Initial Team – JAN2019

Written by Schwarzwalder on January 1 2019

Don’t have SuperCoach Gold?  Doesn’t matter!  You can use SCTs Team Picker care of our very own Huttabito.

While there is still a long way to go before Rd1, it’s interesting to see how the teams evolve before the season opener.

If you’re feeling the urge to rate the other teams, then go nuts.  Just remember to keep any critique constructive.  We’re here to help, after all.

So how did your first draft come up?  Enter it into the comments below………

    1. Bob,

      IMO,
Way too many rookies expected/needed to be playing.
My view is to have at least 22 players on field before l consider best “rookie ” option.

    1. Love the Crouch pick, as well as Wingard. If he gets a lot of midfield time at the Hawks, he’ll be a top 6 forward for sure.

      1. Thanks for the feedback I would like to get Blakely into my team, If it looks like he will get time in the midfield I might try and fit him in.

    2. I thought Birchall cooked himself again? Thought there may have been an article on it on the AFL app but I could be making stuff up

  3. My team as it currently sits. As always, rookies are heavily subject to change.

    DEF:
Lloyd, Whitfield, Blakely, Williams, Collins, Scrimshaw (Wilkie, Wigg)

    MID:
Titch, Cripps, Oliver, Neale, Zerrett, Miles, Stocker, Constable (Mosquito, Bewley, Hind)

    RUC:
    Grundy, Goldy (Fort)

    FWD:
Danger, Heeney, Setterfield, McAdam, Corbett, Parker (Burgess, Cavarra)

$31.9k remaining. I’m not sold on Goldy as R2, so may downgrade him to Longer, which gives me $319k in the bank. Problem is, I can’t really do much with that spare $300k. I can upgrade Miles to any premium mid, but don’t really want to, as I feel Miles is just too much value to pass up. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    1. You could upgrade a forward rookie to someone like Toby Greene with that 300k who is also a value selection

      1

      1. True, but Greene has still left a sour taste from 2018, given I started him and held him way too long. Daniher and Lynch are some other possibilities I’m thinking of for an F3.

  4. DEF:
    Laird, Mills, Williams,
    Burton, Collins, Clark
    (McKay, Wigg)

    MID:
    Cripps, Oliver, Fyfe, J Kelly,
    Merrett, Walsh, Setterfield, Stocker
    (Atley, Valente, Hill)

    RUC:
    Grundy, Goldstein
    (O’Brien)

    FWD:
    Dangerfield, Heeney, Billings
    Rozee, Woodcock, Blakey
    (Corbett, McAdam)

Rookies obviously subject to change – but I kept some expensive ones in there to give room to move however.

Focused on a lot on getting proven players from the right age bracket where possible. As there’s not as many established players in the backline that fit this mold I’ve taken a budget approach with the real class in the young proven mids.

  5. A new month a new team.

    Laird, Lloyd, 4xrookie.
    Mitchell, macrae, cripps, Neale, 4xrookies.
    Grundy, gawn.
Danger, smith, heeney, Gray, dunkly 1x rookie.

Going deep in the forward line, so only relying on one rookie playing scoring.
Hoping the mid rookies fuel the cash train.
Going light in defence, but uber premium.
Locking in Gawn, can be downgraded to anyone worst case, he’s my risky player I’m prepared to burn a trade on but he has to be shocking for that to eventuate.
I have 13 bona-fide keeper set and forgets, who are durable proven scorers. No risky injury prone players. Don’t have any mid prices, but with 13 set and forget premiums I’m happy with that.

    1. BIG forward line. If I read AllSaints write up on rookies correctly, more money to be made in forward rookies than defensive rookies. Food for thought but what a forward line…

      0

      0
      1. Yeah, the combination of all forward premiums being a much for much and only 2 stand out definitely lock defenders(top 4), with the others to expensive for their possible draw backs,
made me think, all the forwards will ave 95+, so I can’t lose by starting them, and a break out or two will probably come in defence where I can focus on grabbing those, as opposed to starting sicillay(suspensions) simpson(has to break down soon) at their inflated prices.(Williams, blakley, witherden, Ryan, McGrath etc) there’s too many break out contenders to chose one, so choose none and jump on which ever ones do break out, then grab sicillay and Simpson at lower prices.
Lol I hope I’m conveying my line of thinking properly.

        1. FWD Line looks strong and very deep which is along right lines given a little more rookie value in defence. DEF has Williamson, Rose, Logue, Collins and Scrimshaw as starters. As well Williams, Milera and B Smith as trade up options as rookie increase in value.

I would do to reduce section risk incase def rookies do nothing, drop Gray to Rozee and use cash for a solid middle as above. Milera i think will jump 15 points this season

You have 8 rookies on field just in def and mid… Risk risk risk

      2. It turned out to be the case last year. BUT if you recall pre-season chat, everyone was saying there was a lack of rookies in the FWD line so a lot of people went deep with the likes of Petracca and Billings!!
No right or wrong answer in January but it is a good idea to look at your top four FWDs should there be no decent rookies come team drops for Rd1.
Worth planning for every eventuality at this juncture.

        1

        1. But what I like about this team is my mid’s, ruck’s and two defenders are locks, any forward can change to Williams blakley etc pending on what happens now and start of season while putting money in my bank.

          2

          0
    2. Hi ToF,
Do u see your 4 premium mids as the top 4?
I would be interested to hear your top 8?
      Cheers

      0

      0
      1. Top 8, with 2 top 2’s.
The other 4 i would target in no order(but numbered to save any confusion), based on history are 1-Oliver, 2-Fyfe, 3-(dusty/crouch/merrett) 4-a breakout(history suggests a breakout will pop up).
But what concerns me is if mitchell, macrae and cripps all go nuts from the get go your so far behind in points. They can all go 190, which is 3 or 4 rookie scores in one. I’d rather be stressing on getting in oliver, post injury fyfe or the other 3 guys in brackets rather than those 3.
Merrett martin and crouth will have quiet games backed up by a 120 maby, so can get them cheap. Mitchell macrae and cripps, will have quiet ones too, but will probably back it up with a monster score so you might only have one or two weeks to get them in. Yet if you have a ruck go down or carnage elswhere you might miss the window to jump on.
If they spud it up, choose ANY player you want to replace them with(get them back in later at cheap price). A LAST CASE SCENARIO!

Disclaimer, this is not advise, it’s my own personal take on this years pool of players. They are all young, proven, high ceiling and past their injuries or haven’t had significant on going ones. I’m backing them in.

Also i’ve backed in neale every year for the last 4 waiting for that 120 ave, i’m feeling extra good this year lol.

    Second crack at my team.
pretty happy with this so far (at the moment).
obviously rookies are subject to change.
iv left myself with no cash but wanted to try load up my forward line as much as i could as iv had troubles converting my fwd rookies well in past seasons.

    1. One thing i would do first is not have a top price rookie on the bench. Rozze at $189K should be either in Williamson’s place or dropped to wilkie, Wigg or Mckay.

DEF this year has Rozee, Collins, Williamson, Logue as top price rookies and Scrimshaw. Laird and Whitfield should be two of the top three defenders. Harris Andrews is a good choice. Gone up each of his four years in the system with more opportunity last year and he took advantage of it. Andrews mid 90’s this year.

FWD Dangerfield is likely the walk up number 1 forward with Heeney injury effected last year and still averaged 90, just down from his high the previous year at 92. Greene is about 30 down from best year with 3 over 90. A lot depends on him running and in contact drills into the new year, some talk he is still not at that point yet. McAdam, Cavarra look like good rookies, i would consider Corbett.

MID Sloane Fyfe Crouch and Bennell are under at the moment due to long term injury or injury effected years as well Bennell with all sorts of reasons. The are likely to have good years even if you use one to trade up at end 5-6 to reduce possible long term risk, Sloane might be 15 under if he can start to handle tags. Neale will will have a great year at Brisbane and add 10 points as will Cripps. Stocker may not start and 1 as with Constable but there are many rookie options at present and they all are just place setters right now.

