Hawks v Bears v Suns

Written by Motts on February 23 2013

Brodz did a superb job analysing the Brisbane team earlier this year. Is there anybody from them or the Hawks or the Suns that you’ll have your eye on tonight?

If you’re keen to analyse your own team, feel free! We’d love to see your work.

No Deano, you can’t analyse Carlton.

  1. my takeaway…
gaz was a freak in the first game, especially for a preseason game. any doubts anyone might have about surely he cant produce enough to maintain 700k plus needs to be thrown out. harley bennell had two very nice games. o’meara didnt do a ton but he’ll be fine. greg broughton was pretty non existent too. in the second game, jesse lonergan looked like a must have rookie midfielder too, missed game 1 and with ablett out was absolutely everywhere. is priced at 139k, definitely one to look at.

most noticeable for brisbane was rockliff playing a lot of midfield. wasnt a massive difference but has changed my mind about him, especially since i can get him in the fwd line. moloney had two very nice games, have since him in a few teams, and can see why. was happy with sam docherty as a backline rookie, definitely feel like brisbane are high on him and should play plenty of games.

wasnt much to look at for the hawks, buddy and cyril didnt do much at all, ive got neither in my team and they showed me nothing to try and change that. jed anderson is a midfield rookie that i have heard hawthorn are keen on, and played reasonably well in both games. dont think anyone else that is supercoach relevant took my eye.

  2. G’day guys,
I’m an avid Brisbane supporter and will have a crack at rating a few of the performances tonight. I’m certainly no expert, but will try my best!
They were slippery conditions tonight, so skill level wasn’t that flash. Even though it’s only the pre season comp and we were playing an undermaned Hawthorn team and a GC team minus Gary Ablett, I was pretty impressed with both of our wins.

    Players of interest
    DEF:
    Mitch Golby (Def $406,600)
Golby was impressive out of defence and looks to have recovered from the foot injury that sidelined him last year. Showed plenty of pace and made good decisions. He will hold down a spot in defence this year and will only improve as the season progresses. But is $406,600 overs?
    MID
    Brent Maloney (Mid $362,400)
The pick of the bunch tonight and had a massive impact. He was fierce at the contest, won contested ball and kicked a fantastic supergoal. Looks very fit and by all reports he has trained the house down and had a massive pre season. An absolute steal at $362,400 and will be in a lot of sides this year.
    Daniel Rich (Mid $485,800)
The man with the giant head and the super boot! I love this guy as my name suggests and could be an interesting POD this year. Has great leadership skills and has been appointed VC at the Lions this year. Had 2 great games tonight and looks set for a big season. Managed to break the lines and hurt the opposition with his lethal left. Question mark is whether he can manage to break the hard tag in big games?
    FWD
    Dayne Zorko (Fwd/Mid $535,000)
Zorko, Zorko, Zorko! A cult hero and his performances in both games tonight showed why. He kicked 3 goals for the night including a supergoal, applied intense pressure and used his pace to tear up the opposition. Was in Brisbane’s best in both games and looks set to take off from last year.
At $535,00 I thought that Zorko was overs. But after tonights performance, I have to consider him.
    Tom Rockliff (Fwd/Mid $520,500)
Rockliff is a lock in my forward line and had 2 solid games tonight. Gathered disposals at ease and looks set for a big year. Played mainly in the midfield and on occasions drifted forward. Has shed a few kilos and has the added bonus of being a DPP this year. Get on!
    Patrick Karnezis (Fwd $262,200)
Real potential. Has pace, is good overhead and knows how to get into space. It was reported that he was keen to be traded to a Melbourne based club last season, so Im glad we managed to hold onto him. He played in defence tonight and thought he played very well. After 2 seasons as a forward he may be looking to switch into the backline. Risky supercoach pick, but certainly a POD.

    OTHER PLAYERS OF INTEREST

    Sam Mayes (Mid/Fwd $164,500)
DPP rookie that looks set to see some senior action this year. Didn’t play tonight, but look for him during later games. Big wraps on him.
    Pearce Hanley (Def $485,200)
Was rested tonight. The Irishman has a lot of talent and will be one of the highest scoring Defenders this year. Loves to run with the ball and will be used to set up attacks. He has built up his tank and will drift more into the midfield this year. Major question mark is his decision making.
    Matty Leuenberger (RUC $301,100)
Injury cut Leuey’s season very short last year and will be looking to make an impact in 2013. He has played some minutes in intraclub matches and is hoping to be ready for the season opener. I thought that last year was going to be a breakout year for the big fella, but it was not to be. There is a question mark on his durability, but at $301,100 could be a second ruck option.

I hope that helps for anyone who didn’t get to see the games tonight.
    Cheers

  3. Love the breakdown there from a die hard fan!

Aside from a supercoach perspective, I’m a lions fan and that gave me great insight to what we can expect to see this year! I think Moloney will be a huge addition to the team.. will relieve Black a little of his ownership of that midfield as well as bring another strong, able & seasoned body into the mix. Zorko is indeed a superstar in the making here.

