Judd v Boyd

Written by Motts on February 1 2012

2 captains that played every game last year, averaged the same amount and led by example. Neither of them are afraid to go in and get the pill when they have to.

Who do you take first?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. Both gonna average same as last year and get roughly the same scores each week as each other. Just annoying with Boyd who gets 50 possesions for like 100 points. Gotta hate that poor kick:handball ratio like Priddis.

  2. Boyd for a pod … had him last year and was very happy with him although Jimbo’s point is very true about him and Priddis. Had them both and they both handball far too much!!

  3. I love both of these players, but in the analysis, it is a pretty easy pick for me.

Boyd hits the big ’30’ towards the end of this season, while Judd is a year younger. With the way that they do go at the footy, we are getting towards the time when they risk injuries to ageing bodies and a general slowing down that comes with years.

In terms of durability, Boyd wins in a canter. He has only missed two games in six seasons, while Judd has missed 11. This is the category that Boyd wins, but overall, three main differences stand out for me.

Firstly, across the last season, Boyd outscored Judd by a solitary point, in his best SuperCoach season ever. If you look at more than just last year, Boyd’s previous best season average was 106.3, while Judd has had previous season averages of 106.3, 109.9, 110.9, 114.4, 118.4 and 131.7, telling you what we already know: Judd has been an elite SuperCoach performer for a long time!

Secondly, the difference in their DreamTeam averages. Last season, Boyd averaged 116 to Judd’s 102.4, showing that he needs far more of the ball to have a SuperCoach impact. As I have said before, I am always partial to the man who doesn’t have to get as much of it to score well.

Finally, the all-important ‘scoring ceiling’. Boyd has scored over 150 only five times in his career (interestingly, three of those have come against Fremantle, and four of them in 2011), while Judd has done it an astounding 23 times! This includes 11 over 164 (Boyd’s highest ever score) and the 2006 demolition of Brisbane that netted an epic 232 points.

Overall, while Boyd is a fantastic captain and always one of my first picked in DreamTeam, Judd has to be the option here. He is younger, has a better history, is only mildly less durable, but has the potential to be the captain that wins you a cool thousand bucks.

  4. Chris Judd for his ‘clutch’ factor. With the way Supercoach is weighted towards pivotal moments in a match, a man who can change or win a match off his own boot is extremely valuable. That’s why Judd and Goodes have been Supercoach gods for the better part of a decade.

  5. Judas is a champion, Damn u why did u leave us!! Come back but Kennedy is staying.
Great Analysis Don but this year I think its time for Murphy and Griffin to take the elite mantle from the captains, so I’m not taking other for the first time.
or am I? Decisions decisions!!! Arghhhh

  6. Judd for me although his post-baby form last year concerns me.

To be honest neither will be in my team round one. I prefer Murphy. For value I like Joelwood and I am even considering Hodgy for an under-priced ultra premium smokie.