RUC Grundy will be in 75% or more teams but Martin is a tough one. Do you want him to add 5 points or more or stay at price and upgrade later. Still will do the job and if Gawn drops some, hold Martin

Your structure is good, a mix off Guns & Rookies in DEF, possible Set & Forget in RUC with MID and FWD under G&R with 1xMid

Remember with Rookies. History shows the drafts top 5 average more than other picks excluding mature age state players who if given opportunity are worth the pick.

    1. I better be careful not to write to much as i tend to write 25 lines per team, but anyway.

RUC Grundy and Martin will be a popular pair this year and can be set & forget, especially Grundy but if Gawn struggles Martin will be around 100-105

FWD I hope to many people don’t get to focussed on Green as i don’t think he is doing full training drills yet. Liam Picken isn’t atracting much love but hit 100 four seasons ago and 88 three. If playing, concussion issues should be a none issue and can be the mid pricer if Greene not training fully or looks off pace in JLT. McAdam is good rookie if playing along with Corbett who i am keen on.

DEF Whitfield will be a top 3 defender along with Lloyd and Laird. Blakely* and Andrews will add 10. Andrews playing as defender but Blakely* needs the midfield minutes otherwise leave alone. If he doesn’t then think about Williams, Milera or Witherden.

MID Mitchell is out for season so step in Mr Macrae. Cripps and Neale should plus 10 each while Fyfe might plus also but risks not playing 20 games, his last 5 seasons read as 15, 21, 5, 18, 18 games. Brad Crouch may go 95-98 at his price is great. As with all teams, rookies are place holders until first teams at end 1.

As suscint as i can be, cheers, hope you do well

  10. DEF:
    Lloyd, Whitfield, Blake
    Collins, Burgess, Wilkie
    (Hore, Wigg)

    MID:
    Mitchell, Cripps, Neale, Martin
    Miles, Walsh, Stocker, Constable
    (Velente, Bewley, Hind)

    RUCK:
    Grundy, Goldstein
    (Bines)

    FWD:
    Dangerfield, Heeney, Dunkley
    Wingard, Setterfield, Parker
    (Corbett, Cavarra)

    Rookies will change over time.
Gambling with Martin to hit his strides again, Miles is a stepping stone so I can go deeper in the forward line. I find foward rookies harder to upgrade every year. So going 4 premos hoping Wingard steps up to a top 10 fwd.
Happy with my 3 starting backs. If I require more funds, Blake can go down to Williams.

    Cheers all.

    1. On first read this team feels very good and is spread well across ground with no one area stacked.

FWD With Mitchell out Wingard might be the player to get many more midfield minutes. Worpel might get more minutes which will not be a surprise as Haw need a new generation of midfielders to come through. Dunkley is a good choice, mine too. Finished last year off very well 6 tons at 124. Heeney is a top 6 forward that is under priced due to injury effected round 15, may have 105 in him which is just plus 8.

DEF Lloyd and Whitfield are two of top 3 defenders while Blakely if he gets the mid minutes of Neale can plus 10 “or so” as someone whispers in my ear he will go plus 15 with the mid minutes.

Collins is a popular choice and he does look good for first round as does Walsh in mid. One thing to remember if you can structure it is that top 5 draft picks tend to average more other draft picks, don’t just dismiss top priced rookies as they do have a higher success rate depending on which points matrix you go bye, long term ave or price increase over first 6 rounds then trade up.

I am with you on Miles, he has been a good scorer in the past and will now have his best chance of getting a f/t mid role, stepping stone but one of the later ones. Martin might be a set & forget if Gawn dips with Preuss there but this doesn’t automaticlly mean so. watch. Wingard may just have got his chance and also be in the position of best opportunity for near full mid minutes.

Rookies are generally place holders at this stage and even if not the right player have the right price where you want it.

  11. Keep an eye on Thomas Fullarton from the Lions as a ruck bench options. Doing some good things at the moment

    1. At 19 he’s pretty raw…perhaps keep an eye out for Darcy Fort from Geelong whos a mature aged recruit and playing for a team that hasnt found their right ruck combination yet

    1. Geronimo.

If you going to take a punt on a underpriced injury prone player. I’m not sure the Ruck is the spot to try it.

If you have a midpricer go down on another line. Its easier to downgrade them to a rookie and bank the cash for later. You have more bench cover and should be able to cover it.

If you go Kreuzer and he gets injured in the first month. Not only will you have to burn a trade. You will have very few options to replace him at that price. Mumford maybe ?

I few years ago it may have been worth the risk.
This year I would personally steer well clear.

      7

      1
  12. Slight change to the team. Forward line was definitely looking a bit thin, so with a bit of a shuffle, I’ve brought Wingard in at F3.
    $38k remaining.

    DEF:
Lloyd, Whitfield, Blakely, Williams, Scrimshaw, Hore (Wilkie, Wigg)

    MID:
Macrae, Cripps, Oliver, Neale, Zerrett, Miles, Stocker, Constable (Mosquito, Bewley, Hind)

    RUC:
    Grundy, Longer (Fort)

    FWD:
Danger, Heeney, Wingard, Setterfield, McAdam, Corbett, (Burgess, Cavarra)

This leaves me with 13 premiums and 1 mid-pricer in Miles, who should be an easy upgrade to a premium mid.

  13. The format on this site is seriously flawed.
You can’t answer /be answered unless u happen to be online at the same time. You end up with an endless stream of teams that no one comments on. What’s the point? Have a look at Big Footy and Fan Footy for how to run a forum.

  15. For what it’s worth guys, and it could be a lot, a certain player, whose name I won’t mention yet, because I’m awaiting confirmation and it would be DANGERous to do so if it is not completely true, has a possible minor but consistently nagging back issue that could keep them based around the forward line more frequently this season. I have someone “fishing” for more info, but I reckon JLT would be a better guide.

    2

      1. Well worked in TOF, carefully worded quite well.
It could also indicate that the name of an infamous gang could be back in the headlines for what activities it my be partaking in, and to what relevance this has on JLT.

        1

        1. I can’t see any danger in thinking the gang-leader will be a top6 forward however this story plays out!

    1. I also read an article on HS that said he’s lost 4kg to help overcome his back complaint. I’m keeping him. I got laughed at by my peers last year when he lost a crapload of money, but I feel this year will be better. Keeper.

  16. First draft of the team for the year and I’m not sure how I feel about it but here it is.

DEF: Laird, Blakely, Witherden, Williams, Logue, Hore (Koschitzke, Wigg)

MID: Mitchell, Cripps, Oliver, Neale, Merrett, Miles, Valente, Hind (Constable, Bewley, E.Smith)

    RUC: Grundy, Longer (Fort)

FWD: Dangerfield, Heeney, Dunkley, Setterfield, Corbett, Cavara, (Burgess, Riach)

$122,900 in the bank but my main concern is I don’t like having Longer in the team at all and would much prefer Martin/Goldstein/Nankervis but I’m unsure where that cash generation could come from? If you have any ideas for improvements or just want to roast me, feel free to do that 🙂

  17. Geronimo.

I think most should have made a few upgrades by the time round 12 rolls around.

With a bit of luck you may have as many as 18 premiums by then.

So if you have planned well you should have a third of them missing the first week. And then a at least one more each week , as you upgrade.

    R12 plan for
12 Premos playing (downgrade trades only)

    R13
    12+ upgrade trade = 13 Premos playing.

    R14
Maybe even a double upgrade = 14 or 15 Premos playing.

This is just a rough guide.
I hope it gives you something to work with.

  18. What’s a better combo…
Grundy/Goldy with Danger, Heeney, Dunkley & Wingard up forward?
Or Grundy/Gawn with Heeney, Smith, Dunkley & Wingard up forward?