I can’t wait to get back to Melbourne in June for a month or so to see some footy!

  4. Don’t like his chances of cracking into the team when the stars are back, but I was impressed with Wanganeen.

Ablett, O’Meara and Rockliff confirmed there place in my starting 22.

Roughead has likely played his way into my team (again). I just love the way he scores so consistently and with Sandilands injured and Goldstein looking so poor Friday night, welcome to my team Jarryd

  6. No Nth/Melb/Rich thread so i thought i’d chuck it in here. Seemed most appropriate.

    Nth Melb
A lot of North players are awkwardly priced at the 300K-400K price range so it’ll take some kahunas (or lack of strategy) to put them in your team.

Jacobs looked really good in game one and i can see why North were so keen to get him. At 300ishK i’m not really considering him (someone like Bock who is a little more tried and true is probably a better option) but he’ll score some 100s mixed with some 60s IMO.

Currie and Daw both stood out but we all know Goldy rucks best on his own so at best one of these two (Daw) will sneak into the starting 22. Daw as a ruck bench cash cow seems a relative no-brainer to me.

Boomer could be a good upgrade target as he’s not back until round seven and he seemed to still ‘have it’.

    Melbourne
Hogan’s already in my 2014 SC team!!

Viney and Toumpas both did some good things.

Watts will score well across the half back line.

    Richmond
The big guns from Richmond will score well again in 2013. Cotchin, Deledio, Tuck, Maric, Martin … include some of these guys in your team!!

Personally i’ve got Cotchin and Maric and i am going to restructure things to get Martin in ’cause he looked Good with a capital G.

  8. Did anyone else think Hawthorn looked a bit ordinary last night. YUCK! Seeing as we had virtually no engine room there I don’t think the membership is microwave bound just yet though.

From a SC point of view there were a few players of interest from the Hawks.

I had Buddy in my team last week after trying out having a 3/0/5 backline and going big in the forward line. He’s back out now. The supply was terrible when he was forward and he did get a bit more of it when he went up the ground, but his touch was terrible. With the tough start to the year I’ll be waiting to upgrade.

Totally disagree with Gus’ comments above regarding Sizzle. He was everywhere against the Suns, especially in the first half and looked really sharp. He scares a lot of people off with injury and consistency issues so could be a really good POD. He played 20 games last year so I’m hoping he has completely adjusted to the new running style and stays injury free this year.

Couple of defenders piqued my interest. Suckling struggled last year with teams figuring him out and exposing his defensive side. From the look of last night Clarko might move him onto a wing to utilise that left foot cannon going forward. If he can find some good form from RD1 and make the wing his own he could be back to his 2011 SC form and then some.

Gibson was also an interesting one. Got a heap of the footy (7 & 11 touches) and while he completely butchered it, that won’t be happening come the season proper. I can see him getting a lot of intercept marks too being freed up by Lake coming in. Averaged just under 80 last year having to play a shut-down role so this new freedom could get him up into the 90’s.

A few of the kids did show some good signs (Wangeneen, Langford, Grimley) but I can’t see them getting games.

Jonathon Simpkin was the standout in game 2 and not just of the rookies either. Got plenty of the pill and used it neatly without being penetrating. His tackling really impressed me as well. With Hodge, Burgoyne & Lewis having interrupted starts to the year he might just be a shot for RD1 and if he shows more of what he did against the Lions could get a few more games from there. Unfortunately his price and competition for midfield rookie spots almost cancel him out.

Anderson showed glimpses but he won’t play RD1 and if he does he might struggle to get the 6 or 7 games we need or any big points. Possibly a downgrade target at some stage during the year though.

One player who I have been talking up a bit this year is Breust. I haven’t completely written him off after last night but it’s close. Didn’t seem to get any time in the guts at all which doesn’t suggest a big boost in midfield time for Punky. It might have been that Clarko was happy for him to get a run but knowing what he will get from Breust use this round to have more of a look at the kids. I’ll hold off for now but he will need to have a mmuch more prominent role next game to bring me back around.

I’ve been off Roughie completely this year and nothing about his one game changed my mind. He didn’t play forward which I expect come RD1 and for the majority of the year. The problem was he didn’t play in the ruck at all. I thought he was actually pretty good down back but that’s not going to translate to a 100+ average either so he’s still off the list.

So while the football itself was putrid it was still good to get a few tips for the real stuff – Supercoach.

  9. My question is….why do people still call the Lions, the Bears? They merged 17 years ago, and won 3 flags as the Lions!

Besides that, as an avid Lions supporter, 1 rookie who i was impressed with was M.Paparone. He broke pre-season running records at the club in his 1st year, smashing the time of R.Newell, who was once a state champion. Then his poise and ball use was very good last night, in my opinion. Not sure he will start the season proper in the 1st 22, but one to keep an eye on as a downgrade.
