Is Don. Is Done.

Written by MJ on January 12 2016

Thommo has broken the news coming from the Bombers inner sanctum over in the coaches box this morning. The 12 players who remain at Essendon and 5 others who have moved to other clubs since, will be handed 12 month bans and thus ruled ineligible to play the 2016 AFL season. There will surely be more news to come, and I’m sure you’ll all want to have your take on it throughout the day.

What are your initial thoughts and possible SC implications of the decision?

  1. I’m no legal expert, but as far as I can tell there is no viable further avenue of appeal – this is the final verdict.
The next logical step seems to be that the players involved will band together and take a class action against the club. I’m not sure what that will mean for the Essendon FC in the long run.

  2. To be honest I thought they would be found not guilty. The players have suffered enough and the ban is harsh. This may push Jobe into retirement. Let’s hope his Brownlow isn’t taken away.

  3. What a shit day in footy. I’m not a Dons fan but I don’t want to see this happen to any club.

Are the banned players still able to play in their VFL team?

  5. what are our thoughts on cooney? he’ll be one of the more senior players there this year. Any chance for a return to his old form? or am I just being a bit too optimistic.

  6. How can the court say what they took was illegal when no evidence shows what the players took ?
The question in court should have been for each player , 1 at a time :
Is there any evidence ( ie ) Heppell took an illegal substance and if so show me the evidence …!
The evidence isnt there . The unusual procedure is that Essendon did was wrong . The players asked evidence for the procedure/s to be shown to be legal , of which they were by document ( which turned out to be wrong , the players were lied to ) and the players were not aware it to be wrong. The players then signed a consent form and now after all thias time the players are said to be taking something illegal yet the courts dont know what it was as NOTHING was detected in any players samples.
This final decision doesnt go too well for anyone and or club coming under the WADA and CASA code and so on .
Basically if they think you have done something wrong with no real evidence you can be suspended with no appeal. The evidence should not be supposition etc …thats so unusual the decision handed down today .
Look out all clubs / players male and female young and old.

    Essendon team without topups etc

    J Merrett Zaharakis Gleeson
    ZMerrett Daniher Ambrose

Parish Kommer Edwards Fantasia Francis Langford Mckenna

  7. Besides Luey, they still have McKernan (196), Daniher (201), Hartley (199), Mitch Brown (196) and whoever they get as topup players.

I’m not seeing Nyoun getting an opportunity, but the preseason will reveal all.

  8. Wow, I so did not see this coming.

This season will be unlike any season before or after. This is going to be the single biggest factor in the game this year. Not that I know how exactly, but correctly dealing with this will probably make (or break) our seasons.

It is possible the right moves will be so obvious that everyone playing seriously makes them…..which still screws up the flow and structure of the season.

I think I will be moving the Bombers down some when calculating fixture strength this season.

  10. Happy to finally see Essendon get their just deserts. A strong message needed to be sent to ensure other clubs don’t decide to go all East German on their playing lists in the future. Pity it didn’t happen earlier. Pity Essendon didn’t acknowledge, accept and cooperate fully with the investigators. In my view, that behaviour is as culpable as their doping program.

  11. Even though I’ll be looking at some of the names already mentioned, I’m thinking that Essendon will be best avoided at this point in time. We’ll all learn more during the preseason games I think. Gaz as a round 1 captain looks a certainty.

  12. Now they have handed down their verdict Watson as found guilty by WADA of taking an illicit substance will have to loose his Brownlow otherwise the whole finding is a farce. You get stripped of your gold medal if found guilty, lance lost his tour winnings and Jobe will loose his brownlow. Mitch and Cotch should share the spoils.

  13. Wow, I can’t belive they actually got banned. Honestly I just feel sorry for the players. If this was going to be the outcome do it from day 1, not now, that’s just a joke. Hird should be banned for life, sued for every penny his got, and stripped from every record at Essendon. This is huge for Essendon, it could end the club. If players sue, it could bankrupt them. And what about the current players contracts? What’s to stop say Heppell from saying stuff you you have breach my contract by giving me an illegal substance I’m leaving. Terrible day and result for the players, all clubs involved and the sport in general.

Gotta say but lol at Carlisle. Sorry Saint supporters but your club got shafted in that deal.

  14. The Hero from the Harbour is bang on I think. James Hird’s ego and arrogance has surely contributed to this shit fight being dragged out as long as it has. He was a very good footy player but he sure hasn’t done Essendon any favours since he stopped playing. No doubt he thought he was untouchable when all this shook out?

  15. As most of you know I am a a passionate Bomber supporter and I love my club through the good times and also the bad. If I see any comments directed at my club that I think are uncalled for I will stick up for my club. Doesn’t matter whether you think I’m wrong. That’s what passionate supporters do they fight back at any critism of there club.
Now I got that out of the way I just wanna say I agree with some of you and don’t agree with some. There’s a a lot of Hird bashing on here that just makes me shake my head at some of you. Although I believe some of the blame has to go on him not all the blame should be. What about Mr Dank and Dean Robinson . Hird didn’t bring them to the club Bomber Thompson did. So what happened at the club in my opinion wasnt 1 individual. I’ve also noticed a comment saying justice has been done I’d like to know how justice has been done when the previous verdict was not guilty and this verdict was guilty but they had no new evidence. This guilty verdict was based on assumptions and nothing else. the only way I thought they would be found guilty was if there was any new evidence. I was wrong. No new evidence and still guilty. Go figure….i agree the club and officials had to pay the price but not the players.
Long season for Bomber supporters but there are a couple of positives

  16. Love your passion Dazz!!

However , trying to defend Hird is trying to defend the indefensiable.

Hird let the players down. The players trusted Hird and the management. It is a bit like work just do what the boss says.
Hird is and was a disgrace how he he carried himself through the whole sorry saga. Hird is that vain he was getting injected with some weight loss injection from what I understand.
I feel sorry for the players who were victims of their own naivety in believing the club would and was doing the right thing by them.

An early plea would have saved the players from 4 years of hell.
Evans and Paul Little also have a lot to answer for. Dr. Reid should go as he stood by and knew what was going on let it go on.

My advice is Dazz look at your clubs role in this saga more critically.