If I start Goldy, he stays till the end with Danger in the forward line from rd1.
If I start Gawn instead, I can get Danger later. Plus it’s looking more like Gawn is becoming a POD in 2019. Danger could play a game more forward and drop on value to maybe mid 500k. I’d just hate not to have the Grundy/Gawn combo thru the finals if I make it.

    Other coaches thoughts?

    2
  19. I’m wondering what to do with my extra spot.
I have 390k and can put it into any position (29/30 already chosen)
I have no midpricers but 2 premium rookies: Collins D5, Longer R2 (will downgrade but not upgrade)
    My structure is 4-4-1-4

    0

    2
    1. I’d stick Anthony Miles (GCS) in your MIDs. Bound to score decent pts and make $100k min. in the process. Will leave you c$50k slush fund too.
Don’t know your picks, but I’d likely go 3-5-1-4 or 4-5-1-3 too if you can afford it and are happy to do so; MIDs generally ave. significantly more than both DEF and FWD lines and will give you a little more flexibility in your upgrades (greater %age per line to fill).
But that’s your call. Good luck

      3

  20. So I got thinking.

What would I do if we suffered a major rookie drought this year.

We all have a G&R teams we’re working on.
What happens if there’s only 1o or so rookies picked round 1 ?
I had thought I could just tweak my G&R team, but I was forced to take a VERY different approach. I have added as many DPP’s and ruck cover as I can,Lets just say this is a doomsday prepper approach to SC. This team is not recommended under normal conditions.
I have put the * on the 10 playing rookies.

I call this team Pandora’s Box.

  21. Made a slight adjustment to my last team.
I have swapped out Mitchell and Constable for Crouch and Libberatore.
Not sure if il leave it like this, but was thinking that Mitchell will drop in price and i will target him as my first upgrade.
But leaves me pretty heavy in the Mid and Fwd lines which im pretty happy with.

What do you think? any feedback?

    1. I’m going out on a short limb and saying that you have to start laird. He’s durable proven and consistent.
Coaches choice but I think you have to also include either mitchell or macrae. You probably won’t generate enough money to trade them both in, and if they both bottom out at the same time you will miss one. If they drop to 550-600 that’s still a lot of money to make to get them both in.

      3

      0
      1. Sorry after re-reading i wasn’t saying you must select Laird, just that a little consistency goes a long way, and that’s who he is.

        2

        0
      2. yeah thanks i i completely understand and think your right. just keep shuffling everything around to see how i can fit the most amount of experience into my team. but i might have to re consider Mitchell and laird

        1

        0
    2. I think All Saints calculated that each trade is worth about $100k. If so, to not start titch means you expect him to drop at least $100 to about $600k. That would mean that at some stage he would need to drop to a three round rolling average of 110 approx. I wonder when that last happened…and you would have to time it perfectly or it might cost two trades not one.

  22. CLARIFICATION,

IMO a “ROOKIE ” is yet to play a game.
    A “PLAYER” has previously played.
That is what I was implying when I suggested 22 “players”.
Maybe we should use “APPRENTICE ” if they have previously played, until they play at least an “X” number of games.
Of course if a Rookie is selected at a cheaper price over an Apprentice who is also selected for Rd 1 we would take the Rookie……wouldn’t we!!!

    0

    4
    1. The common term used is “rookie-priced”.

And in footy terms of course you’re right, but in SuperCoach it is anyone priced at or below that year’s #1 draft pick. So this year it’s at or below $207 300.

It just makes things easier from a planning perspective and to explain to others what you’re on about. Hope that makes sense.

  23. Which team would go better, Mainly focused on the structure, shuffle players however you want.

    OPTION 1.
laird, sicily, hurn, crisp, blakely, williams
    Macrae, 7xrookies
    grundy, goldie.
dangerfield, heeny, smith, gray dunkly, wingard.
    15 keepers.

    OPTION 2.
    Laird, williams, 4 x rookies.
mitchell, macrae, cripps, oliver, neale, martin, crouch, merritt
    grundy, gawn.
    dangerfield 5 x rookies.
    13 keepers.
Both of these teams can be filled with watch list rookies. Inc setterfield and other 123,900 priced players.
This is just a bit of fun. Or is it…

    1. Having 7 rookies in the mids you’d a losing a f**k load of points per week. And yes, that is the technical term for it

      1

      0
      1. Fielding rookies in any position makes you lose points. But off set somewhat by the combination of 15 keepers and mid rookies outscoring def and fwd ones. So against a team with the general start of 5 premiums in the mid, this team has macrae, so only need to bridge the gap from 4 premium mids. Which the depth in fwd and def should do.

        1

        2
  24. okay iv worked mitchell and laird back into my team now. just got a decision to make about my 3rd defender. Williams or Blakely? Have a look at my team and let me know what you think.

    DEF:
Lloyd,Laird,[Williams??? or do i go Blakely]

    FWD:

    (Parker,Cavarra)

-Williams leaves me $64,900 Left in bank.
-Blakely leaves me $10,900 Left in the bank.

Is Blakely worth the extra $54,000???

    1

    0
    1. I’d go Williams over blakley. Blakely has injury history, and not sure yet if he gets those mid minutes, which is why you would choose him. Williams had an injury but will probably be over it.

  26. Is it just me or is there a lot of breakout potential in the defence line this year to become top 10? Names of Ryan, Andrews, Witharden, Blakely, Williams*, Tom Stewart or even Short keep swapping in and out of my side. How many would it be wise to pick if any if one was to start 3-4 defenders $400K+

  27. Thoughts on my first draft? First look at SC for 2019, so I whacked something together quickly

B – Whitfield, Williams, Blakely, Newman, Collins, Scrimshaw (Hore, Wigg)
M – Cripps, Kelly, Martin, Merrett, Beams, Miles, Setterfield, Stocker (Hind, Valenete, West)
    R – Grundy, Goldy (Bines)
F – Danger, Heeney, Gresham, Blakey, Stengle, Rozee (Hill, McAdam)

    1. Shane.

      Pretty solid effort first up.

I’m quite conservative SC wise ,so I would be hesitant to have Blakey, Williams, Newman and Gresham all in the same side.
Only Williams has averaged enough to be considered a premium before, so your really gambling on the others.

I know you are trying to get some value keepers into your side, but I would consider trading Newman down to say Williamson (both Carlton). Then look at upgrading at least one of Blakely or Gresham to proven premiums.
The Dusty and Beams choices may pay off, but I would have some concerns they both may play some time forward this season.

      Overall a good structure.

May just need a little tweaking as we get closer to R1.

  28. My initial team would love some feedback, every year I seem to make wrong R2 decisions.

    1. Mummy not playing till round 3 at best I think. Also if he gets injured you can’t upgrade him. Should at leased put in goldstein. Will be a popular pick this year. Also too many expensive rookies at this point, 1 maby 2, put the money into something else because if they perform badly you won’t make much money.

      4

      0
      1. thanks I have swapped Mummy for Goldy and traded Brooksby to a floating donut and traded Nick Blakey to a cheaper rookie. Have $23,000 but like the team balance more.

  29. Righto, Mitchell going down frees up a little cash.

DEF: Whitfield, Blakely, Williams, Williamson, Collins, Scrimshaw (Rookie, Rookie)
MID: Cripps, Fyfe, Neale, Merrett, Crouch, Miles, Walsh, Rookie (Rookie, Rookie, Rookie)
    RUC: Grundy, Mumford (Flynn)
FWD: Danger, Smith, Wingard, Fisher, Rankine, Setterfield (McAdam, Rookie)

Suspect I’ll be looking to make as many of those rookie Mature Agers if possible.

Ruck department is a little iffy – banking for now on Flynn getting an opportunity while Mumford is on the pine. Have allowed $123k per “rookie” spot, so if a few cheaper options pop up I may be able to maneuver a little more.

