Hurley v Watts

Written by Motts on April 13 2011

Inspired by a question asked in today’s Hun. The #1 pick a couple of years ago vs the #5 pick. Which one would you rather have playing for you now?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. I think you could ask the same question substituting #5 pick with any other pick in the top ten and get the same outcome. It’s getting very embarassing for the Dees heirarchy continueing to make excuses for the lad.
Let’s face it, if he were at any other club bar GCS he wouldn’t be getting a run.

  2. From a serious non-fantasy relevant level? Well my essendom biastism aside, HURLEYYYS A STARR!!!!!! Best KPP from that draft by a mile. Who else was picked in that draft who’s going well out of curiosity??

  3. And imagine the dees with hurls up forward, they would have every position covered for a decade with absolute guns! Shame watts hasn’t come on that well though, he had talent to burn as a kid.(any team at the time would have taken him with the #1 he really was that good)

  4. Here’s the Top 10:
    Watts
    Nic Nat
    Hill
    Hartlett
    Hurley
    Yarran
    Rich
    Vickery
    Ziebell
    Davis

I’d say at least a couple of those blokes are going just as well as Hurls, DC.

  5. Yeh fair enough they’re all going great. Yarran, Hill and Vickery all look brand new this year, and if H can get over his hammys he’ll be a jet. Ok ok essendon biastism aside again, as much as it pains me, Steeles possibly looking the best out of that group. Well as a mid anyway, Hurley IMHO they best KPP

  6. Haha so true, bit I actually cannot think of any #1’s not doing well bar Watts. At least Richmond got Lids in that draft

  7. Pretty sure Watts is getting dropped this week, just quietly. Did cop a spray before getting subbed off on the weekend.

  8. I don’t claim to know more than the next bloke about footy or rookies…… But I know after watching Hurley in his first Pre-season match, I told a guy at my work this guy is gona be a gun and to get him into his DT ( he doesn’t play SC), yet when I watched Watts, there was zero x-factor. I struggle to see how so many selectors got it that wrong…. I think they put far too much emphasis on beep-tests and lap times, and not enough emphasis on skill and ability…. I.e. G Williams, T Lockett, L Matthews, P Couch…. Etc etc

  9. Couldn’t agree more BS. Watts was dominating school footy to get picked at #1 and they made the decision weel before the draft. NicNat and Rich were playing WAFL senior finals whilst Hill and Yarren were showing exceptional ability in limited WAFL exposure along with U/18 Champs.
I remember at the time everyone over here bagging the Eagles and Dockers for not picking Rich however time will record that Hill and Nat will be better players if not already. In all my research I couldn’t understand Melbourne’s decision other than they were hell bent on a KPP FWD. Goes to show IMO that you pick the best players regardless of position at the top end of the draft and fit them into your structure.

  10. The Pies did alright out of that one with Steele at 11 and Beams at 29.

He needs some more games under his belt, but Liam Anthony at 43 isn’t too bad?!

  11. Geelong had a doozy for it’s only no.1 selection back in the 90’s. His name is escaping me just at the moment, Hooper? Carl Hoopert?

Played about 10 games I think.

And BS, don’t worry about the Tommahawk. I read an article saying that he is tracking the same as Jon Brown was at the same stage (although, struggled to contain the laughter)

  12. I’m sure the swans are happy with D Hannerbery at no.30, Blues would be happy with M Robinson at 40 and also hawks with S Savage at no.75.

  14. Im prepared to give Watts one more season. Im not a Melbourne fan but i have been to a few dees games. On a couple of his games i have seen him get his body into strong positions whether it be in a marking contest or a contested ball on the ground. I think the trouble has been the jump from high school to senior footy makes you second guess your decisions a bit. I think he is an intelligent player. When i first saw him play in under 18s i likened him to hird. Time will tell

  15. @ the time Sidebottom was considered a top 10, maybe top 5. I was rapt that he slid down to our pick.

  16. Comes from the same junior club as Chris Judd and Jobe Watson….. But also Fergus Watts (ex PA and StK player)… So he could go either way

  17. Still to early to judge Watts, he was a late starter and is still building up his AFL physique imo. Most C/H/F’s are not dominating early in their 3rd year of senior footy. That said, I thought Nic Nat was the stand out #1 pick that year.
Hurley is obviously in front of Watts now, but, we’ll see what happens in a few years.

  18. Watts just doesn’t work hard enough.

He’s a private school boy who has had it all given to him and been told he’s such a star (granted you have to be some-what capable to get drafted at al, let alone at #1), but he lacks the skills inside himself to bring out a work rate that will make him a star at the top level.

Having the skills to kick, mark, handball will only get you so far.

As they said on 360 last night – Watts is happy to float around, do the one good thing a game (pick a footy up at his toes, turn, hit a team mate on the tit) and then sit back and be comfortable with that. Hurley on the other hand wants to be in every contest, he wills himself to impose on the game and as a result looks a much better prospect.
