Injury List (early Feb)

Written by Schwarzwalder on February 12 2016

You need to know who’s in doubt for Rd1?  Here it is, Supercoaches!! A tidy summary of injury updates from the various club websites. In most cases the injury lists are longer. However I’ve limited this list to players that may miss the start of the season (that’s most important for Supercoach). That means there are more injuries, but those players are expected to be fit for Rd1 (and even play during the NAB Challenge). If you feel I’ve missed someone, send me your source in the comments section and I’ll happily update the List.  Should be an updated version of this list after the first round of NAB games anyway.

Ricky Henderson – had surgery on a bulged disc (back) in December. On a modified program and in doubt for Rd1.

Andy Otten – Knee injury flared up again in November requiring a ‘clean-out’. Crows are being very careful with his program. In doubt for Rd1.

Josh Green – had surgery on his fractured foot just three weeks ago. In doubt for Rd1.

Darcy Gardiner – Had operations on shoulder and ankle over the pre-season. Is on a modified running program and may struggle to be ready for Rd1.

Lachie Plowman – Hip complaint. Expected to be fit for Rd1.

Levi Casboult – Knee injury. Expected to be fit for Rd1.

Adam Treloar – Groin/Ostieitis Pubis. On a modified program, slowly joining in with the main group. Optimistically looking at Rd1.

Jeremy Howe – broke his finger, apparently playing Frisbee with his dog. The Frisbee and dog were taken in for questioning 😉 Also having trouble with foot soreness. Rd3/4 looks more realistic for him.

Matt Scharenberg – recovering from 2nd knee reconstruction. Expected to miss most, if not all, of 2016.

Tyson Goldsack – Knee tendinopathy, had surgery at the end of last year, still recovering on modified program. Expected back after Rd4.

Matthew Leuenberger – ongoing Achilles issues, modified program over pre-season. Will resume running next week. You’d have to think he’s doubtful for Rd1.

Nick Kommer – Knee, modified program. Touch and go for Rd1.

Harley Bennell – ongoing calf issues. Has long been in the Rehab Group on a modified program. The Club is adamant that Bennell will join in full training shortly. Club is still optimistic about a Rd1 start.

Nat Fyfe – left the Rehab Group after his broken leg. Training with main group since early Feb. Barring any mishaps, he should be there Rd1.

Michael Johnson – calf problems. Joined the Rehab group in late Jan and will be hard to get up for Rd1.

Anthony Morabito – left hamstring tear on 9th Feb. Will be recovering for at least 4-6 weeks in Rehab Group. Put a line through him for Rd1.

Harley Balic – Wrist, expected back after Rd3

Alex Pearce – Leg, expected back after Rd2

Joel Selwood – Taken longer to recover from foot injury (plantar fasciitis) last season than first thought. Still on modified program. Has said himself that Rd1 is doubtful.

Scott Selwood – his chronic ankle problems have him behind the 8-ball for Rd1. Rd2 or 3 more likely.

Billie Smedts – had surgery on his shoulder, won’t be ready till after Rd6.

Cameron Delaney – Had knee surgery and has only just begun running, expected back after Rd4.

Gold Coast
Jarrad Grant – fractured a bone in his wrist during a bike session at the Club. May still play the last game of NAB Challenge.

David Swallow – knee, slowly joining in with the main group. Has given himself every chance to play Rd1.

Jaeger O’Meara – patella tendon / knee. Still on a modified program but edging closer to a Rd1 start. However in an interview this week, JOM did state “may take an extra month or two to get it right in the long run”. Keep an eye on the injury updates before locking him in.

Paul Ahern – Injured his knee at training this week (ACL). Has been ruled out for the year.

Nick Haynes – groin problem, expected back after Rd2.

Jaryd Roughead – having knee surgery this week to repair his posterior cruciate ligament, expected to miss up to five months.

Matt Spangher – Calf strain. Will resume skills work shortly. Still doubtful for Rd1.

Alex Woodward – underwent third knee reconstruction last July. Earliest return would be around the byes.

Heritier Lumumba – Progressing well after surgery on both ankles. Return date still uncertain however.

Ben Newton – has returned to the main group after ankle surgery. Rd1 might come too soon for him.

Chris Dawes – ongoing calf/soft tissue troubles, re-injured during the week. Still on modified program, won’t line up for Rd1.

Jack Trengove – still recovering from chronic foot injury, started running in Jan after long lay-off. The club is very cautious with him given his record. Rd1 start unlikely.

Christian Petracca – rejoined the main group after breaking his toe in early Jan.  Club still optimistic that he’ll line up for Rd1.  Watch this space!

North Melbourne
* No major worries at Arden St. Kangaroos are in great shape heading into the season.

Port Adelaide
Charlie Dixon – Knee injury at training in early Feb, surgery needed to fix meniscus. Out for at least 4-6 weeks. Club is hopeful that he’ll be ready for Rd1 but there’s gotta be a big question mark on that.

Jared Polec – coming back from serious foot (navicular) injury, has recovered well. Expected to get some game time in NAB Challenge.

Chris Yarran – struggling to shake his calf problems. Still on modified program and is now doubtful for Rd1 against his old club Carlton.

Nathan Drummond – coming back from knee reconstruction, should be ready after Rd2/3.

Ben Lennon – glandular fever. Worst is now behind him, should see some game time in NAB Challenge.

Nathan Freeman – the chronic hamstring problems just won’t go away. Ruled out of the NAB Challenge already, still on modified program. Only if he ever gets “on the bubble” should you consider bringing him in.

Jack Billings – appears to be over his shin issues. Still being managed but expected to see some game time in NAB Challenge.

Lance Franklin – by all reports is having a great pre-season, on track for Rd1.

Jarrad McVeigh – off-season knee surgery, recently joined in the main group. Club is still optimistic about him lining up for Rd1.

Ben McGlynn – being managed through hamstring issues, but should see game time in NAB Challenge.

Zak Jones – had off-season surgery on his knee, yet to join the main group. Expected to be ready after Rd2.

Alex Johnson – fourth knee reconstruction was a failure and he is seeking advice from specialists. Luck has abandoned this guy!

West Coast
Nic Naitanui – modified program due to back problems, officially in better shape than last year however. Expected to play Rd1.

Western Bulldogs
Clay Smith – returning from third knee reconstruction. At the very earliest he’ll be back after Rd8.

  1. So many questions over a lot of popular picks. I would’ve strongly considered all of Treloar, Leuenberger, Bennel, Fyfe, Selwood, JOM, McVeigh and NicNat. Now I’m reluctant to pick any of them.

  2. News coming through today of a knee injury to Charlie Cameron (Adel). He’ll miss a month of training but should still be available for Rd1 according to the Crows.

Chris Yarran and Brett Deledio sat out the Tigers’ intra-club match today, staying on the exercise bikes instead. Deledio is yet to be named on any injury list. At an estimated guess, he’s on a modified program but should see some game time during NAB Challenge.