  30. Another day another match committee (of 1) meeting to tweek my team again:

Backs: Lloyd Witherden Williams Birchall McKay Wigg (Collins Scrimshaw)

Mids: Macrae Fyfe Merret Neale M.Crouch Miles Constable Bewley (Hately Valente Setterfield)

    Rucks Grundy Kreuzer (Schlensog)

Forwards: Dangerfield Heeney Dunkley Mcadam Corbett Cavarra (Moore Parker)

    Bank $68600

Comments: Lloyd i tried all last season to get him in my side but failed. I said never again. I think Witherden is due for a break out season. Birchall is a no brainer if he plays round

Mids Macrae same as Lloyd. Gone for a bit of depth and Miles value is too good to ignore. Constable should get a game. If Carlton pick up Gibbons he will be in.

Rucks Grundy same as Lloyd & Macrae. Kreuzer if her has a full pre-season. I reckon he plays like Grundy just needs to get on the park, Wanted a cheap ruck/forward as R3

Forwards: Danger up and coming superstar and a lock if ever there was one. Heeney and Dunkley to have break out seasons and Moore if he has a good pre season will definitely play which is what you want from your cheapies

    Any thoughts most welcome

  31. Hi guys, my team so far:

DEF: Lloyd, Sicily, Blakely, Williams, Collins, Wilkie (Hore, Wigg)
MID: Macrae, Oliver, Neale, Coniglio, Martin, Miles, Stocker, Constable (Bewley, Hind, Watson)
    RUC: Grundy, Longer (Fort)
FWD: Dangerfield, Heeney, Worpel, Setterfield, McAdam, Cavarra (Kreuger, Parker)

Pretty set on Lloyd, Macrae, Grundy and Danger. I feel Sicily and Worpel could be good additions with the loss of Titch (both may get more of the pill) hence their additions over others. This is my first time not starting with Laird in ages, feels dirty. Longer is not set but I feel he’ll be a good R2 til maybe after bye rounds to see how things are, though not sure. Still have $118k in the bank.

    Happy to hear any thoughts!

    1. Worpel could really step up in the absence of Titch! Not sure how Sicily will be impacted with him gone… more ball in def half possibly?

  32. Team version 4.62

    Tossing up between two squads.

    Team 1
Def: Whitfield, Blakely, Witherden, WILLIAMS, Collins, Scrimshaw (Wilkie, Wigg)
Mid: Fyfe, Neale, MARTIN, Merrett, Heeney, Miles, Bennell, Watson (Stocker, Bewley, Hind)
    Ruc: Grundy, GOLDSTEIN (Clarke)
Fwd: Danger, DUNKLEY, Wingard, Setterfield, Corbett, Parker (McAdam, Cavarra)

    Team 2
Def: LAIRD, Whitfield, Blakely, Witherden, Collins, Scrimshaw (Wilkie, Wigg)
Mid: CRIPPS, Fyfe, Neale, Merrett, Miles, Bennell, CONSTABLE, Watson (Stocker, Bewley, Hind)
    Ruc: Grundy, GAWN (Clarke)
Fwd: Danger, Heeney, Wingard, Setterfield, Corbett, Parker (McAdam, Cavarra)

The four players I’m looking at are Williams, Martin, Goldstein & Dunkley VS Laird, Cripps, Gawn & Constable (or any other rookie) with Heeney switching between mid and fwd.

Option two seems to take a lot more of the risk out. Even though I don’t expect Laird, Cripps & Gawn to average as much as they did last year I still expect them to be in the top 6, 10 and 2 respectively for their positions and saves me getting them later in the year at their elevated prices. However it does require one more rookie fielded & may depend on rookie availability come round 1 + will have to encounter the Gawn/Grundy rd 13 bye conundrum.

I’m still not 100% sold on Zach Williams. Firstly while he made a great return in the finals last year there may be a chance he reinjures his achilles up during the season or the injury potentially hampers his scores. Secondly in his best season (2017) where he averaged 93.9 he still posted 4 scores under 75 including a 49 (this may have been injury affected). Makes me think that whilst he will gain value you still might be able to pick him up for about 450k later in the season. Plus with the Rd 14 Bye it is difficult starting Laird, Whitfield & Williams all in the same team.

The pros and cons for rest have been discussed hundreds of times already on here but still having trouble splitting them!

  33. So why am I being tempted by rockliff over Williams as my 400,000 fallen premium? Is it because he can only improve, and has a ceiling of 200? He was so awful last year he has to be better this year dosnt he? Which rockliff rocks up this season?

    1

    0
    1. Would absolutely stay away, he’s fully cooked IMO. Even if by some miracle he does manage to get back to a 110 average, he’s still only going to give you half a season. There’s a reason people were skeptical in picking him even when he was good for a 110 average.

If you’re not sold on Williams and are looking for a bargain at that price in the midfield, I’d much rather pick a breakout candidate around that price like McCluggage, McGrath, Fisher or even Worpel.

And if you’re not sold on any of those players breaking out, there’s also Brad Crouch at $416k, who is just as injury prone but more likely to score like a premo than Rocky IMO.

So yeah, I can see where you’re coming from, but it’s a hard no from me.

      2

      1. Lol he’s the only guy that could ave 120 over the first 5 games and everyone goes no way not touching him.

        2

        2
        1. I’d rather a guy that averages 95 over 22 games than a guy that averages 120 over the first 5 games and then either doesn’t play or averages 80 for the rest of the year.

          2

  34. DEF: Whitfield, Sicily Blakely, Logue, Collins, Wigg, Hore, Burgess
MID: Cripps, Oliver, Martin, Merrett, Crouch, Miles, Walsh, Constable, Bewley, Hind, Golds* (Gibbons??)
    RUCK: Goldstein, Grundy, Sweet
FWD: Dangerfield, Heeney, Wingard, Setterfield, McAdma, Blakey, Cavarra, Corbett
    $81,000 left

Pretty settled on this lineup, only thing that keeps changing are my D2 and D3 which could be any of about 7 guys on a list because I feel a fair few are underpriced this year in DEF. Gone with value in the MIDs with only 2 600K+, but I feel Martin, Merrett and Crouch will all be top 10 this year. And pretty common place with the 3 premiums in the FWD line.

    1

    0
    1. Like it. But would start Z.Williams over Sicily. I’m not questioning Sicily being Top6, just see much greater value in starting Williams. I get it if you want Laird early and/or are watching Milera. The Rd14 bye in DEFs is giving me a serious headache! And in the FWD line, but for opposite reasons … where are all the DEF/FWD dpp’s?!?

      1

      0
  35. Thanks allsaints! Williams is definitely the first I would bring in as a D4 as I do believe he is excellent value (actually one I’m considering for D3) however I have reservations of having too many players who are an injury risk, Blakely I believe offers more value for potential output, which is why he’s at D3. Now I realise Sicily is also an injury (and flog) risk, but the wrist is less likely to be aggravated than Williams’ achilles and Clark has to pull Sicily’s head in as he is almost their most important player with Mitchell out.

  36. First Cut..would appreciate any thoughts

B: Lloyd, Whitfield, Williams, Logue, Duursma, Answorth (Hore, Wigg)
M; Cripps, Fyffe, Dusty, Zerrett, Crouch, Setterfield, Constable, Bewley (Stocker, Valente, Sparrow)
    R: Grundy Gawn, Sweet
F: Danger, Heeney, Smith, Worpel, Nutting, Cavarra (Corbett, Mozzie)

    13/14 Keepers.

I’m expecting a hungry Worpel to grab a unique opportunity and increase his average by 15+ as i believe he is the only natural inside mid among the other hawk contenders.

Unfazed atm by no Rucks in R13 as i will be hoping to have decent players elsewhere to cover as best as they can. Goldy obviously an alternative though.

Rookies? Whoever looks the good and is picked R1 or soon thereafter.

    Leaves $34,500

    1

    1
    1. Good to see you back Geronimo. Like this a lot.

