moved more into the midfield his average was down to 92.

I can’t stand it no more!!!
Broughton gone, if i’m putting 500k+ on the table for a defender i expect 90-100′s… Broughton may get a couple games where he is free’d up and gets a run off half back or a chance to push into the mid, but i’m still gonna know that he has every chance next week of pushing out a solid 50 thanks to FURL…
RISK V REWARD, and the risk is to high… I couldn’t care if he goes out and raps up a 100 points next week and have you all laugh at me for my ignorance in trading him, because i’ll be ready to give it straight back the week after that when FURL decides he’s needed to play another shut down role.

Dollhouse will be playing in the guts all year from what I can gather and his average of 100 over the last two games was against some pretty good opposition. I do like the cut of the young man’s jib too. Always up and about, knows how to get himself involved and loves getting his nose over the pill.

The Tomahawk did cross my mind a fair bit last night as well but I just can’t trust the KPPs.

Golby to Dempsey (I just can’t bring myself to trust Lake and Bower JS is an issue)
Mumford to 211. (Back injuries or potentials scare me a little and 211 looks like he is going to be the MAN again this year)

What Ya Mean April 10, 2012 at 4:36 pm

broughton should come good only prob is he will lose a bundle in value after next week. so only prob is if he doesnt come good u will be stuck with a player u paid alot for who u could sell for a bag of rice. either take chance on broughton and save a trade or go for a immediate money maker in dempsey or rance and then trade back in for a new premo. i have broughton to so not sure which option to take myself.

whats everyone opinion on scotland he seems to be over the hill abit, i want to side trade only coz i will be left with only 3 premiums (adcock,BJ, and lids) if i dont side trade. What u think?

Also i think i made a mistake with Boydy from the start, i had better options but went with him only coz he did well for me last year. thinking of getting rid of him now only coz i feel he is not efficient enough for SC. i will have enough cash to get any mid in the comp then, already have ablett, murphy and rockcliff (even though he killed me this week) should i side trade to a stanton or pendles or anyone else for that matter, or just keep onto him. not to keen to downgrade as i think i need atleast 4 premiums in the middle.

Thoughts would be great boys

cheers

Thinking with my heart and not my head. Always gets me in trouble.

Opinions on Burgoyne? This week I’m considering:

Broughton to Burgoyne +31 pts on ave each week
Then in the mids Pav to Murphy + 51.5 pts on ave each week

- Would mean (going by averages) a +82.5 pts per week bonus.
- Would mean burning 2 trades but… I think it’s worth it.
- Would make me feel, if ever so slightly, a little bit like I can send a subtle message #FURL
- Would mean losing my mid/fwd link. I think this year the DPP may not be as important as last year as there are not byes EVERY week?

*Jim Carey voice* somebody stop me!! I.E someone talk me out of it!!

It’d give me the current golden 4 midfield of Pendles, Ablett, NDS, Murphy (Judd very close in pursuit of course). Very tempting.

I’ve done broughton to rance. Going for the cash through value increase vs value drop plus the current price difference. I know trades are gold, but you dont want to miss the boat with the bank. Also, Rance is off to a good start against top 4 contending sides… That should not be under estimated. Rance just might just be on the verge pid making himself a premo! Dempsey doesnt convince me that he’ll sustain based on history, played average opponents, and most of all coming off knee reco.

Thinking of trading Broughton for a mid price player who’s price will rise and then getting rid of a poorly performing forward rookie for another who is going great guns, that way I get 2 players who are scoring better and will inject some cash whilst not copping a few weeks of lower scores and cash disappearing from Broughton’s bank. The downside, 2 trades GAWN……..
