Match Comments (By Armchair Critic)

I think I am going to break my rule of not picking second year players because Callum Mills is an absolute jet. I am having problems with picking DEF premos this year so Mills looks like the perfect solution. Hard to get a lot out of this game due to the conditions, but Toby Greene has seriously put his hand up. Best and fairest, AA and at 23 is still improving. Darcy Cameron is firming as a fwd bench option. Unfortunately Nic Newman didn’t play so I am no longer confident about his prospects. Melican, Foote and Fox did some nice things but they are fringe I think. Taranto is very very good. I think he could play 8-15 games this year. Not worth his price tag in SC unfortunately. Buddy looks fit. Heater continues to rack up disposals and JPK will be a solid option for top 8 again this year.

Match Comments (By Brad)

Just finished watching the game. Somethings I noticed:

– Hampton gave away a lot of frees and even a 50 which would have nose-dived is eventual score of 66.
– Jacobs had a huge 3rd qtr, winning contested marks and shots at goal, but still only ended up with an 86.
– Andy Otten was solid, may get a few games this year lining up on the 3rd tall forward.
– Laird looked like he was only going half pace.
– Gore would be an unlikely starter for round 1.
– Wigg was disappointing after last week.
– Harry Deer could be a surprise.

– Tuohy was very solid and looks confident when the ball is in hand. Drifted down for a goal too. You can give me all the Harry O comparisons in the world, but I think he’ll go well all year. However, the ball spent a lot of time in Geelong’s half-back line, as evidenced by Henderson, Lonergan, Ruggles and Thurlow scoring above average for the game.
– Zach Guthrie shows a lot of composure, years above his 14 year old looks.
– Cockatoo lined up in the middle a few times and one a few clearances. Something I’d like to see more, but still searching for a 4-quarter effort.
– Danger played half a game, yet to get serious. Wasn’t in the middle much either.
– Selwood shouldered a lot of the grunt work, but was blowing out the cobwebs mostly.
– Parfitt looks clean with the ball and will be in with a chance for round 1. Cut through the middle and is growing in confidence.
– Tom Stewart, mature age recruit and already knows the Geelong system. Another solid game.
– Black was pretty ordinary. He’s not a target forward, not a crumber, not a midfielder. That leaves left-back…

From Mt Gambier so saw this game live so decided to give a game report for SC relevant players.
RICHMOND
Nankervis, Huge watch, if 1st choice ruckman at rd1 is a real POD
Martin / Cotchin, excellent and only played 1/2 game
Miles, breakout chance
Caddy, relevant but not for me

POWER
Wines, Boak, ok
Rookies ,Sam PP, Atley & Eddy a looking good for Rd1
Wingard, not much MID time & finished with a corky
Pittard, Hammy
R. Gray , not fit
Ryder, well beaten by Nankervis

Would have liked to give a more in depth report but had run out of RECORDS at the gate and wasnt sure of the players numbers

Summary, doubt if I saw any final 8 finalists play but is was great to have 2 AFL teams play here, huge crowd [9500]. Good luck to everybody this SC season.

  1. As much as the 3rd man rule will help our Rucks scores in Supercoach i think it needs to be refined.
In the Crows vs Cats game there was a shallow Boundary throw in and it hit Dean Gore in the back who was manning up Selwood. Beggers belief , but a free kick was given against him.

From what i also understand if there is a shallow throw in or one that goes over the Ruckmens heads then players have to wait for it to bounce before they can gather it or a Free kick is awarded against them. If you are going to change rules at least make sure they are in keeping with the spirit of the game IMO.

    1. Saw it mentioned that the rule states that its a free kick against if a 3rd player contests the ruck – hopefully they can just refine the interpretation rather than the rule in this case. You’d think most umpires wouldn’t pay that as a free kick since he clearly didn’t contest the ruck.

  2. Taranto is ‘very very good’, picks up 97 SC points at only 75% TOG and 57% DE, yet is ‘not worth his price tag’?

    What am I missing?

    1. Job Security. There’s no certainty he slots into GWS’s best 22 midfield. Anyone elses, sure. Theirs? Tough ask. Deledio missing does open up his chances though. Looks comfortable across the half forward line.

          1. Ha it was mentioned but I’ve heard/read the Luke Parker and Bartel comparisons before – he’s got a strong overhead mark.

  4. Predraft there was was talk about Taranto sliding g to eagles pick. I was fuming, didn’t rate him at all. I’ll eat my humble pie. I WISH he slid to us. Kid I’d a GUN and very much tempting me to pick him.

    1. If he was playing for any other team I’d lock him in for sure, but the depth of the Giants is just insane, there’s no real job security there for him unfortunately.

    1. Wow! Very, very, VERY risky picks if you do end up picking those two to start the year, but if it does pay off you’ll look like the smartest man on the site 😉