Worpel put his hand up immediately I heard.
Also like Fyfe. Has enough pre-seasons in him and is managing his load to ensure he has the best opportunity to play 22 h&a games this year. Crucial for FRE’s long-term progress you’d think, with some seriously good kids bound for elite status (Brayshaw, Cerra etc)

The only premo tweaks I’d be thinking are that you might be better served with Lloyd as an early upgrade target (I’m 93% certain he’ll be cheaper before the byes) and start Bewley (cash generator at worst). Would give you enough cash for say Miles instead of Stocker (or ANO expensive rookie).

On a more general point, why is there no love for Oliver?!?
I know he’s my namesake, but is a freak who may just single-handedly carry MEL to a flag this year. You can see how badly he wants it. Wish we had someone half as good.

      4

        1. Have to disagree I’m afraid. I admit a lot of people on SCT have a focus on leagues and like a huge ceiling, but if you’re going for overall, he’s Mr Consistent. 12 120+s, 5 140+s incl a 150 last year, incl playing with a broken hand and two painful shoulders for the back half of the year. Had surgery post-season (minor on both shoulders, adapting his game while dealing with it) and is being managed (contact-wise) to be the #1 SuperCoach scorer in 2019. Maybe Grundy will beat him but nobody else.
The 6-6-6 will lend itself to those gut-runners who make themselves the extra man through second and third efforts (tick) and he’s likely still two years off his best. 120+ minimum. And 22 games.

          GUN

          5

          0
          1. I love the guy and started him last year, the only reason I don’t have him so far this year is because of macrae, cripps and value mids. I was just throwing up possible reasons why people weren’t considering him. But yeah I fully agree, he’s a gun.

            0

            0
      1. Thank you for your response. Much appreciated. Great points.

Oliver is a gun and can grab him instead of say Crouch if i downgrade from Lloyd. My thinking was that there may be more upside with Crouch, Dusty and Merrett and that Oliver would be a target a little later in the season before the byes.

As Miles seems to be on everyone’s radar i’m keen for a point of difference and hopefully a rookie will provide that plus quicker cash generation. It seems that Miles has been out of favour at Tigerland for a reason. Miles or Worpel?

        1

        0
      2. I’m not sure how the Viney return will affect his scoring. Brayshaw firing also mkeans less points for Oliver in the middle. Will still score but I foresee a 105-110 ave and not the 110+ I look for in starting premiums i.e. Fyfe, Cripps, Macrae etc.

        1

        0
        1. Good points Peter, but don’t see either as relevant.

          i. Viney is far more likely to effect Harmes’ output than Oliver’s. Given they play the similar run-with/tagging role. Just look how depressed Harmes’ scoring was (pushed forward) when Viney was playing last year and,
ii. Oliver averaged more than his season’s average after Brayshaw’s season really took off.

I’m hoping nobody starts Oliver and then he’s an awesome POD!

          3

          0
            1. Sorry Peter, but which bit? I don’t get it?!

Viney played Rds 9-16 incl. Harmes averaged 78 during that period. 7pts or nearly 10% down on season’s average.

Brayshaw came properly good in Rd16 after a quiet period. From that point home Oliver averaged 123+, against a season ave. of 114. Again, all positive.

              2

              0
        2. Oliver is rumoured to play more forward next season in a role similar to Dusty’s. I don’t think I’ll be starting him.

          1

          0
  37. Second Cut..
If Lloyd goes for Blakely i can bring Oliver in for Crouch (which i will consider)…however…the following is tempting…

Outs…..Lloyd for Blakely….Setterfield for Miles…Stocker for Mozzie in the mids and Mozzie for Choi in the fwds..however this leaves me with potentially three non scoring rookies (Wigg, Mozzie and Choi)

    Lineup…

B: Whitfield, Blakely, Williams, Logue, Duursma, Answorth (Hore, Wigg)
M; Cripps, Fyffe, Dusty, Zerrett, Crouch, Miles, Constable, Bewley (Mozzie Valente, Sparrow)
    R: Grundy Gawn, Sweet
F: Danger, Heeney, Smith, Worpel, Nutting, Cavarra (Corbett, Choi)

More points early in the season and my gut tells me that both Worpel and Miles will provide a good stepping stone to Premos when needed

    1

    1
  38. Aight lets have another go at it:

    DEF: L. Whitfield, C. Blakely, Z. Williams, T. Williamson, S. Collins, M. Hore (J. McLennan, H. Wigg)

    MID: J. Macrae, P. Cripps, C. Oliver, L. Neale, Z. Merrett, A. Miles, S. Walsh, C. Constable (B. Bewley, J. Bytel, N. Hind)

    RUCK: B. Grundy, T. Goldstein (D. Fort)

    FWD: P. Dangerfield, I. Heeney, R. Gray, W. Setterfield, S. McAdam, B. Cavarra (I. Hill, M. Parker)

Most rookies are subject to change.

Macrae comes in for Titch, didn’t have room for both originally so he is a fine replacement.

I’m completely sold on Miles, at worst he’s a stepping stone to another mid premo.

Heeney comes in for Dunkley, Dunkley may not be a full-time mid and Heeney is training with the midfield group.

I’m starting Gray presuming he gets a spot in the mids full time, if not he’s getting swapped to Smith.

Simmo out, decided he’s too expensive and needed the money elsewhere.

Greene also out, looking like a cheap upgrade a few rounds into the season rather than a starter.

I also have $26k in the bank.

    Thoughts?

    1. my thinking is very similar.
      Currently thinking (on premos)
Dusty over Neale – more value
Have gone back to Gawn at R2 – still undecided tho
Smith at F3 – could become Gray IF he’s certain for MID

      Rookies:
Don’t have Williamson (can’t afford him) with Gawn
Have left a hole for Gibbons … hurry up and sign him Carlton!!
If Walsh looks great in JLT, will have to drop Gawn (for Goldy) to get the cash I need

      1. Should’ve mentioned Gibbons is guaranteed a spot when Carlton sign him, as a Carlton fan myself I can’t wait!

If I need a little extra cash for another midpricer or to nab some expensive rookies, the first thing I’m doing is downgrading Neale to a Dusty/Crouch/Brayshaw etc.

And I think with the lack of prospective cows, I’m willing to pay an extra 80-90k for a gun that’ll play every game.

Thanks for the feedback either way!

  39. This is a great read everyone. Nice work.

Going a Guns and Rooks this season just to be different as there are so many mid price options that other coaches seem to be taking.
Will be taking my risks in the ruck setup though.
    Am I mad ?

Def: Whitfiield; Witherden; Mills; Williams; McLennan; Hore; ( Wigg; McKenzie)

    Mid: Dangerfield; Cripps; Fyfe; Neale; Martin; Sloane; Stocker; Bewley;
    ( Valente; Hind; Owies )

Ruck: Martin; Longer; ( Xerri )

Fwds: Smith; Henney; Gray; Wingard; Setterfield; Parker; ( Cavarra; Bines )

    I’m not sure you’re mad.
But you are doing something quite different.

Starting Danger in midfield. I know you will want to move him forward at some stage. why not start him forward?
Martin longer Ruck Combo. Well thats a new one. I’m just not sold on longer at this stage. He has never been a great SC scorer and will probably only average 70 or so maximum.( Grundy should ave 125+, thats 55 ppg difference. gulp) I know it frees up so much cash to spend on other lines. I just think its a trap that will be very hard to get out of when it all goes pear shaped.

Williams, Mills and Witherden down back. Williams Yes. Mills maybe? I’m just not sure Witherden is capable of a full breakout season while Hodge is still playing that half back role and Harris Andrews maybe freed up from KPP duties by Adams arrival.

Also three of your starting Forwards Smith, Wingard and Grey all share the R12 Bye. This means you will be missing one of those scores and you wont really have the option to get in any more R12 bye players if they become juicy fallen premiums pre Bye.

Lastly I’m not sure how much cash you have left over? I would be looking at a plan B as some of your cheaper rookies may not get a game and you may need to fork out a little more coin to get playing cash cows.

A little tweaking should see a pretty solid side.

