GWS Rookies (The Low-down)

Written by Motts on August 23 2011

Our respect and undying gratitude goes out to Rustee for putting this piece together. Cheers buddy!

Kurt Aylett – A midfielder from NSW if i am not mistaken, don’t know much about this kid but depending on how many AFL current players GWS get then i doubt he will play much in his first year.

Josh Bruce – A KPP usually up front, can kick bags and has a nice pair of hands, may take time to develop though should be like Sam Day this year with fantasy relevents needs time to develop at AFL level. Also dominated youths, being named in the 2009 AA U18 Champs squad on the interchange.

Tomas Bugg – This guy is a decent player in the midfield, but will struggle for games early on. Will be useful however for GWS as a tagger.

Jeremy Cameron- Don’t know much about him.

Alex Carey – The winner of their inaugural TAC Cup teams B&F, one of few players to remain with GWS from that team. Plays in the midfield, good skills overhead and by foot.

Ben Casley – Don’t know much about him.

Steve Clifton – Picked up at the end of last year in the rookie draft after being a revelation for North Ballarat, along with Myles Sewell. Won the JJ Liston Trophy in 2010 along with Shane Valenti. Has been super impressive since joining GWS and should feature in their team for most of next year.

Rhys Cooyou – Don’t know much about him, i believe he was one of the players picked up in the rookie draft.

Sam Darley – Went to my primary school, plays in the middle or at half back. Is tall for a midfielder and don’t be surprised if he plays forward at some stages in matches. Strong hands and very effective with the ball, plays like Brendon Goddard.

Shaun Edwards – Speedy half back, who can have bursts in the middle or on a wing. Smaller body and was one of the best for his state at the 2010 U18 Champs.

Adam Flagg – Again another who i doubt will get much game time unless used as a tagger.

Israel Folau – Well we all know Folau.

Jonathan Giles – Mature aged ruckman, picked up in last years rookie draft after dominating the SANFL, will be a bargain next year, like Zac Smith was. The difference between the two is Giles should be able to last a whole season with his body. Has dominated like Clifton since arriving at the club and the two have formed a formidable partnership.

Tim Golds – Won the Ben Mitchell medal while on tour with the AIS, plays a similar style to Josh Toy, same kind of body also. May get more games then Toy did in his first year, as GWS will lack experience in the back half.

Josh Growden – Don’t know much about him.

Curtley Hampton – Likened to Adam Goodes, plays in the middle or at half forward, fairly tall at 187cm but has a bigger body then some of the other youngsters. Should see a lot of game time and may be a chance for MPP.

Jarrod Harding – Don’t know much about him.

Jack Hombsch – Plays in defence as a medium tall, so would probably mark the 3rd tall forward. Has reasonable hands and spoils pretty well. May not get too many games as he lacks weight for a KPP.

Anthony Miles – This guy will be a DT S#ut, wins loads of the ball as well as cheap possies, the ball seems to always go to him. Dominant in the 2010 NAB U18 champs winning his state’s B&F and making the AA team.

Andrew Phillips – A Tassie boy who just isn’t ready to play AFL, needs to build up his body. Was taken in last years rookie draft as a project ruckman for GWS. Will be surprised if he debuts next year.

Ben Reid – No not the Collingwood one, don’t know a lot about this one though to be honest.

Sam Schulz – Another midfielder from NSW, was very impressed with him before he was picked up GWS after his performances at the U18 Champs back in 2010.

Tim Segrave – Another i don’t know much about.

Dylan Shiel – Forget Coniglio, this guy is better, in the NAB cup earlier this year he and Giles we the stand outs for GWS, at such a young age he is sure to be a future star. Likened to Chris Judd, will be a very good SC player with his skills.

Isiah Stevens – Love this guy, GWS took him in last years rookie draft, can play either on a wing or forward pocket. Has tons of speed to burn and skills to match, body may let him down though.

Jacob Townsend – From memory he plays defence, can’t tell you much more.

Adam Treloar – Joined GWS when Shiels did as both were picked up from the Dandedong Stingrays in the TAC Cup. Plays as a half forward but has burts in the middle one of those, Robbie Gray/ Patty Dangerfield/ Angus Monfries players.

Simon Tunbridge – Don’t know hardly anything about this bloke.

Gerald Ugle- Brother plays for Collingwood as a small forward/back, Gerald is better used as a midfielder and was good through this years NAB cup, makes up for his height in body strength, very good skills add to his game.

Mark Whiley – Should play as a medium back same sort of player as Hombsch, but a bit smaller.

Damien Williams – Good player but lacks weight, will probably play as a small back if he gets games, though he is one of those players that seem bigger then they are with his marking ability, the way Milen seems to play at FF.

Nathan Wilson – Very good player again that lacks weight, which will probably be his downfall in his first year, with him being a midfielder.

  1. Kurt Aylett did his ACL 2 weeks ago and will miss a fair chunk of next year…but was expected to play and be a gun!

  3. Top work Rustee, great info. I was lucky enough to help them out when they came up to Darwin recently to take on the Thunder. My 2 cents worth:

Jeremy Cameron was impressive, great hands and took 3 or 4 pack marks from memory. Looked to be a key position player in the making.

Sam Schulz was another who they held in high regard. Big leadership qualities. Not sure about 1st grade potential though, might be in the ‘Mav Weller’ mould and captain the ressies.

Luke Aylett was super impressive in the back half, often taking kick ins and that ‘quarter-back’ type role we’ve seen from Deledio and Hodge in the past.

Giles and Shiel great combination in the middle and better size about them. Should be popular fantasy picks next year I would think.

Ben Reid I think is the brother of Sam who plays for the Bulldogs. Looked to have good skills but needs time to develop his body size.

Shaun Edwards and Curtly Hampton are both local NT boys and both played well in front of their home crowds. Curtly will definitely play senior footy next year while Shaun may take a bit more time. Both are highly regarded in NT circles.

As an inaugural member I’ll be following with interest so will keep you posted about any inside rumours/information. Carn the Giants!!!

  4. Josh Growden broke his leg in Sept so wont see to much big time action. Nathan Wilson is super quick but Jeremy cameron is the one to watch. Jack homsch is slight but a great engine and amazing leap. cant wait to see izzy- complete new AFl body and showed already to be an accurate kick
