Lynch will train with the main group on Wednesday and is a chance of returning for Saturday night’s clash with Melbourne in Darwin. He has missed the past two games with viral meningitis. Scans on Monday confirmed the bad news that Cripps’ season is over. The star midfielder suffered a fractured fibula after attempting to smother a kick from Melbourne defender Jayden Hunt during the second quarter last Sunday. Later in that term White was injured in a marking contest when teammate Levi Casboult fell across his left knee and scans on Monday revealed a minor medial ligament strain. In better news, Silvagni may be available to return. – Howard Kotton

Rising star Phillips missed the Essendon clash with illness, while Wells is edging towards a return from his latest calf injury. Ambrose hasn’t played for the Bombers since their Anzac Day win over Collingwood, but is back in training and expected to be back playing in the next two weeks as he nears the end of his quad injury rehabilitation. Fellow defender Brown remains eight weeks away with a return this season looking unlikely, while the Bombers will continue to monitor McNiece’s neck strain. They are uncertain when he will be play next. Defender Michael Hartley suffered a corked thigh last week but is expected to be available for Friday night’s clash with St Kilda. – Callum Twomey

Greene, Johnson and Williams will hit the track on Wednesday at Spotless Stadium in a bid to prove their fitness for the Sydney derby, with Williams the most advanced of the trio. Coach Leon Cameron told the media on Monday that if they don’t get through training they wouldn’t be picked for Saturday night’s massive clash. The Hawks have yet to lodge their injury report this week so these are estimates only, but the hope is that Paul Puopolo will play this week after missing two weeks with a groin strain. The extent of Grant Birchall’s knee injury has yet to be confirmed; if it is minor he will play in the near future, but as was the case with Ben Stratton, he may be rested for the remainder of the season if it doesn’t settle down soon. Josh Gibson said on the weekend he hopes to resume playing in a couple of weeks. Jaeger O’Meara travelled with the team to Launceston on the weekend and the Hawks are still keen to have him play a few games before the end of the season. – Ashley Browne

Key members Waite, Wood and Williams could return against Port Adelaide on Saturday. Waite’s recovery is astounding, given he was considered as much as a month away only last week. Preuss will also face a fitness test as he bids to earn an AFL recall, while Jacobs underwent minor surgery on Monday. Hansen, Wright, Larkey and Watson sat out Werribee’s VFL match last week, but all could be back this weekend. That is particularly good news for Wright, who has had several setbacks in 2017. – Marc McGowan