    Happy planning. 🙂

  41. Also B C.

If you trade out Grey for maybe Z. Merrett.( similar price and will be a very popular choice this year) that would move Danger forward and also help with your Bye structure. 😉

  42. 2nd crack at my team. Based on last year where the forwards were a mixed back, I’ve gone with a 2 premo forward line and let the rest sort it out itself.
Other option is to free up some cash and bring in Worpel as my F3. Currently have $150k left

B – Lloyd, Laird, Williams, Blakely, Scrimshaw, Collins (Wigg, Hore)
M – Macrae, Cripps, Kelly, Merrett, Beams, Miles, Stocker, Constable (Sparrow, Valente, Hind)
    R – Grundy, Goldy (Schlensog)
F – Heeney, Danger, Setterfield, McAdam, Stengle, Cavarra (Hill, Parker)

    1. I don’t mind the 2 prem FWD idea, and it’s one I’ll definitely consider.

Not sure how much I trust this year’s low end FWD prems like Wingard, R Gray and Dunkley given we don’t yet know what Wingard’s role will be, Gray is always a risk to be sat at full forward by Hinkley and Dunkley hasn’t shown consistent scoring over an entire season yet.

      Interesting idea!

  43. Could be a risky move Shane.

You have spent a whole lot of money in defence which in my book leaves you very open forward.

Personally I would be worried about the scoring power of your on field forward rookies like Mc Adam .Sighted for a defensive forward role, thats not very SC friendly. I wouldn’t expect much more than 50/60 points a week.

I would maybe look at a slightly more balanced approach downgrading a defensive Premo to someone like Williamson (Carlton, if he gets Doc’s role could average 75/85 ppg). Then getting in a F3. This may also allow you to afford a slightly more expensive forward rookie like Blakey,or Walsh (mid) that may score you a few more points on field.

Overall I think you have very solid team.

I’m loving the and Ruck combo.

    1. Thanks for the feedback. My big concern as you pointed out is the points I’ll get from FWD rookies as compared to defense rookies. I’m hoping the rookies become clearer after some JLT games, but If I was to restructure I would downgrade Blakely or Williamson (GWS) to a rookie and bring in a stronger F3

      1

      1. Yeah cool.

I feel they may be more mature age defensive rookies. Collins Williamson, Hore, Wilkie. and slightly more drafties picked in the forward line. like Blakey Lukosius, Rankine.

I’m more inclined to trust a mature aged rookie playing defence for say Carlton. Than a first year player playing forward for a team that doesn’t score much ( GCS)

Its still good to have a few different options until we know what rookies are playing where.

  44. Okay, so my first team since Mitchell went down.
Decided to take Lloyd out, not sure if thats the right decision. But pretty happy with this team.
    All feed back appreciated.

    1. Looks really good I reckon. My only concern would be that ALL three of your premo DEFs have the Rd14 bye, which means that one will have to be onfield and not able to score. If you can cover it elsewhere (ideally you want a min. 20 on field for each bye) then it’s not a disaster. Just not ideal that’s all.

A minor point is that if Parker is selected for Rd1, I’d have him on field ahead of both McAdam and Corbett.

Apart from that, like I said, looks v strong.

      3

      0
      1. both very good points. thanks allsaints. will have to see what i can do to cover that bye.

If you were me, out of my defense who would you take out and bring in so that they didnt all have the same bye?

        appreciate the feedback.

        1

        0
        1. I want all three of them too to be honest, but I’m going Whitfield over Laird at this point. Bigger ceiling, more MID-time and tho he averaged less than Laird last year he actually scored more points overall and that is always my main focus.
Finally, I can easily see Whitfield going to another level again, whereas I think Laird will simply deliver the same again, and again, and again. He is Mr Consistency after all. So,

There’s little/no risk in taking Laird, there’s more with Whitfield, but greater potential upside to my mind. Both good choices and go with your gut.

Am sure feelings/opinions will change between now and week 1. Haven’t decided on D3 yet, but I like Blakely if he looks set for the midfield.

          2

          0
        2. There is another way and that is to just roll as is. You’ll likely be able to cover the numbers in your FWDs given there are no Rd14 premos so will likely be able to field six there.
If you can’t cover it come the bye, then you can always trade the worst of them for a Lloyd-type. If it doesn’t make sense to do that, then you’ve probably made the right decision anyway!

          2

          0
          1. yeah your exactly right. i think for now i might roll with it and aim to bring in lloyd before the round 14 bye. but im sure im gunna make some changes before round 1 anyway. lol

but thanks for all the wisdom.

  45. Ok I have been blagging on about other peoples teams enough.

Here’s my first team in a while.

All rookies subject to selection blah blah blah.

    Backs:
Whitfield, Mills, Williams, Williamson, Collin, Wilkie.
    ( Burgess D/F, Hore.)

    Mids:
Cripps, J kelly, Neale, M.Crouch, Z Merrett, Miles, Walsh, Atley.
( Stocker, Bewley, Carter “loop” )

Rucks: Grundy, Goldie. ( Fort or Sweet)

    Forwards:
Danger, Henney, Smith, Rozi F/D, Blakey, Setterfield.
    ( McAdam, Cavarra.)

I’ve included Rozi and Atley from Port. They are both running machines and I think (especially with Wingard and Polac gone)
Port will really need their speed and skill this year.Ports midfield doesn’t really scream pace with Wines, Ebert,SPP and Boak still running through there.
Rozi can always be switched back to defence with his D/F DPP.

Lloyd had to go for Mills. 🙁

Something had to give to keep the Grundy/ Goldie ruck combo and Miles at M6

    $51 ooo in the bank.

So did I nail it or what?

    1

    0
    1. Close I reckon 😉

First go in a long while …

DEF: Whitfield, Blakely, Z.Williams, Williamson, Collins, McKay (Wilkie, Carter l/h)
MID: Macrae, Cripps, Martin, M.Crouch, Merrett, Miles, Bewley, Gibbons (Sparrow, 2 rookies)
      RUC: Grundy, Goldstein (Fort/Sweet)
FWD: Dangerfield, D.Smith, Heeney, H.Himmelberg, Setterfield, Parker (Corbett, Cavarra)

Himmelberg looked more and more at home up forward for GWS , averaging 89.5 (11 games, 4 100+s and a 135) from the middle of the byes onwards, after making the move permanent. With Greene likely missing the start of 2019, I’ll enjoy making gravy until Greene returns. Ticks a few boxes too. High draft pick (Rd1/16), 4th season, 40 games and a modern-day footy player … tick!

Have gone real deep in MIDs and RUC (that’s where all the points are). Happy with premo picks/byes/rookies on other lines.

      1

      0
      1. Nice team allsaints.

        What no Oliver?

Himmelberg could be the R14 Bye forward we have all been looking for. With R.lobb leaving and Greene maybe missing early, you may be onto something. 😉

I see our main differences as Macrea and Dusty (you) v’s Kelly and Neale (me)

There’s a whole lot of pros and cons for both. They are all the best midfielders for their sides. Could go either way.

look forward to joining at least 1 league with you this year.

        Oh by the way.

How much cash you got left ?

        1

        0
        1. Thanks mate and let’s definitely do a League.

Have already made a couple of changes. Williamson out, Hore on bench (just read some good new about him) and prefer Collins over Williamson.

Have also convinced myself that Wingard is now a better pick than Smith at F3.

Now have $86k in the bank, which is better than the previous $500!!

On yours, I love Kelly and Neale but I just feel Martin and Crouch offer better value. Crouch’s big year came with his bro on the park (tho’ how long that’ll last?!) and just feel Dusty will get more mid-time with a likely new FWD structure at Punt Rd. BOTH are clearly fitter than last year.

Neale’s move is likely not a concern, but I feel better having him at the top of my upgrade/watchlist (definitely have room for another Rd13 bye). Kelly is one of my favourite players, but I do recall a number of SCTers saying he produces his monster scores against weak oppo (doesn’t everybody?), but GWS’ early fixture is horrendous. Sadly I won’t be able to pick him up til after the byes as I already have three in the MIDs, but like you want Miles at M6 and the Grundy/Goldy combo and this is the only way I can afford it.
Yeo is also on my early upgrade list as I see him going to 110+ this year, but we’ll see.
The way things are going, we might even have the same teams come Rd15!! But we’re still a long way off Rd1. A lot can happen and it probably will. V happy with where I’m at right now tho’ 🙂

    2. Can’t fault it other than Mills for mine. Just can’t bring myself to selecting him this year. Doubt he really breaks into the swans midfield yet but worth a look in JLT. At his price id look at Witherden for a little extra (roughly 30k).

Also has there been any talk on Rozee and his potential role? If he plays wing or half back he seems a good option. Obviously pending other rookies who line up round 1.

Josh Kelly also seems to be a bit of a POD with people (included myself) selecting the likes of Fyfe and Oliver

      1

      0
      1. Cheers for the feedback Jack.

To be honest Miles could be a number of similarly priced defenders. Blakley, and Witherden ( and quite a few others) I have looked at, but always have doubts as to their roles.
I did hear Mills was training with the midfield and that was enough for me to chuck him in for now.

As for J Kelly. and Fyfe I rate them pretty much the same as far as durability and ceiling. I just find it easier to put he pressure on non Freo players. So kelly it is.:)

        1

        1. I know what you mean. It’s kind of ironic to call myself allsaints and yet never seem to pick one single starter.
I tried Savage last year and that was a sh1t move. Never again, I prefer to enjoy my SuperCoach without the added stress.

Talking of our own teams, could either Cerra or Andy Brayshaw breakout as early as season two? Brayshaw looked on his way before he copped a mouthful and I’m hearing great things about Cerra.
I only ask because the missus likes to put a team of potential breakouts together 😉

          1

          0
          1. I can’t see it happening this year.

Both Cerra and baby Brayshaw have talent to burn, but it might take another year in the gym before they can really mix it with the big boys in the middle.

The only guys in recent history I can remember breaking out in their second season, already had bigger bodies like Oliver ( your former love child)

I’m expecting them both to be A grade talent before too long, maybe not this year though.

I’m sure this will get brought up in the Freo Review and I think someone has mention him before this year. But my left field Freo player to keep an eye on is…..

            Steven Hill. $389 200.

Listed as a defender only and VERY awkwardly priced, even at a discount after missing almost half of last year. I’m pretty sure he will play the half back distributor role with Blakey maybe moving further up the ground this year.
There’s not a whole lot of experience left in Freo’s backline. Hill maybe the one tasked with that defensive general position. He still has pace and he’s a very good kick.
I’d have to check but I’m pretty sure he has averaged 90+ in past seasons playing mainly wing.

Just another one to throw in the melting pot that is the $350K / $450K underpriced defenders that “MAY” breakout.

            1

            0
  46. I’ve made some adjustments with Titch going down and I have to say I’m pretty happy with this version (V6, but who’s counting). Rookies will change but everyone knows that so here it is 🙂

DEF: Laird, Blakely, Williams, Logue, Wilkie, Hore (Koschitzke, Wigg)

MID: Cripps, Fyfe, Neale, Martin, Merrett, Miles, Constable, Valente (Hind, Bewley, Watson – loop)

    RUC: Grundy, Martin (Fort)

FWD: Dangerfield, Heeney, Wingard, Greene, Setterfield, Corbett (Cavarra, Burgess)

    $79,600 left in the bank.

Defence notes – Still tossing up between Blakely or Mills as well Logue or Williamson.

Midfield notes – Not sure if I like having Dusty in there with Merrett as well but not sure who I’d get in for him. Maybe someone like Bont/Yeo/Beams.

Forward notes – If Tobias isn’t fit I’ll slot in a fit J.Daniher or a rookie and possibly upgrade Wingard to Dev Smith or one of Logue/Williamson to another potential breakout such as Witherden/Newman if I can afford it.

Anyway, that’s my team, feel free to rip it apart.

  47. In light of no mitchell, and this site starting to heat up a lot, i’ve done away with the spit-balling and left field ideas to get the brain running and finally constructed a side that i like. The aim is to reach full premium asap.
    DEF-LLoyd, Laird, Whitherden(breakout), williams(value) 2 xrookies.
    MID-Macrae, Cripps, Kelly(out of fyfe, oliver, dusty, neale) Zerrett(value) 4 x rookies
RUC-Grundy, Gawn(to scared to not start them)
    FWD-Danger, Menegola(heeney pod), Mclean(whatever, about 5-6 to choose from), Wingard(value) 2 x rookies.

A 14 man squad structured at 4-4-2-4, with each player to finish in their top tier, def top 8, mids top 10 etc(yes, you too witherden)
Grabbed the best value player on each line that could be in the top bracket. Then chose the 2 top scorers in each line so i,m not missing them during the season. Filled with watch listed rookies.
Left over money went into kelly(least downside of the big guns), witherden(my breakout call for this year) and menegola (my heeney pod, he averaged 100, then the goat arrived and he averaged 100).
I have $0.00 in the bank but i’m fine with all my dollars increasing their value as opposed to sitting on 50-60 grand.
With a starting side of 14 keepers i should save trades to upgrade witherden later on if need be.
No point dropping players to get extra cash, I wont get enough to buy another premium mid, and i dont want another mid pricer, If SC changes prices, ill lower menegola to accommodate.

    1. Brave going Grundy and Gawn, but like you say, could and likely will pay massive dividends.

Personally I’d ditch Witherden and put Miles at M5 instead. Would give you better balance and likely more points and cash too.

      1

      0
      1. Sorry, but i can’t bring myself to run a mid pricer in the middle, fallen premo yeah, but not a mid pricer, it’s actually a personal rule i have due to past experiances. Maby andy mcgrath next year though…

        1

        0
        1. Tof.

          I don’t mean to be a pain but…..

Can you re post your team actually choosing the rookies?

You will actually need to find 4 defensive rookies,
          (2 on field / 2 bench)
          7 midfield rookies (4 on field / 3 bench).
          A ruck rookie and,
          4 forward rookies. ( 2 on field / 2 bench)

Thats 16 rookies from a total of $1 841 900. Or just over $115.000 per rookie.

And thats putting Zerrett in “for value.”

I would just like to know where your going to find all these cheap rookies. Do you know something we don’t?

          2

          0
          1. DEF, hore, wigg, mclennen, Wilkie.
MID, constable, bewley, Scott, west, o’halloran, hind, Atkins.
            RUC, sweet.
            FWD, woodcock, cavara, Parker, Wilkinson.
I’ve had all these guys plus more on my watch list, I try never to go over 123900 priced rookies, works so far.
Exception is if a rookie has a very high ownership. Also I’m happy to downgrade menegola if I need more rookie funds. But the ultimate plan is not which Keepers to start, but to have 14 of them, obviously dictated by available rookies.

            1

            1
  48. Theres an article on this site about up coming rookies, also afl.com did a piece about possible debuts this year, and other sources for 1 or 2 rookies here and there. Combine them all together, put them into price brackets, now just have to wait and see who gets a game. Then see if they are mature aged and ready, will they have job security etc.
I have marked down 7 defence, 14 mid and 11 fwd to keep a close eye on. Almost all at 123900 or under. Exceptions being stocker, setterfield, Hatley, and mchenry, lol also benell.

  49. I do like what your trying to achieve with a very strict G&R approach.

You seem to have, by far the strongest line up of starting Premo’s.

I’m just not sure if enough cheap rookies( with decent JS and scoring potential ) will be selected R1.
Remember you will be relying on the scores of at least 6 of these guys on field ( thats over a quarter of your side ) every week.

Also relying on base priced (123K, theses guys rarely average over 70 ppg) on field rookies to fill half your midfield spots ( where most of your points should come from) seems to me to be like a huge gamble.

I guess if you say drop Menegola all the way down to Setterfield.
this frees up $400k. Divided over the 16 rookies thats $25K more each. bringing your total rookie spend to $140k each.

I feel this would allow you to get in the more expensive rookies that should have much better scoring potential and JS, Like Collins or Williamson (back) , Walsh in the middle. and maybe Blakey forward.

I guess you will always have the option if all those cheap rookies don’t show up R1.
Even if they do I would be trying to get another midfielder in, as thats where all the big points are scored.

Just my take on it, others may have different ideas.

    1

    0
    1. But expensive rookies rarely ave much anyway. This is my ideal starting side. When first teams drop I’ll lock in the js rookies first, then add premiums while maintaining structure, might have to drop macrae to Neale, or Lloyd to Whitfield etc,
which is fine but only pending on rookies. It’s not the players, it’s the structure that’s important. The initial rookie selections will dictate which premiums make the cut.

      1

      0
      1. Yep I get all that.

I’m actually more commenting on the structure.

I just don’t know if I would be trusting half my midfield spots to Rookies. The midfield and the Ruck ( you have that covered) Are where the majority of your points are scored.

Maybe we get four awesome Mature aged midfield rookies that play every week and average 90+ ?

I’m not a stats man but I can’t remember that happening in my time playing SC.
I do know ,last year there was only one. Tim Kelly I can’t really see anyone this year even matching what he did joining the Cats midfield.

I’m really not trying to be negative, I just think spreading your rookies more evenly over mids defence and forwards is the most likely way of capturing the very best (and cheapest) rookies on each line.

Like I said, other people might have different ideas.

        1

        0
        1. I’ve always ran 5 deep sometimes 6 deep in the mids. I can’t provide the actual statements or the names , but a couple of the previous winners have said that learning not to go so deep in the middle made a Huge difference and was one of the main things that they learned.
Don’t quote me on this without me providing proof! But you can find it out there somewhere.

          1

          0
          1. For me ” not going deep in the middle” would mean

Having at least 5 premo 3 rookie onfield structure.

Personally if it wasn’t for Miles at M6, I would be probably looking at something similar with Walsh and 2 rookies on field R1.

I know you don’t like Miles, but for me his value lies in the fact if he doesn’t work out,( I still think he will ) he can be easily downgraded to a rookie that I’ve missed. I can then use that coin for any number of things. Maybe picking up a firing Daniher up forward, or a Roberton type if he’s killing it down back. Basically any other midpricer or Fallen Premo that might be firing.

What I’m trying to say is I have no problem with a
5 Premo 3 rookie midfield set up.

I just feel relying on 4 on field midfield rookies is a step to far.

I’m happy to be proven wrong if you can find any of those quotes?

  50. Hore will not play. Frost and McDonald as key defenders were solid last year, now with Lever coming back and the recruitment of May he will be lucky to start in his position in the 2’s. Good relative to other rookies but at the wrong club to get a game, or even close.

    1. Yeah cool.

I guess we all need to find as much value as possible with our starting Midfields thats why for me Z Merrett was one of my first picked.
I have also gone J kelly over Macrea as I rate them pretty much the same on durability and ceiling but Kelly is $70k cheaper. Every little bit helps.
I also think Dusty and M Crouch and maybe even Beams are all underpriced or value picks if their all playing mainly midfield.

Cripps and Neale are both priced on about their output. I think they deserve their place mainly based on the fact they played 22 games last year and are very unlikely to drop off in price much over the year.

Getting that balance right between value and proven reliability is the key in my book.

  51. DEF: L. Whitfield, C. Blakely, A. Witherden, Z. Williams, N. Newman, S. Collins (C. Wilkie, H. Wigg)

    MID: P. Cripps, N. Fyfe, J. Kelly, S. Ross, T. Taranto, A. Miles, C. Constable, B. Bewley (L. Valente, N. Hind, T. Atkins)

    RUC: B. Grundy, B. Longer (D. Fort)

    FWD: P. Dangerfield, I. Heeney, C. Wingard, W. Setterfield, C. Burgess, J. Corbett (L. Schultz, B. Cavarra)

    $83,700 ITB.

Pretty much set now. Only pre-season injuries and R1 rookie selections to alter the lineup (although I have chosen rookies for potential output and likelihood of starting – so shouldn’t really change). Any flaws here I have missed?

    1. Brave but positive pick to go with Seb Ross. IF Hanners is up and about early that should free him up a little more, to continue his 110+ ave. From the back half of last year.
The other thing on your side is that I won’t be starting him, as it always seems to put the mockers on my Sainters 😉
Looks great I reckon, especially your back and forward line spreads.
      Good luck 😉

      1. After Mitchell went down the obvious pick was Oliver/Macrae but both are OP IMO, so went with Ross who I thought might have lifted last year (didn’t so it’s good I didn’t pick him), but feel this is his year – he’s in the leadership group and talking like he’s hungry for success if he doesn’t break out this year it aint happening. Has a high ceiling posted 150+ 3 times last year its just consistency, which the Hannebery addition will help.

  52. Def: Laird, Blakely, Williams, Collins, Quaynor, Mckay (Hore, Wigg)

Mid: Fyfe, Cripps, Yeo, Martin, Merret, Miles, Stocker, Constable (Hind, Bewly, West)

    Ruck: Grundy, Kreuzer (loophole)

Fwd: Dangerfield, Heeney, Gray, Wingard, Setterfield, Parker (McAdam, Corbett)

At this stage Cripps, Martin, Merret, Grundy, Dangerfield and Heeney are the only players im 100% sure will be there come round 1 (barring injury)

Def thoughts: Im actually finding defence the hardest to select as i want so many players. Really interested in Witherden (feel like this is his real breakout year along with the new kick ins bonus). Im even considering going all below 500k in defence with all value of Witherden, Blakely and Williams although fear this may be a disadvantage long term. Whitfield and Sicily the other considerations.

Mid thoughts: Pretty set on my mids. Hoping Yeo will be a pod and will be able to replicate the likes of Macrae and Zorko after being placed as mid only and ignored by the majority. Said i would go without Fyfe due to injury risk but can you really ignore him if he has a full pre season?

Ruck thoughts: Grundy locked however Kruezer is a massive risk that im still unsure if i’m willing to take (especially without coverage). Could either hope someone like Clarke or Fort plays for backup or potentially downgrade a Wingard or Gray to afford Goldy.

Fwd thoughts: Danger and Heeney locked since day 1. Then Gray and Wingard selections come down to whether or not it looks like they will play mid. If they both do i find it hard not to lock them both in for 100+ averages.

Clearly all rookies are placeholders and can be re shuffled upon round 1 selections

    1. Looks great from here. Like your confidence in Fyfe (he knows he needs to be right with Neale gone) and says he’s preparing himself to ensure he’s up for 22+ games in 2019. Tick.
Love Yeo as a pod too and he’s coming more and more into my calculations. 110+ tick.

I too am struggling with DEFs, especially with the recent Champion Data announcement. Am now thinking I’ll start Sicily, Whitfield, Williams and Roberton (if fit).

As was mentioned last night, I think we’re gonna need a thread on the new CD kick-in rulings.

Rookies in Rd1 is gonna dictate how deep I go on my DEF line, because if I go three I want them ALL to be locks, or a min. two locks and a decent pts/money-maker (eg Williams). Roberton simply has to start if fit for mine.

Kreuzer is a no-no for me. He’s on the downward slope of his SC bell-curve. No question. I’d either find the money to go up to a Goldy/Witts (both Rd14) making sure you have enough to trade for Gawn (or other premo) on that bye; Goldy might even save you a trade! Or (more risk/reward) go down to Longer for cash to strengthen elsewhere.

Just my thoughts, but think your MIDs and FWDs look real good.

      1. Cheers allsaints fully agree with what you say regarding Kreuzer. Thinking Robbie Gray is the one that will have to be sacrificed (potentially to Greene IF fit) in order to upgrade Kreuzer.

Not sure i have it in me to go for Longer but ill certainly have a look at him during JLT.
